Dennis Kucinich Re-Election: Democratic Rep. Seeks Seat Despite Ohio Redistricting

THOMAS J. SHEERAN   09/14/11 07:08 PM ET  AP

CLEVELAND — U.S. Reps. Dennis Kucinich and Marcy Kaptur jumped into re-election campaigns in the same newly redrawn congressional district across northern Ohio on Wednesday, setting up a primary fight next year between two veteran Democratic incumbents.

The district stretches alongside Lake Erie from Kucinich's hometown of Cleveland to Kaptur's political base in Toledo.

The eight-term Kucinich announced his move in an email asking supporters to help his campaign in the new district, which he says favors him because 57 percent of registered Democrats come from his old district. Kucinich had toyed with the idea of running in Washington state.

Kaptur said in a telephone interview from Washington that she would highlight help she has provided on a low-profile basis for projects in the Cleveland area, including a new veterans hospital and efforts to save jobs at the NASA Glenn Research Center.

Kaptur said she had talked with Kucinich on Tuesday about her political plans and said there were no hard feelings between them. "We are friends. This is hard for us," she said.

Ohio is losing two of its 18 U.S. House seats in the redistricting process because of slow population growth over the past decade.

Kucinich, without mentioning Kaptur, told supporters he was stunned that the new district included so much of his political base. He said most of the Republican part of his old district was divided among three Republican incumbents.

"With your help I clearly have a good chance to be able to continue to serve the people of Ohio and to remain a strong and outspoken voice for jobs, peace, clean water and clean air, education and civil rights," he said.

In Columbus, House Speaker William Batchelder, a Republican, said he didn't know whether the district would favor Kaptur or Kucinich but added, "I know that whoever serves that district in all likelihood will be a member of the Democratic Party."

Kaptur's spokesman, Steve Fought, said the district map could be changed a bit before final approval by state lawmakers but added, "It will likely look a lot like it looks now."

Kucinich, a two-time presidential candidate and former Cleveland mayor, has a progressive following and visited Washington state for several recent political events to raise his profile.

Kucinich has earned a reputation as a maverick with strong anti-war views and a quirky streak.

He has called for creating a "Department of Peace" and wanted to impeach former Vice President Dick Cheney, an effort opposed by House Democratic leaders.

Kaptur, the longest-serving Democratic woman in the House, was first elected to Congress in 1982.

She's wildly popular among union workers and laborers in her district. Labor leaders urged her to run for governor in 2006, but she decided to stay in Congress.

Never afraid to speak her mind or take on party leaders, she openly criticized former President Bill Clinton for his support of the North American Free Trade Agreement in the 1990s, saying it cost Ohio thousands of jobs.

I'm a republican and I say Redistricting is controlling votes.

Dennis Kucinich democrat who has been congressman to his district for years should not be penalized due to republicans taking advantage of their ability to "redistrict" the area.

That he should have to consider moving to another state is wrong [and I like Washington state] .
Will dirty tricks of politics not stop? Just b/c "party in power" can redistrict "legally" does not make it right. They do not deserve respect ....... when they do Dirty Tricks.

If you put a mustache on Kucinich he reminds me of Hitler, and the relevance of that comment to anything other then a brief flash of humor, is hard to find. Dennis seems like a decent guy and the typical "do gooder" liberal career politician. He could go back to his "community organizer" days if he is not re-elected and live off of his congressional pension. He probably gets something from his days as Mayor as well. Sometimes term limits are a good idea.

Kucinich says all the right things at all the right times. Unfortunately, he is all about grandstanding and much less about actually getting things done. He will be primarying my current Representative, Marcy Kaptur, with whom I don't always agree, but who works hard accomplishing those things that can be done rather than "speechifying" about things that aren't going to happen.

Like Ralph Nader, who made a big splash in a campaign that was destined to fail in 2000, Kucinich is all about speeches but never does the ground work necessary to make his agenda happen. When has Kucinich made a serious effort to build consensus among those Democrats that could help him accomplish something--anything--beyond the speeches? The last thing we need is to lose a hard worker in favor of another orator ... regardless of how appealing his pipe dreams may be.

Exactly why he wasn't welcomed to Washington State as a candidate. We always welcome him as a guest..as an idea man..but, we have our own, fine Democratic Representatives.

At least Kucinich's speeches are much better than Obama's. On top of that Obama's results are mostly negative.

No representative can achieve anything by himself... his first job is to talk the right talk and convince the rest to follow. The Demo party is rotting in falsehoods and corruption because too few are ready to SPEAK the truth.

My respect for Kucinich has nose dived over his activities shilling for the dictatorships of Libya and Syria. You can't shill for these thugs and promote the causes you do. SHAME ON YOU.

Kucinich is one of a handful of Democrats that actually has a spine and really cares about working people.

shelby35, please mention a link that says what you think Kucinich is guilty of, I found nothing tying him to Libya and support for Khadafi.

He cares enough to make a regular spectacle of himself, but will cave when given a free ride on Air Force One to a campaign destination. And Marcy Kaptur, whom he will be primarying (and who is my current Representative), has been a hard worker who spends her time trying to accomplish what can be done rather than grandstanding about things that aren't going to happen.

He LOVES the limelight, and is afraid that he might lose his red-headed, tall, stately, beautiful wife if he doesn't have an important position onto which she might hitch her star.

I suspect that his motives are genuine, but while he is out grandstanding and promoting ideas that will never happen--at least not unless he actually works on building a consensus with fellow Democrats which he has not done in all his years in Congress--Marcy Kaptur (my Representative), who will be his primary opponent, is hard at work accomplishing what can be done.

Dennis Kucinich is an embarrassment to the State of Ohio. His outrageous stances don't represent the people of our great state. Please, people of the North Coast, support and vote for Marcy Kaptur.

Kucinich was the victim of more underhanded and cowardly tactics from republicans who fear people like Kucinich. He has proven himself to be a tireless advocate for the middle class. He has always shown a vast amount of knowledge on every issue and will win a seat in the House regardless of the republican attempts to eliminate him.
