DADT Repeal Parties Sept. 20 For Gay And Lesbian Troops

WASHINGTON -- The military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy will become history on Sept. 20, but for active-duty gays and lesbians planning to celebrate its demise, there are still plenty of do's and don'ts to keep in mind.

In a blog post Monday, the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) released guidelines on the types of parties gays in uniform may attend under Pentagon policy. SLDN and other gay rights and political groups plan to hold celebrations in locations across the country to signal the end of the 17-year-old policy that bans open service in the military by gays and lesbians.

"Service members must remember that it is important to continue to obey the other rules and regulations that govern their conduct," wrote David McKean, SLDN's legal director. "Many service members want to attend these celebrations, and some might want to speak at them. The extent and type of participation will depend on the nature of the event as defined under military rules."

McKean spelled out the varying kinds of celebrations and whether they adhered to Defense Department rules on political activity:

We expect that most of the DADT repeal celebrations will be just that -- celebrations of the repeal of a bad law. No special rules apply to attendance at or participation in such events.

Service members, including those on active duty, should be able to attend these events as a spectator-celebrant and also to participate in them. They may wear their uniforms and speak as individuals about the importance of repeal to them personally and to the services generally. They may say that they are happy and proud that they now do not have to hide their sexual orientation, etc. They should not, of course, criticize their commanders (or past commanders) or elected officials or urge the election or defeat of candidates for office.

Because of their programs, however, other events might be considered non-partisan political events -- events relating to issues not identified with a political party. Such an event could be one that included, for example, speeches advocating LGBT equality and solicitation of contributions to LGBT rights groups.

A service member, including one on active duty, may attend such an event as a spectator and may participate in it, but may not wear the uniform and may not do anything to suggest official sponsorship or endorsement.

A third type of event is the partisan political event -- one relating to candidates representing political parties. We would not expect any of the DADT repeal celebrations to fall into this category. A service member on active duty may attend such an event as a spectator if not in uniform, but may not speak at or otherwise participate in it. A member not on active duty may participate, but only in a way that does not give rise to the inference or appearance of official sponsorship or endorsement.

Finally, an active duty service member may not engage in fundraising for an LGBT equality cause or any other political cause at the DADT celebration if it is held on a military base or reservation.

#YWatchers #GOPdebate said a mouthful of DEAFENING SILENCE As GOP Rivals Silent As Crowd Boos Gay Soldier Serving in Iraq. Seriously, I am responding to this articles on Parties related to the repeal of #DADT because the chilling effect of Wednesday night (09/22/2011)"s #GOPdebate lead me to conclude that there is no guaranty that we can protect #lgbt service members at this time. The final nail in the #Clinton era #DADT policy coffin is about to be nailed in by Log Cabin Republicans v. United States of America #LCRvUSA. This will only occur if #LCR successfully fends off an appeal by #POTUS. #LCR is fighting to have #DADT declared unconstitutional under the United States Constitution. While #POTUS and by the deafening silence of the GOP presidential hopefuls last night Santorum and the GOP bunch apparently (and I would like to use words of "certainty" here) support the concept that #DADT is constitutional. While #POTUS repealed #DADT, he did not say it was unconstitutional. Last night the #GOPdebate proved why #LCRvUSA must be ruled on as unconstitutional by the Court. Without it, #DADT can be reinstated with the brush of a pen stroke.

America's Politically-Correct Gay Military

. . . All that aside, and it shouldn’t be put too far aside in view of the unremitting campaign by gays, lesbians, bi-sexuals, and trans-sexuals to convince America of their normality, it’s a whole new day for the armed forces of the United States of America! Gays are usually focused on children but this new day celebrates adults.

After extensive studies and a manipulated survey of the troops, despite vehement objections and compelling evidence contradicting the survey’s validity, as of September 20th, 2011 homosexuals will be permitted to openly serve in the Army, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard.

As Army Lieutenant Colonel Robert Maginnes (Ret.) pointed out, the “consequences could be significant, but the American public has no clue because because the 111th Democrat-controlled Congress repealed the ban [on gays in our military] in a “lame-duck” session without hearing a single dissenting view.”

