SAN FRANCISCO -- Bowing to pressure from the Bay Area's Jewish community, Oakland's Museum of Children's Art has decided to cancel its planned exhibition of drawings by Palestinian children documenting their experiences during the 2008-2009 Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip.

Organized by the Middle East Children's Alliance, "A Child's View of Gaza" was supposed to run from September 24th through mid-November; however, the public reaction against displaying the pictures convinced the museum's board of directors to halt its plan.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports:

It had become a distraction to the main objective of bringing arts education to all children, said museum board member Randolph Bell.

"We were getting calls from constituents that were concerned about the situation," Bell said. "We don't have any political stake in this thing. It just became apparent that we needed to rethink this."

"We understand all too well the enormous pressure that the museum came under. But who wins?" asked Middle East Children's Alliance president Barbara Lubin in a press release. "The museum doesn’t win. MECA doesn’t win. The people of the Bay Area don’t win. Our basic constitutional freedom of speech loses. The children in Gaza lose."

Pictures from the exhibit, which were culled from art therapy sessions at a number of Gaza children's centers, show images like a bomb painted with American and Israeli flags crashing into a street filled with dead bodies, helicopters destroying a city and a boot decorated with a Star of David stomping on a Palestinian flag.

Some 1,400 people died in the conflict and about 300 of those were children.

Susan Johnson, who discovered the pictures during a tour of Gaza last year and has since worked to bring them to the United States, says she was "shocked" upon hearing of the cancellation.

The Silicon Valley Mercury News reports:

Many of the drawings have been exhibited in galleries, libraries and churches across the East Coast and Midwest. Johnson said that some people had told her that the more graphic images of war were too difficult to view. But this is the first time a venue has pulled out of exhibiting the art. "It's very unusual for a museum or a place that encourages free speech and free expression," she said about MOCHA's decision to call off the exhibit.

The museum's move has already drawn controversy online. Some in the blogosphere have questioned if the pictures were actually drawn by children, while others have circulated petitions in an effort to get the exhibit reinstated.

The museum has twice shown war though the lens of children's art—a 2007 exhibit featured drawings of WWII by children in the Kaiser shipyard and a 2004 exhibit showed art done by Iraqi children immediately following the American invasion.

MECA is currently searching for a new venue to host the exhibition.

Take a look at a selection of pictures from the exhibit:

truly the Oakland museum has fallen from grace in the eyes of everyone in the arts. They can never ever live this down. Humanitarians everywhere should boycott them.
On the flip side though, this occurrence is really revealing about zionists and their impact on the media in the United States. If children with crayons cannot have a voice I have little doubt the truth can.
I have worked in the arts for over 15 years and never have I seen such a repulsive display of censorship by a museum.

Words fail me in my disgust at this. The children of holocaust survivors deny Palestinian children the chance to show how the children of holocaust survivors killed their parents while stealing their land.
There are no depths to which jews will not sink.

I can understand why these pictures could not be shown at the museum.... Not very comfortable for many people.

Right. Because, as we all know, the purpose of art is not to evoke emotions, understanding or empathy, but instead to wrap the veiwer up in a cloud of ignorance and denial...

The drawings are now being shown at a nearby storefront. The Oakland Education Association endorsed showing the pictures.

Which isn't quite the same as being shown in a museum, but thank you to the shop for standing up against this human dross and for supporting the kids.

The sad truth is America is controled by the Zionists! They will never let the light of truth be shown in America and the main stream media! Luckily, most Americans are now getting their news on the internet and learning of the horors in Israel! Just look at what is happening at the UN and the Palestinian vote, same thing... I never knew Americans supported the murder of women and children, just like the pictures indicate! hmmmmmmm

The right wing Zionist have taken this to a whole new level. Now they're censoring children, in all places, San Francisco. It is beyond shameful. We wouldn't want to confuse those pesky Palestinians with human beings.

Why is US so loyal to the Zionists? Does the Jewish Community of the Bay Area, Oakland control the economy and welfare of US?

The museum allowed pictures by Iraqi children showing US war planes but Palestinian children's artwork might offend Israel. Why no protest about the Iraqi children's art?

Can't anyone see, simply by reading these comments, why children should not be dragged onto this battlefield?

Why would you want children to show you the horrors they lived though..... Oh....I see.
10:41 PM on 09/17/2011
I'm sure the children did not "want" anything to do with this. They are naive proxies of their parents. What you see is the parents' "show", where they embellish or even fabricate "children's" drawings.

And so you have it. A museum values the politics of the moment over art. In short, a vocal minority complains about the art, and the art gets removed. What then is art? Is it not art if loud, angry people say its too politically motivated to be art?

It's too bad because a little controversy could have been a good thing for the museum and the state of art. Besides, if art doesn't provoke thought or feeling, what then should it do> Reinforce complacency? Make people feel good about themselves?

The art here represents a viewpoint. Perhaps it's a viewpoint that some people want silenced. But a viewpoint is merely that, a viewpoint. We don't go to a museum wanting to see only what the authorities of 1600 wanted people to see. We go to the museum to evaluate everything ... the better to understand truth in all its many forms.

The shame of this doesn't even fall on the museum so much as it falls upon those who protested this for fear of the views of Palestinian children, the depictions of what they know deemed unworthy of consideration. By devaluaing their perspective, we devalue those children, and humanity itself.
10:30 PM on 09/17/2011
I say again: Anyone, during any time of conflict in history, could have decided to use their children for "the cause". I think it speaks to the humanity of the factions that don't. Palestinians strap bombs to their children. Now, we are supposed to feel guilty because the children think of death? I feel incredible sympathy for the kids. They don't know how they are being abused. Anyone who would parade a child for the cause is cowardly and despicable. (Oh, and by the way... the art I saw was not done... entirely... by children.)

Clearly they do have a political stake. Their actions make that clear.

A more accurate question would be, why are you afraid that we're exposing you and Alice Walker for who you are? Don't be afraid, the sooner you embrace who you are, the better it is for you.
