Giant Red Crabs Take Over 'Antarctic Abyss,' Climate Change Blamed (VIDEO)

Giant animals colonizing the "Antarctic abyss" may sound like a plot out of a blockbuster horror movie. But scientists say this phenomenon is now actually happening. According to a report published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, large crabs stretching almost a meter wide have invaded the edge of the Antarctic, destroying ecosystems that took millions of years to build.

The King Crabs have colonized the "Antarctic abyss" of Palmer Deep, a basin more than 4,300 feet down, off the Antarctic Peninsula, reports the New Scientist.

Led by researchers at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, the findings are shown in a video filmed at the bottom of the ocean.

Treehugger notes that the rise in temperature is mainly to blame, given it was previously too cold for the crabs to live. In short, the researchers conclude the King Crab colonization of the Antarctic is linked to climate change.

According to the Independent, scientists say the number of species in areas colonized by the crabs is a quarter of that in areas that have escaped the invasion.

The invasion of the long-legged critters doesn't come as a surprise to scientists, given three years ago they predicted the King Crabs would invade within 100 years.

Last month, a study published in the journal Science showed that climate change is driving animals to the poles in search of their more normal natural habitats. The Guardian called it "one of the clearest examples of climate change in action." In fact, the leader of the research, Chris Thomas, professor of conservation biology, told The Guardian that for the past 40 years, animals and plants have been "shifting 20 cm per hour, for every hour of the day, for every day of the year."

This is not unlike the invasion of the Bark Beetle that is destroying huge swaths of forests around the world, including the U.S.

The beetle's habitat is expanding farther (and into higher territory) than ever before as warmer temps have substantially lengthened their breeding cycle (which used to be shortened by colder temps). THIS (along with severe drought) is attributed to the frequency and severity of the forest fires we are seeing in the mid-west (DEAD trees = fire kindling!). It has also been linked to more frequent bear attacks on humans as they are LOSING a major source of food (pine seeds) due to the beetle infestation. YES, it's all connected... and for every change (or loss) to our environment there ARE consequences!

But don't try telling ANY of this to the "deniers". Apparently, while signs of climate change have increased around the world, a concurrent DECREASE in "grey matter" prevents these neanderthals from seeing, learning or CARING about anything beyond their own back yards. Speaking of... how's that "heat" feeling Texas?

I guess Rick Perry just didn't "pray" hard enough!

Maybe climate change is causing a decrease in intelligence.

The metric system was never my thing- let me see if i understand this correctly a crab stretching 1 meter is equal to the height of kid/toddler?
Let me pull up my screenwriting software. Here's one for the Sy Fy Channel- Mega Crabs staring Tiffany and Dean Cain. Tiffany plays a marine biologist and Cain a sheriff is a small Florida town- they try to stop the giant crabs from eating half naked kids on the spring break..

Crabs are the cleanup crew of the ocean, much like vultures are on land. Leave them alone, and stick to working on a solution to climate change.

Vote the science denying teabaggers out of congress......

Republicans won't believe in climate change because it is forever linked to the dreaded AL GORE! NOOOOO! They will be sitting in the water with crabs on their heads, water rising up to their noses and still will not believe anything bad is happening. Isn't it time we put these old Dinosaurs out to pasture? They ruin our world and we continue to let them! Flucking ignorant stupid backward jerks ruining our world! And we just sit on our hands and cover our mouths to not insult the INCREDIBLY STUPID!