That ban, that law, 10 U.S.C. § 654, aka the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, in place for 18 years ever since Bill Clinton followed the advice of Dick Morris and pushed for its passage in 1993 in order to appear a moderate on the issue, had grated on the homosexual community for almost two decades.

With Republicans slated to take control of the House of Representatives in 2011, gays knew it was time to call in all their Democrat chits , . . .

DADT is done and it will never come back. Never again will there be 60 senators to make a fillibuster-proof bill.

On September 20th, we'll finally enter the 21st century with good company (aka: dozens of democratic nation in the world that has accepted gays into the military)... such as Canada, much of South America, Europe, Russia, Australia, and South Africa. Right now, we're in the same boat as China, the Middle East, and most of Africa. Great company we have right now, aye?

Let's not forget transgendered individuals are still not allowed to serve. Equal rights for EVERYONE.

Obama's Military Comes Out

Since Obama dumped "Don't Ask, Don't Tell",
The Marines have been going through hell
Because imagine what comes to mind
When you hear "We don't leave our Marines behind"
And "looking for a few good men" now rings a different bell!

Yet the Navy didn't have the same kind of trouble.
They made their changes "Aye, Aye, on the double"!
The song "Anchors Away"
Got changed to "Y.M.C.A.",
And the Lava soap has been replaced with "Mr. Bubble"!

The Army want to avoid this slippery slope.
Daily runs have been replaced with skipping rope.
For the troops to be effectual
They must become more metrosexual
And new recruits have to be issued soap on a rope!

Now for some troops, all these changes will be scary
But there's some truths that even grave diggers can't bury
Very soon a candidate will flout
His flaming desire to come out
After he wins election and gets sworn in as President Perry!

Did you know George Washington appointed a gay man in Valley Forge to organize the disorganized Continental Army? In fact this man, Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, was accredited with teaching the first American army military drills, discipline, and tactics.

Servicemembers should make t-shirts emblazoned with their branch of service (Army, Navy, Marine), # of years in service, combat involvement/years, and rank.

Leave the uniforms at home -- that will be the biggest point of contention. Non-gay servicemembers have gotten in trouble for appearing in uniform at questionable events, or for unbecoming conduct while in uniform.

This is a GIANT step, don't stumble over a small obstacle.

Visit ultra-conservative Colorado Springs and the bars are PACKED with G.I.s
Don't expect the NCO clubs on bases to be "gay bars" anytime soon, but I would like to see Disco Night and Drag Queen Bingo!

I think that too,but the sad fact of the matter is when you mix gay soldiers with straight one's there's going to be trouble. You do know that some homophobes have a tendancey to beat gays up? In civlian life there are gay bars that most gays preffer to go to,they should have that choice on base too.

DADT NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN LAW TO BEGIN WITH....gays should be allowed to serve their country just like everyone else.....GAYS SHOULD HAVE ALL THE SAME RIGHTS AS EVERYONE ELSE.

With all the celebrating and the significance for the Gay community, we have Tea Party candidates all running they will repeal this law. Being gay and having served before DADT was even a thought to see it finally be eliminated is great news. Unfortunately, Bachmann, Perry, Romney, Paul, and the rest of the idiots plan on repealing. Hopefully, the gay community will remember who's on our side, it's not the GOP and certainly not the Tea Party.

God, what's the point of defending our rights if everyone who choses to loses so many of their own? Guidelines for civil rights celebrations? Inability to even critique former political leaders? That's pathetic.
01:41 AM on 09/13/2011
Uh that's military norm. Service members are not allowed to make disparaging public remarks in uniform about their leadership under any circumstances gay or not gay.

Yes, thanks for the blindingly obvious insight. Re-read the post. At no point did I ask what the military norm was.

If we are to expect our soldiers to fight against tyranny, then they must be freed from tyranny from those they are fighting on behalf of.

This shouldn't require celebration, because it never should have been permitted in the first place. We should all be thankful that the rights of any minority are protected, lest we find ourselves similarly oppressed.
