Texas Hispanics Going Hungry At An Alarming Rate

DALLAS -- Every Wednesday, Juana Cisneros, a native of Nombre de Dios in Durango, Mexico, pays a visit to God’s Food Pantry in Plano, a Dallas suburb.

“I lost my job a month ago and had to come for help because I have two kids,” she says in Spanish while waiting for her weekly provision of food.

Cisneros is part of a growing number of Texans in need of food assistance. About 9 million households in Texas are at risk of going hungry, according to a recent report by the Department of Agriculture, putting Texas's prevalence of food insecurity higher than every state besides Mississippi.

The situation is especially dire among Latinos and those who live closer to the Mexican border. The Texas Food Bank Network (TFBN), a coalition of 19 food banks serving more than 3 million families, reported that 44 percent of its food applicants in 2010 were Hispanic.

During 2006, the TFBN distributed food to 2.1 million people in the state. By 2010, that figure had risen to 3 million, an increase of 45 percent. In those last four years, there was also an 85 percent increase in food distribution to Texas children -- a spike from 673,000 to 1,200,000 kids.

A study of 254 counties by TFBN and Baylor University’s Texas Hunger Initiative found that counties along the border with Mexico had a higher risk of going hungry. In Hidalgo county, one of Texas's southern-most counties, nearly a quarter of all households are food insecure.

TFBN estimates that 1 in 7 homes are at risk of going hungry in the state, in spite of the increasing use of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Women, Infants, Children federal food programs.

“Hunger is a growing problem in this state every year, and the Hispanic population is affected most,” John Charles Dwyer, the policy director for TFBN, said in Spanish.

Dwyer said the that growth among Hispanic families applying for food assistance is due to the recent recession, poverty, a high rate of joblessness, exacerbated by the lack in education, language barriers and “social and racial discrimination.”

“There isn’t enough stock in the food banks because the number of those in need rises annually,” he said.

Meanwhile, Cisneros says that in her native Mexican town she experienced poverty, but she doesn’t remember going hungry.

“There was a small, sewn field behind my house that at least had corn and greens for the family,” she says.

About 9 million households in Texas are at risk of going hungry, according to a recent report by the Department of Agriculture, putting Texas's prevalence of food insecurity higher than every state besides Mississippi.......................a feat Rick Perry hopes to reproduce throughout the US. The real "Texas Miracle" would be if he could manage even his own state

Why can't she speak English?
If food is so plentiful in Mexico, perhaps she'd like to return home.

The states in the southwest have the burden of dealing with these illegals. Meanwhile, all that the other states do is criticize the way they deal with them. Maybe you in the north can invite the masses of illegals up to your comfortable homes in order to make things a little more equal.

Oh, I get it. It's all the scapegoats' fault that people are hungry. Let's see. If we're keeping score, they're responsible for taking our jobs, seats in our classrooms, valuable beds in the hospitals, and now I guess they're eating all the food as well, so 9 million people in Red State Texas are hungry. You people are shameless

Are these hispanics illegal? If so, go back home. We are not responsible for your hunger or taking care of you. You're country has that responsibility. Go home.

I get your point.

Now who invited you here? No one. Austria beckons! Goodbye.

I was born here. This is my country. If you are a citizen I don't care where you're from or how you got here. If you are illegal, then go to Austria or anywhere. Don't expect my tax dollars to support you. Your home country has that obligation.

look at there employment adds.. " Need hard worker, plenty of hrs $8.00 hr"... Illegals and immigrants return to mexico, central america or s america claiming they work less for better living. Or they, hear that other states pay better even now some talk of Canada. Texas has had no increase of wages since the 90's and once could claim cost of living to be cheaper and no state tax... Those days have been gone, since Bush and Cheney got in office. These jobs in Tx pay a third less then other states.. It's not hard to do the math.. It will get worst..

That last statement was very telling. It may have been humble, but if you have land to farm, even an acre, you will never go hungry. The problem is when people lust after cars, fancier dwellings, etc., as if progress as a soul is made through what we possess. I realize that NAFTA policies created many displaced farmers but all that money sent home could be spent on buying land and farming.

We have Mexicans and Central Americans living in New Paltz and many are avid gardeners They grow, tomatoes, Chile peppers and Cilantro Some grow beans, corn and sun flowers. Many of the organic farmers (we have many here) hire them because they are use to low tech farming

This is not an immigration issue, everyone has certain unalienable rights for being human. The most terrible vile criminals have a right to eat in this country and it is inhumane for people to go hungry in the richest country in the history of the world.

Further more most of the Spanish speakers in southern TX are either here legally or they are citizens. Remember that TX used to be Mexico and I have family that has lived in southern TX going all the way back to when TX was part of Mexico.

Children who are citizens do get food stamps, but part of the problem is the illegal parents do not, so a family with two children will get food stamps to feed two children but the family might have 4-5-6 adults livn in the home...so no food stamps will not feed the entire family.

I couldn't care any less if illegal immigrants don't have food to eat. They broke the law and they don't belong here.
