Nevada Special Election Results: Republican Mark Amodei Beats Democrat Kate Marshall

Mark Amodei

By CRISTINA SILVA and SANDRA CHEREB   09/14/11 01:08 AM ET   AP

LAS VEGAS -- Former Republican state senator Mark Amodei has won Nevada's special election to fill a seat in the U.S. House.

Amodei easily bested Democrat Kate Marshall Tuesday in the rural Nevada district that has never elected a Democrat.

Amodei is a former state GOP chairman. He promised to fight for a balanced budget amendment in Congress and signed an anti-tax pledge.

Amodei was elected in Nevada's 2nd Congressional District to replace Republican Dean Heller. Heller was appointed from the House to the Senate in May to replace Republican John Ensign. Ensign resigned over a sex scandal.

Marshall had hoped to become the first Democrat to win the northern Nevada district and had campaigned as a moderate. She is the state treasurer.

I haven't posted in some time, but reading the comments about the Nevada election stirred me once again to sound the alarm. When will we stop slapping each other on the back and pretend to laugh at the "extremists"... Folks, when there are more of them than us, we are the extremists! When we cling to our party, inspite of some events we disagree with... are we not the "koolaid" drinkers? Give the Tea Partiers credit... they didn't like what was going on in their party, they set out to change it! ... And did so with no central driving committee... We may pretend Nevada is no big deal... what about New York? Connecticut?... Please, I beseech you... let us stand up for what is right about our party and stand against what may have gone awry. Let us not continue to take comfort in our own company (with numbers dwindling), but let us begin to defend what actions we think are right, and condemn those we think wrong. Let us walk away from people who represent too narrow an interest, and find those among us with a respect for America. Why is it we make fun of patriotism? Why does the foot soldier in our military vote against us? Why does the rural parts of our country roll their eyes, and turn away? Why are traditional liberal voters turning to the right? Is it our message? or our messenger?

Speaking as resident of the 2nd Congressional District that just elected Mark Amodei, it would've been a news story if Marshall had won. This district is over 58% Republican and has voted the following: Bush in 2000 and 2004; John Ensign in 2006 and in 2002 (the first time the lying cheat ran for the Senate in 2002 against Harry Reid but lost); voted for Sharon Angle (the Tea Bag Lady who never has had a private sector job in her life) against Harry Reid;almost voted for Sharon Angle for the 2nd District to be the Republican nominee in the 2008 congressional election but lost to Dean Heller who subsequently was overwhelmingly voted in as the congressman in 2006 and voted in lockstep with almost every W initiative;, voted for that education cutting governors Jim (one term) Gibbons in 2006 who had previously been the congressman representing the 2nd district and voted like a true lackey of W for the eight years he was president, then the district overwhelmingly voted fro Brian Sandoval for governor in 2010 who is on his way to cut more from education then Gibbons did; and McCain for president in 2008. I could go on with the illustrious listing that this district has voted for but the point is they are all Republicans. Mickey Mouse (often has in disguise of Jim Gibbons) and Goofyy (in the disguise of W) could run and win this district. When a Democrat wins that will be news.

After that big long huffing and puffing post you just thru out here one thing that you said was absolutely correct and let me quote you please (When a Democrat wins that will be news).
The Republicans/Tea Party will no longer take a back seat to anyone, We are here to stay and will reclaim whats rightfully ours in 2012 and that is the White House and spank as many Democrats that stand in our way and along our way.

Only history will reflect whether the Tea Bag nation becomes a force in American politics or is a one hit wonder. Per the latest opinion polls from moderates and independents they are losing their mojo.

Since they are a movement that appears to be in favor of capital punishment (cheering when Perry mentioned that Texas had executed over 250 inmates), euthanasia if a person doesn't have health care (Ron Paul suggesting that it is a life choice to have healthcare), violent revolution if they don't get there way (Sharon Angle's second amendment solution), financial russian roulette with the debt ceiling, I can only hope they go down in the ash heap of history as many other movements of their ilk have

Imagine that...right in Harry Reids back yard....and in a State that ranks second from the bottom with highest unemployment in the country....The highest Unemployment rate is California?...that would be Nancy Pelosi's state...

It seems some votors are starting to see a pattern....

