Casey Anthony Ordered To Pay Florida Almost $100,000

First Posted: 09/15/11 07:17 PM ET Updated: 11/15/11 05:12 AM ET

A Florida judge has ordered Casey Anthony to pay nearly $100,000 for costs related to the investigation of the disappearance of her daughter, Caylee.

In an order filed this afternoon, Judge Belvin Perry said Anthony is responsible for $97,676.98. The amount is significantly lower than the more than $500,000 officials were seeking.

  • A breakdown of the reimbursements is listed in the court order.
  • Florida Department of Law Enforcement:61,505.12
  • Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation:10,283.90
  • Orange County Sheriff's Office:25,837.96
  • State Attorney's Office:50

Anthony could, however, end up owing more.

Casey Anthony Investigative Costs Order

On July 5, a jury of seven women and five men acquitted Anthony of killing 2-year-old Caylee. The little girl's remains were found in December 2008 near the family home, some six months after she was last seen.

During her first-degree murder trial Anthony's attorney, Jose Baez, said Caylee had drowned in the family swimming pool. The revelation was in direct contrast to previous statements Anthony had given police, saying her daughter had been kidnapped. Because Anthony misled police, officials say thousands of dollars were wasted on search efforts and the investigation into Caylee's death.

According to the terms of the court order, the Orange County Sheriff's Office, the agency that headed up the search for Caylee, has until 4 p.m. Monday to file additional expense reports. If they are received and approved, Perry said he would enter an amended order.

I do not know how to thank those who are so sweet in awarding me one way or another. I wish I could award so many of you. This is the nicest group I have ever been involved with and definitely for such a worthy cause. I just hope so very much we can bring justice to Caylee's death someway, somehow and in the near future. We certainly have tried so hard to understand why she was abused causing her death. I think we are so close, so close. I just feel if Casey was not involved, she would have come forward. In my heart, whether it was she alone, someone else involved which I do not believe for one moment, I feel her life should not be a bed of roses. Hope no one feels I am being cruel. There was just too much evidence from pictures of her partying and whatever in many ways that showed she was not deserving of this beautiful child. Well Casey will not have Caylee now will she. Caylee is in a safe place forever sad but true. Caylee was saved in a way that means she will never live into a life where she may have been possibly abused much, much worse because I think Casey would have taken her with her to these wild parties and in time Caylee would have had a horrible, worse abused life due to her little innocence. Caylee is out of harms way now forever.

I agree with you, Tater. The search was inadequate after Kronk called in with the body sighting and location. They should have covered the area. If the bag was right on the ground at the foot of an incline, they could have seen part of it regardless of the tree. That was the first mistake I believe the investigation team made. Prior, as you said, all costs should go to Casey's responsibility. All lies had lead to a solid blank wall until Kronk's call. Then, Perry can charge accordingly after that call depending. Thanks for your response, Tater. We all came in here with not one idea as to what actually had occurred except tv. And that was confusing most of the time. Remember all was kept hush hush. Trial was nerve racking for me. On here, research done by many, has brought out a lot of good information to help us understand and to grasp the truth as far as we can get until the 16th. We have made it that far at least. From there we as a group know don't we but not down to the exact details. Maybe someday.

I've said that any money owed by Casey should be from the day of the 911 call to the day Kronk called. After that, regardless of whether she lied or kept silent was in the hands of law enforcement. They sat on their hands at that time and now want to collect? Sorry, they failed to to their job and shouldn't be rewarded for it.
09:54 AM on 09/23/2011
You are right, Tater. I agree with you most certainly. I saw too many mistakes made in this investigation. I mean they actually brought the facts up about such and publicized the mistakes. No wonder Casey did not have to pay for any of her cruelty to Caylee. I am so sorry that Ashton did not have one charge that could have been a little less than the top three. We all know just about for certain the jury would have jumped for it and at least she would be in there paying for her negligence to little Caylee.

She can't file bankruptcy, one has to have had credit, owed money, in order to do that. Not just file because of a court order. Filing does not protect one from a legal action against them anyway.

This mindset-'just file bankruptcy' is one of the reasons this country is in the mess we are in.

