Paul Krugman 9/11 Blog Post Stokes Controversy

Paul Krugman

First Posted: 09/12/11 08:59 AM ET Updated: 11/12/11 05:12 AM ET

Paul Krugman drew conservative outrage on Sunday when he wrote that the anniversary of 9/11 had become a marker of "shame" for the U.S. (Scroll down for Krugman's new post on the subject.)

The New York Times columnist wrote a blog post called "The Years of Shame," in which he said that "what happened after 9/11" was "deeply shameful." Krugman castigated people like Rudy Giuliani and President Bush as "fake heroes" who exploited the attacks for their own personal, political or military gain. He also said that many in the media had "[lent] their support to the hijacking of the atrocity."

Krugman concluded, "the memory of 9/11 has been irrevocably poisoned; it has become an occasion for shame. And, in its heart, the nation knows it." He said he had turned off the comments on the post "for obvious reasons."

Conservative commentators quickly seized on Krugman's post. Blogger Michelle Malkin called him a "smug coward." Writer Glenn Reynolds called the post "an admission of impotence from a sad and irrelevant little man." A writer at the Big Journalism site called Krugman "vile." And former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld announced that he was cancelling his subscription to the Times.

However, some progressives defended Krugman. Blogger Glenn Greenwald vociferously backed the post on Twitter.

"Michael Moore & The Dixie Chicks were just as right back then as Krugman is today - but today the taboos (& their enforcers) are much weaker," he wrote.

And, on Crooks & Liars, Nicole Belle said that Krugman was simply telling the truth. "That day was the impetus for us to attack and invade Iraq, a country that had nothing to do with the attacks and posed no threat to us," she wrote. "To date, we've lost 4,752 allied service members in Iraq and over 100,000 Iraqi civilians. How is this not a black mark of shame on the legacy of 9/11?"

UPDATE: Paul Krugman responded to his critics on Monday, writing another blog post about the 9/11 anniversary. He did not apologize for anything he wrote. Rather, he said that "the two years or so after 9/11 were a terrible time in America" and that "I'm not saying anything now that I wasn’t saying in real time back then, when Bush had a sky-high approval rating and any criticism was denounced as treason. And there’s nothing I’ve done in my life of which I’m more proud."

Krugman did say that "the American people behaved remarkably well in the weeks and months after 9/11: There was very little panic, and much more tolerance than one might have feared." But he insisted that "the memory of how the atrocity was abused is and remains a painful one. And it's a story that I, at least, can neither forget nor forgive."

Bill Clinton left an economy that was in good shape. Taxes were finally paying down the debt and here comes along Bush & Company...... Claiming that money that is paying down our National Debt is really your money (i.e. the rich).

Then he started 2 unpaid for wars, I mean no war tax, instead, 2 tax cuts. I'm sorry, that was so irresponsible but look closer at his ideology and it was to line the pockets of his friends (and of course Cheney's) and bankrupt the Federal Government. Same goal as Al Qaeda (to bankrupt America).

The Medicare Drug benefit, again, no tax to pay for it, is a classic example. He gave so much to the pharmaceutical companies, whose stock prices flew through the roof at the time, and the goal was to eventually bankrupt the entire Medicare insurance program.

I posted about finding out the truth behind America's belief that Saddam was behind 9/11. I got replies about how nobody ever thought that...that I was living a liberal lie...etc

for those who don't remember
http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2003-09-06-poll-iraq_x.htm

This is a poll from USA Today that says 70% of the people believed it!! That's even more than I remember.
Is it not our patriotic duty to find out who misled us???

Great point. We need a full investigation of the Bush administration lies.

Where are any reporters putting this question to Cheney during the promotion of his book of lies?

Here is a 1999 report from ABC News that links osama with saddam. Note the refeerence to "intelligence sources". And again - note the year.

I would gladly take any heat associated for the honor of punching Krugman in the nose. His mouth should go into the Smithsonian as demented relic.