You can always see a pattern if you look hard enough, even when its not there. When its your hate for the other side that guides you all you will see are the patterns you want to see. Unemployment in California, for example, is high alright but it isn't because of Pelosi unless you know she went around firing everyone in the private sector. Maybe we could blame the Terminator for it. Yeah, he fits the pattern...HHMMM.

Why is it that at every turn Obama watered down the agenda he was elected to carry out? Half measures on every issue. His bending to the often outrageous right, who cater to corporate interests and only give lip service to actually doing something to help this country is why he is in trouble. BUT, faced with a republican agenda of making this country poor enough to satisfy the corporate overlords need for cheap labor (make no mistake, that is the agenda), I will not support that agenda by voting anything other than Democratic. It is the last best effort to thwart the republican plan. The massive shift of wealth should be a massive clue to anyone who is not a millionaire to wake up and vote for your lives and livelihoods.

So then you must have the details of the republican jobs plan.
You must know what they are going to do about the last fifteen years of declining middle class income?
Know why everything they propose is beneficial to corporate America and detrimental to American workers.
Know why deregulation is good for the bankers, corporations and bad for everyone else.
Know why the republicans favorite billion dollar war supplier, Halliburton, can't adequately wire a shower area for the troops without soldiers getting killed.
Know why a republican would want to weaken child labor laws?
Know why anyone who isn't a millionaire would support an entity who so obviously does not give a rat's hairy hiney about the American people, except at election time?

Care to enlighten the rest of us as to why the republicans are so special to you?

As I have said before Mark Amodei defeating a democratic Kate Marshall does not affect President Obama commanding re-election in 2012. I am sure Kate did not tell Nevada people how bad TEA Party and GOP are. American now sees TEA Party and GOP as evils skilled in lying voters but later serving own self-interests. Nevada will be sorry electing a republican. Republicans don’t believe in equal rights for women, Blacks, racial minorities, family leave, sick leave, military leave and fair minimum wages. Republicans don’t belief in education for children or medical treatment rights for the poor or seniors. If they talk about the future, they mean how many mistresses they will have. That's why they divorce and take young women. Republicans don’t believe helping local small business retool their shops. Republicans encourage CEOs to ship jobs abroad leaving people here jobless but go abroad as excuse to meet their mistresses in Japan, China, and Mexico etc. - cheating on their wives here. Republicans agree with Paul Ryan to kill seniors who exhaust their $5000 voucher. Killing poor seniors and sick people is accepted by both TEA Party and GOP? Republicans love corruption to cheat on investors. Republicans and TEA Party fooled us in 2010 when we elected radical governors now abusing workers. I hope, like all Americans, Nevadans will learn the hard way before 2012 elections. We are going to get rid of all GOP at state and national levels. Please join me re-electing President Obama.

You will be soooooorry if you do not vote for Obama in November 2012. Ask the people of Wisconsin how much they are suffering after electing Republicans who are now abusing them. They are crying and coming to me saying: "We did not know Republicans were this bad. They are shipping jobs abroad leaving us here jobless. They are stripping us of rights gained through labor unions." But I told them before the elections, as I am now telling you, how bad republicans were. I beg you. Please prepare to vote for Obama and you will sleep good.

The answer lies in each of us individually

Harry Reid was the lone congressman along with lines of dems that preceded him when Nevada had only one representative. With the census of 1980 Nevada gained another seat and at the same time rural Nevada, like most of rural America began going solid red. Hence since the early 80's you are correct. Prior to that it was solid blue. Wonder what happened?
02:04 PM on 09/14/2011
Close?: The Democrat got slammed 58% to 36%. In wasn't even remotely close.

If you send an incumbent, if you send a democrat, republican or tea party back to D.C. in '12,
this is all your fault.

If you send a lawyer, a politician, or a lobbyist's tool, this is all your fault.

Do not vote by computer unless open source code is used.

Demand a mail in ballot, and keep a copy for your records.

If no one of value is running in your area, write in Jay Q. Public and vote for none of the above.

Personally, I'm tired of the quality of fool they 'tell us' we can vote for.

These so called 'debates' are a mockery, and the litany of demagogs they parade in front of us is shameful.

One has made fortunes putting thousand out of work.

Another, in politics for thirty years, and now fabulously wealthy, panders to money four states away while his own drought stricken state literally burns to the ground.

Another claims 'god' is smiting the earth, and us in particular, with weather and all manner of calamity.

And these are supposed to be among our choices for President of the United States of America?

It takes ones breath away.
