It's one thing for an adult to encourage two middle-school girls to fight one another. It's another for the so-called adult to get a piece of the action herself.
Police arrested Long Island mother Daphne Melin, 32, on Monday after she allegedly provoked two 12-year-old girls to fight one another, and then reportedly spit on and kicked another girl who was watching, according to authorities.
The Sunday afternoon brawl outside William Floyd Elementary School In Shirley actually began away from the playground, as two girls had a dispute over Facebook, cops said. Eventually, the social posting drew a crowd to the school parking lot, according to the New York Post.
Police said that as the two girls fought, Melin cheered them on.
But that was only round one.
"When the brawl wound down, Melin was just getting warmed up -- cursing and spitting at a young girl who was watching and then knocking her down and kicking and kneeing her to the neck and head, cops said," according to the New York Daily News.
The girl who Melin is accused of fighting spoke up against the situation, telling the adult to stop the fight, CBS New York reported.
Some reports identified Melin as the mother of one of the girls, but police said that they could not confirm the relationship.
Melin is charged with attempted assault and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child. She will be arraigned in December.