Did i say anything about free speech....all for it mate. What i'm not for is anything that spews out of Krugman's piehole. He needs to move to someplace like Russia when his comments are more acceptable

You want to understand what Krugman is talking about read Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein - See how the bush team of idealogues use disasters to privatize economies for the profit of a few - Here are a few articles on Bush and 9-11 - http://bit.ly/mZXZ1P

This is the first thing I've seen from Krugman that makes any sense to me.

It was not just the US Government that took advantage of terrorism, the British and Australian governments acted in the same way to impose draconian laws on their peoples. The Patriot Act and all the associated bureaucracy and wars are domestic terrorism aimed at the American, British and Australian people.
Hermann Goering said at the Nuremberg Trials: “Naturally the common people don't want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.”
George W Bush, Tony Blair and John Howard learned that lesson well.
Paul Krugman is courageous for pointing out the domestic terrorism of the neo-cons. Naturally the Right attack him. in Hitler's Germany he would have been put in Dachau Concentration Camp and probably never have been seen again.

Btw, it is cowardly that Krugman would chose to disable the comments to his blog.... perhaps it's because he is good at dishisg out the criticism, but not very good at taking it.

LOL! Look at the vile hate from your side. Look at the death threats to people like Michael Moore, who dared to point out Bush's lies.

What Krugman did took great courage.

It speaks volumes that you can't find a single fact that he's wrong about or a single thing to attack him on other than blog posts.

LOL!

I can find something "attack him on" his disrespect for the thousands of peopled murdered on 9/11 by tuning a day of remembrance into an opportunity to attack politicians he doesn't agree with.

And BTW..... don't assume that just because I find fault with someone on the left that I am automatically on the "other side"..... I am an Independent.... I don't need to follow party dogma, unlike others... I think for myself.

While we wait for you to admit your errors below, you can take note of "spud3" above, who is advocating violence against Krugman.

Are you starting to fear the violence of the right-wing yet? This spud character reminds me of the tea party debate audience that cheered for the death of poor people.

What is the argument against what Dr. Krugman has said? Immediately after 9/11, there were pro-American demonstrations in many Muslim countries, including Iran, as well as throughout the world. The Bush administration threw away that support in its jihad against Hussein and the Axis of Evil. These are facts. Look them up.

Well said. I see a lot of vile hate against Krugman, but no actual intelligent argument or challenges to his facts.

Krugman is right. And I might add the entire 8 years of GWB was shamefu. And painful. Bush/Cheney and their office were bullies more intent in keeping Republicans in control forever than doing anything purely good to actually help people. Everyone should read what a respected and former GOP strategist/staff Mike Lofgren wrote about why he left the GOP after 16 years. He wrote, "It should have been evident to clear-eyed observers that the Republican Party is becoming less and less like a traditional political party in a representative democracy and becoming more like an apocalyptic cult, or one of the intensely ideological authoritarian parties of 20th century Europe." Generally Krugman is correct. After 9/11 we had the support of the world, which was thrown away by Bush's war in Iraq.

We will see a future where Bush and Cheney could face war crimes for what they did to the wrong people. Find our attackers and get them but don't hide behind a horrific event to further personal agendas and wealth as these 2 did on the backs of American Service men, women and 100,000 civilians. The numbers for our vengeance don't balance any score.
06:35 PM on 09/14/2011
It's astounding to me the amount of support this man gets on this site. If I am reading this correctly, then the liberal establishment is as most people believe, the "we hate America party". I'd ask you to not bother commenting, 'cause frankly there isn't anything you can say that wouldn't just bolster the idea that you people are simply mindless when it comes to the real world, but I'm sure you'll have to vent some spleen somewhere trying to convince people smarter than you that you have two brain cells to rub together. Just pat each other on the back, have a big sloppy group kiss, and go about figureing yourselves the rulers of the universe.
