Arctic Sea Ice Shrinks To Second Lowest Level

By SETH BORENSTEIN   09/15/11 03:46 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON -- Arctic sea ice melted this summer to the second lowest level since record-keeping began more than 50 years ago, scientists reported Thursday, mostly blaming global warming.

"This is not a random event," said oceanographer James Overland of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. "It's a long-term change in Arctic climate."

The new measurements were taken by the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo. It reported that the amount of ice covering the Arctic hit its lowest point late last week, covering just 1.67 million square miles. Only in 2007 was there less summer sea ice, which has been dramatically declining since scientists began using satellites to monitor melt in 1979. Other records go back to 1953.

Each summer, sea ice melts and then refreezes starting in the fall. The summer minimum is a key measurement for scientists monitoring man-made global warming. This year's level is 36 percent below the average minimum of 2.59 million square miles.

Since the 1980s, summer Arctic ice has shrunk from something the size of the Lower 48 United States to an area that covers just the region west of the Mississippi River, said Snow and Ice Data Center senior scientist Walt Meier.

The University of Bremen in Germany, which uses a different satellite sensor and has been monitoring levels since 2003, reported last week that this year's sea ice actually fell below the record set in 2007.

Ice Data Center research scientist Julienne Stroeve said two factors cause summer sea ice to shrink more than normal: worsening man-made global warming and localized and seasonal Arctic weather. In 2007, local weather conditions – wind, barometric pressure and sea currents – all were the worst possible for keeping sea ice frozen, she said. But this year, those seasonal conditions weren't too bad, she said. Even so, the data center's measurements show one of the worst years for melt.

Stroeve thinks the problem is that after years of shrinking sea ice, what's left is so thin that it doesn't survive as much as ice would have in past years. Meier said the sea ice is 40 to 50 percent thinner than it used to be.

Using computer models, scientists have predicted the Arctic will eventually be free of sea ice in the summer by mid-century; a few researchers say it could happen as early as 2015 or 2020. Overland and Meier said they think 2030 to 2040 is more likely for an ice-free summer.

Sea ice is crucial for polar bears and walruses, Overland said. Sea ice also reflects the sun's heat, so when the ice melts Earth retains more warmth, Overland said.

The Arctic Sea Ice shrunk to the second lowest summer minimum of the new century.

However, little noticed is the fact that the yearly minimum occurred approximately two weeks earlier than in 2007. So this year the ice extent began recovering earlier, and now remains above the level of the ice recovery in 2007.

This earlier recovery start provides additional weeks for the ice extent to grow to its annual maximum in early 2012. It also provides more evidence that the claim of an Arctic Ice "death spiral,' which was made by several alarmists in 2007, was simply false.

R2, if the Arctic sea ice shrinks to a new minimum earlier and earlier in the summer, it is not a good thing and any school child would know that.  This Republican-spin gets more and more simplistic.

I find the video to be ridiculously ironic...at the end, the 'journalist' says 'but the good news! Tens of billions of gallons of oil under the arctic ice for drilling!" Yay! More fossil fuels made available by...our act of burning fossil fuels!

These so-called scientific measurements of polar ice are simply biased, liberal, fact-based efforts to scare us into concern for the world we live in. The God who created us in God's image and who blessed us with intelligence and a conscience would never expect us to do anything about this. Drill baby, drill.

So there has been no decline in the Arctic Sea Ice Extent over the past four years. Also, the ice mass of Greenland has declined by only .1 percent over the past 12 years.

This is indeed an alarming situation.

In a letter to the editors of the Times Atlas they agree that the Greenland ice cover is reducing but at nowhere near the extent claimed in the book. "A 15% decrease in permanent ice cover since the publication of the previous atlas 12 years ago is both incorrect and misleading.

"Numerous glaciers have retreated over the last decade. Because of this retreat, many glaciers are now flowing faster and terrain previously ice-covered is emerging along the coast – but not at the rate suggested. Recent satellite images of Greenland make it clear that there are in fact still numerous glaciers and permanent ice cover where the new Times Atlas shows ice-free conditions and the emergence of new lands."

According to the researchers, the volume of ice contained in the Greenland ice sheet is approximately 2.9m cubic kilometres and the current rate whereby ice is lost is roughly 200 cubic kilometres per year – a decrease of about 0.1% by volume over 12 years.- The Guardian

But scientists remain troubled by the final statement in the latest press release from HarperCollins, "We stand by the accuracy of the maps in this and all other editions of The Times Atlas". Scientists still contend that the latest map of Greenland is highly misleading and is not a proper map of the ice extent and topography. The map shows only the extent of ice greater than 500m thick (furthermore, it appears to show contours of Ice Thickness rather than Surface Elevation). All permanent ice cover less than 500m thick has simply been erased.

As far as the UK scientists are aware, Greenland is the only map that does not show the topography and extent of ice correctly. The maps of Antarctica, Iceland and European Alps all appear to look sensible. If HarperCollins had applied their "greater than 500m ice thickness rule" to other areas of the globe, there would be virtually no glaciers mapped in Iceland or the Alps.

The scientists urge HarperCollins to acknowledge that their mapping of Greenland's ice is incomplete and misleading. We would encourage them to issue a corrected map for Greenland which shows the full ice extent and the true surface topography. The current map is in marked contrast to the overall quality and authoritative nature of the rest of the Atlas.

