David Axelrod: GOP 2012 Candidates Offer No Job Solutions

09/13/11 08:28 AM ET   AP

David Axelrod

WASHINGTON -- Barack Obama's top political adviser says none of the president's Republican challengers has much to say about how they're going to create jobs.

David Axelrod told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Tuesday that Rick Perry and Mitt Romney, the leading GOP presidential candidates, both "support the same economic theory that got us into this mess in the first place."

Axelrod said that while Obama has offered a specific plan "to put people back to work," Republicans only want to preserve tax cuts for the wealthy and corporate loopholes while rolling back rules for Wall Street.

Obama sent Congress his job creation proposal on Monday. Axelrod said the White House doesn't want to "play games," and does not intend to negotiate to break up the package.

The President needs another messenger. Mr. Alexrod isn't it.
12:09 PM on 09/14/2011
Axelrod is way off base here. Romney released his 59 point plan before the president came out with his rehash of old plans he is calling the jobs bill. The rhetoric that comes out of this guys mouth is laughable. He says Obama has offered a specific plan, he has not, he is only offering the same worn out stimulus plan he gave us three years ago. Talk about the same policies that got us in trouble in the first place. As long as Axelrods statements have us in a giggling mood try this.

We have yet to see anything the repub/tp have presented to the congress..that did not have to with benefiting the big business and nothing to do with helping with the lack of jobs..they are all about making it easier for the companies to make higher profits, pay less taxes, and move jobs out...why they are so determined to undermind their own countrymen I do not know.,but it is sad and sick..A plan has been presented and should be put through and the GOP/TP need to get off their "no to everything" behinds and do something for this cuntry for a big chnage..
12:15 PM on 09/14/2011
You talk about moving jobs overseas and helping big corporations. What about Jeff Imhelt the head of GE and also the head of the presidents job council just sent an entire division from Wisconsin to China with more to follow?? Not to mention that GE paid no taxes last year and you critisize the GOP with a straight face??? Give me a break please.
You all complain about the amount of money Bush was spending for eight solid years and when your guy gets in and triples spending they all blindly follow and now want more money for this jobs bill. Tax and spend tax and spend it is all you know. Hypocrits one and all.

Corporations do not exist to provide jobs. They have no vested interest in doing that. Corporations exist to make profits. The more goods or services they sell, the more revenue they bring in. But then they have to pay employees (and other expenses). And that decreases the amount of profit they make.

Obviously, they must pay somebody to generate those goods and services. But it is always in the best interest of the bottom line to generate and sell the most goods and services with the fewest expenses (including employees) possible.

Many people seem to have this strange idea that if we just let companies keep more of their revenues, then they will hire more people. But that is only true to the extent that they can also sell more goods and services - and in enough quantity to offset the cost of hiring.

Corporations are not charities. If the late 1800s and early 1900s taught us anything about industry and corporations, it should be that corporations do not inherently value their employees' safety or financial stability. They only value those things to the extent that it helps them retain better employees and thus make more/better products leading to more profit, that it helps them look better in public eye leading to more profit, or that it prevents government interventions that would lead to less profit.
12:25 PM on 09/14/2011
Lets not forget that those same corporations pay out dividends that benifit all the people who invest in the company and in case folks on the left have not noticed that includes anybody who invests through their 401k programs or any where they put their money. All of this bash the rich corporations only hurt all of us who have any kind of investment or retirement program.

Well AMERICA CAN QUIT CALLING HERSELF THE LAND OF THE FREE. OR THE NATION THAT SEEKS JUSTICE FOR ALL. OR THAT ALL CITIZENS ARE EQUAL IF BORN HERE. BECAUSE THEY HAVE SHOWN BY WHO THEY ELECT TO CONGRESS AND WHAT THOSE ELECTED OFFICIALS DO IN OFFICE THAT PROVE BEYOND ANY DOUBT THAT THIS COUNTRY IS WHAT OUR LEADERS HAVE SAID ALL ALONG....... LIES AND CHEATS. NOT EVEN THE GOD THEY CLAIM TO WORSHIP IS EVEN REAL. BECAUSE IT IS OBVIOUS THAT GOD HAVE NO CONCIOUS.

Poverty has gone up under Obama. Now Obama wants to extend unemployment benefits for 3 years. !! Wow, I think I'll go get myself fired now. Then retire in 3 years. Why work to pay for all the other moochers. ? In Obama's plan, a potential employer can be SUED for discrimination if it does not hire an unemployed person. How does THAT stupid rule, make employers even want to interview people who are unemployed. Stupid is as Stupid does! The man is CLUELESS>

Poverty has gone up as a result of the high rate of unemployment, the result of the credit crisis, massive corporate layoffs to protect profits from lack of demand. Poverty is the highest since 1993.
Please get your facts straight. I do not know what Jobs Bill you read, or what faux news channel you watch, but there is nothing in it saying a potential employer can be sued for discrimination if it does not hire an unemployed person. The jobs bill, on the contrary, provides tax incentives to companies who hire the long term unemployed and verterans. Do you have a problem with that? You shouldn't.
07:01 AM on 09/14/2011
You should really get your facts correct.
"Obama's bill makes it illegal to discriminate against unemployed

The proposed language is found in a section of the bill titled "Prohibition of Discrimination in Employment on the Basis of an Individual's Status as Unemployed." That section would also make it illegal for employers to request that employment agencies take into account a person's unemployed status."

Finally they get a pair! GEEZ! Our society is dissolving before our very eyes and they all appear to be asleep at the wheel...exactly what got us into this very mess!!!

Repeating the same mistakes....IS INSANITY - Giving money to Wall Street who threw away our future on a crap shoot because the stock market is a gamble!

Those who keep saying that they are giving away the bank are liars; they don't want equality for ALL! What you should know is that they are nothing without US! If we say STOP, then they must change.

Give us our money back and let us spend it to create our own PROSPERITY that’s what we AMERICANS DO. Hard working middle class people create an economy not some fat cat who works in a corporation.

When did we lose our minds! After 9/11 we wanted real security not this faux security. If we become the example of GOOD then we can't be portrayed as EVIL!

Does any Republican here even dispute the notion that the GOP has no jobs plan? Or the assertion that their main policy goals are to "preserve tax cuts for the wealthy and corporate loopholes while rolling back rules for Wall Street."?

The Republican voter only will repeat the same nonsense of their puppeteers. Tax the middle class, and lower the tax rates to corporations

I heard this on the radio a few minutes ago, Democrats need to keep asking.....NAME the NAMES of companies that are so "uncertain about the future" that they are not hiring.....I'd like to know the names of those sitting on the biggest profits ever, that are not hiring due to the so called "uncertainty"

good! Get specifics that can be disproved!
Of course you know they will just dodge the questions---but after a while it will become obvious to everyone with ears that they are lying again.
03:14 PM on 09/13/2011
Yeah, I thought after those tax cuts, we were gonna get jobs from the "Job Creators"Where the heck are the Job creators and WHO are they? Republicans seem to know, yet, I have never heard a name.
03:48 PM on 09/13/2011
Someone made a comment in an article I read about jobs stating that China has stolen Jobs from the USA. That is not true. The US corporations sent those jobs to China for less than a buck an hour. The US Corporations have betrayed the US. It's not just Capitalism, its unadulterated greed.

Very dramatic video of volunteers saving a motorcyclist from under a burning car. The tea party crowd last night would be shouting to leave him there if they didn't know he had health insurance.
