10 U.S. Cities That Grew The Most In 2010: BEA

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 09/13/2011 5:19 pm   Updated: 11/13/2011 4:12 am

For some of the country's largest cities, last year was a good one for growth. None less than the technology hub otherwise known as San Jose.

Metropolitan economies grew by 2.5 percent last year, measured by gross domestic product, according to recent statistics from the Bureau of Economic Analysis. And while that growth makes up for a decline of that same percentage one year prior, some most certainly expanded quite a bit more than others.

Indeed, nearly all of the country's fifty largest metro areas experienced economic growth of some form last year, and manufacturing may have been the most widespread driver. Some cities, however, have other industries to thank for their economic expansion. San Jose, located in the heart of Silicon Valley, saw some of the strongest GDP growth thanks much in part to the information industry that surrounds it. Indeed, 3.6 percent of its 13.4 percent growth is attributed to the tech sector.

It remains to be seen if metro areas can sustain the same level of growth through the end of this year, especially with the manufacturing industry stalling, and national GDP expanding by just one worrisome annual percentage point in the second quarter of the year. Perhaps the country will look back on last year with some form of nostalgia.

Of the country's 50 largest cities, here are the ten that saw the biggest percentage gain last year, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis:

10. Indianapolis, IN

I can't believe people are still flooding into California at the same rate as a few years ago, seeing as how that states fiscal situation is pretty far gone, and unemployment is around 12%, and San Jose of all places, that would be like my 12th choice of where to live in California.

Growth Growth Growth.

There is more to well-being than growth.

The article is about economic growth in large metropolitan regions as based upon certain measurements. Your remark makes little sense since it is not an editorial, simply a study. There is no argument being made that a comparative local GDP increase is the only measure of "well-being."

My remark is based on the merit of this article and hyper-focusing on economic growth above all other concerns.

Many of these cities have jobs (San Jose aka Silicon Valley, New York, Boston) or they are nice affordable places to live. We have seen growth here in Denver. Lots and lots of CA residents move out here

How much of that growth was due to Immigration? As a former New Yorker, I can say many neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens are being revitalized by Asians (Chinese) and Latinos (Mexicans) Contrary to the Tea Party hype Immigrants are making a positive difference and they don't believe people without health insurance should die

The topic is cities that grew the most, not necessarily the greatest --
10:31 PM on 09/13/2011
...and wouldn't a 3 year old deduce that growth equals influx of people. Influx of people mean jobs are available - the city offers something others don't? Beauty, culture, safety....that's a given.

Done that - been there. And by the way - your fellow lib traceymarie "turned" the discussion into " me vs. a hate filled little toady lib".

Your state is bankrupt - and riddled with earth quakes and nuts. Please stay there.

"Growth" in itsellf is not always some desirable goal. Where is the water going to come from for growing cities? In a lot of places demand for water is outstripping supply. Direct immigratiion and the higher birth rates of immigrants are the main factors in increasing our population by thirty million per decade. This is not a good thing. As you will notice in the post below me, the person from New York does not see growth as a good thing.

The story is about growth in GDP, not growth in population.

You know you have too many citizens when one city has a population higher than most states.