Blame the men. It's because of their opinion of women that [we] are treated differently. Histrionic personality disorder(HPD), histrionics, PMS, hormones, etc... all label women as being off balance, or inferior in many ways to men. Until that kind of thinking stops I don't see much improvement. Sure, we have 'come a long way baby', but we are still considered second class citizens to most of society. Children are seen as even less than that.

If a child did not have someone there for them, to defend and be their best advocate, I hate to say what can happen/happens in many situations.
06:09 PM on 09/19/2011
I was raised to respect all women..and I still don't know what PMS means and I'm in my late 40's..I'm helping to raise my 15 year old daughter and there is a lot of things I'm still learning...But respect,I've got that one down...

I honestly dont understand why she isnt being charged more. She Should have to pay for her entire trial. Whether or not she was found guilty is kind of moot. SHE was the one who caused the need for the trial. If she had just told the truth from the get go there would have been no investigation or trial. Why did she wait until her trial to have her atty tell that ridiculous "version" of the truth? She had 3 years to "admit the truth" and all that money would have been saved. She should even have to pay for her incarceration. She and her lies caused it. Let her pay for her "silence".

What a long strange trip it's been...
06:17 PM on 09/19/2011
Dollz: By arresting her they were basically saying "we have evidence to prove you are guilty". Once arrested she had the right to remain silent, and let them try to prove her guilt. They did prove she was guily of lying, and those are the charges she is responsible to pay. Her silence did not cause the trial, the trial was caused by the prosecutors trying to prove her guilt.
08:57 PM on 09/19/2011
I most respectfully disagree. SHE was the one who LIED from the get go. SHE was the one who made the statements that did not corroborate the evidence. Even when faced with the evidence she continued to lie. Before they arrested her she could have told the truth and they most likely wouldnt have arrested her to begin with. If she had only TOLD THE TRUTH none of this would have been necessary. SHE is the one who single handedly caused the chain of events that landed her in jail. She is the one who hid a child's death. She is the one who said the child was kidnapped. She is the one who refused to just say "It was an accident, Im sorrry. so very sorry. She still hasnt! If she had just said those two words at any time during the 3 year investigation Florida would have been saved about 2mil. And what about all the volunteer organizations who gave time and resources while she swore the child was "missing"? Why should they not be remibursed for the critical funding she knowingly "stole" from them while she watched them all painstakinly look for her child? She had plenty of time even before she was arrested to just say "she died, I wasnt watching her, Im so sorry." If her story were even true she would have had time while the paramedics were there trying to resucitate her child. But that never happened. And we all know why.

Really?

The trial was caused because Casey led the police on a search for a missing child who was never missing, but indeed dead. Casey lied about her daughters whereabouts, her condition, and the nanny.

Reading the threads about Nancy Grace below, I just have to add this. Blame it on the autumn rain, all the spiders coming indoors to get out of the cold (eeek!), or just blame it on my how goofy I feel tonight. I have to say it.

What is with the eye shadow thing? I mean, someone must surely have schooled her in it, told her it was a fabulous look, but seriously... it makes her look possessed. And it's topped off with that helmet-head haircut. What's with that?

I submit a notion for your consideration. It seems to me Casey Anthony hasn't been held accountable for just about everything that happened in her life. Even when she had a child, it was her parents who provided for the child. Now that the courts ARE holding her accountable, there is dispute that this is "sour grapes" or "vengeance." I submit that the enabling that got her to where she currently is remains alive and well.

Ours is a strange country. The victims of 911 responders are denied adequate health care, families are working two jobs to keep afloat, states are tampering with employees' wages and benefits, yet there is a segment of America that feels Casey Anthony should receive special treatment, special consideration, in terms of those things SHE is accountable for? It's a crazy, crazy, topsy-turvy world!

Very Well Stated Jessi !! It is confusing to many of us as well, how some feel she's being persecuted instead of because of her Prosecution & Convictions on these 4 Counts Of Lying!! I guess a bod & boobs make the difference in this case. If she were a man, I wonder how many would even waste their time commenting either. As a woman myself, I see no difference in any of it. She is being required to pay her debt to society as any other convicted individual would have to do! I'd fan you again if I could too!

Nancy Grace should pay a huge fine for creating an hysterical, media circus and inciting citizens to figuratatively form a Lynch Mob.

The prosecutors and investigators did a lousy job. She spent a year in jail and was found "not guilty." Would you want that kind of justice?

Let it go.