Global warming has actually resulted in an increase in food availability for the polar bears. The number of researchers heading to the arctic has increased dramatically and studies indicate they are easy to catch and high in protein.

A denialist is someone who, when they see a ball bouncing down the stairs, will tell you, based on the upward bounces of the ball, that the ball is actually bouncing upward.

Sorry. The overall trend of ball is that it is going down. Similarly, the ice is disappearing.

And we are only talking about the extent, or surface AREA of the ice.

Recent studies have shown that the ice is currently at the lowest VOLUME since they have been recording it, which would be since we have had satellites recording the area.

Of course, the difference between AREA and VOLUME seems to be beyond the grasp of most of our friends in the denialist camp.

Let us all give thanks to Saint Ronald of Reagan for helping dumb down the American public to the point where scientific literacy is so low that the fossil fuel overlords can run things pretty much as they want to. Amen.

Global warming is a natural event and the effects are not all bad, two respected researchers claimed yesterday.

Authors Dennis Avery and Fred Singer looked at the work of more than 500 scientists and argue that these experts are doubtful the phenomenon is caused by man-made greenhouse gases.
Climate change is much more likely to be part of a cycle of warming and cooling that has happened regularly every 1,500 years for the last million years, they say.
And the doom and gloom merchants, who point to the threat to the polar bear from the melting North Pole, are wrong, the authors say.
Even if our climate is changing, it is not all bad, they suggest, because past cold periods have killed twice as many people as warm periods. Mr Avery said: "Not all of these researchers who doubt man-made climate change would describe themselves as global warming sceptics but the evidence in their studies is there for all to see.

And they both are a joke, with funding primarily from Agricultural fertilizer companies. Avery's statements that DDT did not cause egg thinning, for example, are quite contrary to the evidence presented.

And the publish with/support the Heartland Institute. Their work is NOT accepted (to my knowledge) in peer-reviewed professional journals.

Here are some points to consider in case you really think that the dated and discredited work of Avery and Singer and their Heartworm Institute hold much weight in the global warming discussion:
* Avery was very careful to crop his temperature plots at 1985, rather than show the data to 2005. What a cherry picker!!! Foul!!!
* While Europe and India may have enjoyed the benefits of a warming period, the ancient Mayans probably did not look at it that way. Neither do modern Texans.
* Saying that global warming is good for you is like saying that asbestosis is good for you because it prevents your lungs from ever catching on fire.

The climate change religion is strong with you !! If 2007 was the "record low" 2008 2009 and 2010 and 2011 had to be above the record low so therefore there was and is more ice than the "record low"

It is a good thing that most people could care less about climate change theory. And the rats are jumping the climate change ship:

Nobel Prize-Winning Physicist Who Endorsed Obama Dissents! Resigns from American Physical Society Over Group's Promotion of Man-Made Global Warming

Nobel prize winner for physics in 1973 Dr. Ivar Giaever resigned as a Fellow from the American Physical Society (APS) on September 13, 2011 in disgust over the group's promotion of man-made global warming fears

Giaever announced his resignation from APS was due to the group's belief in man-made global warming fears. Giaever explained in his email to APS: "In the APS it is ok to discuss whether the mass of the proton changes over time and how a multi-universe behaves, but the evidence of global warming is incontrovertible? The claim (how can you measure the average temperature of the whole earth for a whole year?) is that the temperature has changed from ~288.0 to ~288.8 degree Kelvin in about 150 years, which (if true) means to me is that the temperature has been amazingly stable, and both human health and happiness have definitely improved in this 'warming' period."

I'm curious about this statement. As far as I know, the "head" of Skeptical Science is John Cook, "...Climate Communication Fellow for the Global Change Institute at the University of Queensland. He originally studied physics at the University of Queensland. After graduating, he majored in solar physics in his post-grad honours year. He recently co-authored the book Climate Change Denial: Heads in the Sand.". He may not be a climate scientist in the strictest sense, but he very definitely endorses Anthropogenic Global Warming. Are you speaking of someone else?

"New data indicates that changes in the Sun's output of energy were a major factor in the global temperature increases seen in recent years. The research will be unwelcome among hardcore green activists, as it downplays the influence of human-driven carbon emissions.

As the Sun has shown decreased levels of activity during the past decade, it had been generally thought that it was warming the Earth less, not more. Thus, scientists considered that temperature rises seen in global databases must mean that human-caused greenhouse gas emissions - in particular of CO2 - must be exerting a powerful warming effect.

According to a statement released by Imperial College:

Although the Sun's activity declined over this period, the new research shows that it may have actually caused the Earth to become warmer. Contrary to expectations, the amount of energy reaching the Earth at visible wavelengths increased rather than decreased as the Sun's activity declined, causing this warming effect.
"These results are challenging what we thought we knew about the Sun's effect on our climate," says Professor Joanna Haigh of Imperial, lead author of the study.

"It does require verification, but our findings could be too important to not publish them now," she told hefty boffinry mag Nature, which published the new research.

Well, over the past century the sun has been increasing in overall activity. According to this study, that should cause the Earth to cool. Instead the Earth has been warming, so this is yet another sign that CO2 in the atmosphere is causing the warming.
