McDonald's Death Now Attributed To Soda Fountain Gas Leak

By RUSS BYNUM   09/14/11 07:53 PM ET   AP

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Carbon dioxide piped through gas lines to a soda fountain leaked in a McDonald's in Georgia and sickened 10 people, including a woman who later died after being found unconscious in a restroom, police said Wednesday.

Investigators determined a leaky gas line between the walls caused the gas, used to pump carbonation into sodas, to build up a week ago to the point where people inside were unable to breathe.

"It caused what is normally a harmless gas to be pumped into the wall cavity and leak into the women's restroom," said Pooler Police Chief Mark Revenew. "At a high level of concentration, it displaces oxygen."

Firefighters were called Sept. 7 to the restaurant in Pooler, about 10 miles west of Savannah, and two women were found unconscious in a restroom. They were later admitted to a Savannah hospital, where eight others from the restaurant were treated and released. Eighty-year-old Anne Felton of Ponte Vedra, Fla., died the next day.

Investigators initially suspected customers fell ill to noxious fumes from cleaning chemicals. An autopsy found no trace of chemicals in Felton, Revenew said, but it indicated she succumbed to asphyxiation.

The restaurant's franchisees, John and Monique Palmaccio, said in a statement they "are committed to running safe, welcoming restaurants."

"We worked closely with the authorities to determine the cause of this incident and we've taken action to correct the situation," the statement said.

The police chief said the owners had replaced the soda fountain's gas lines and valves and were allowed to reopen the restaurant.

"At this point we don't anticipate criminal charges," Revenew said. "It just appears to be a mistake."

The U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration is also investigating. OSHA investigators were conducting interviews last week, looking into possible workplace safety violations.

Investigators caught McDonalds trying to produce the world's first cloned female, a project McDonalds had code-named: McEve. Obviously they were determined to succeed. Police broke into a McDonalds' warehouse and found a hundred cases of McRibs.

10 people sick and no one investigated? Did any one leak test the gas connections after installation? Who installed the equipment? Big fat law suit for sure, but it may not be all Mac's fault.

Just goes to show the importance of workplace safety. I'm sure OSHA will show up!

I don't know what I expect, really. Fast food restaurants can't get my order right when I say "no ice".

I believe if the gas doesn't get you, their food certainly will....but, that might take years. Interesting that we had NO obesity crisis in America before fast-food became the norm.

don't blame the restaurants for that. blame parents who are too lazy to be bothered to cook for their families. and it takes no longer to cook dinner for your family today than it took the pioneers in the 1800s (pioneer women worked plenty hard even though they were "stay at home" moms).

People choose to restaurant because they work a lot of hours, or just want to spend what little free time they have doing something else with their families. The days when one income supported a family allowing mom to stay home and be domestic have been gone for decades, in the 1800's men, women and their kids spent all their time finding, storing and preparing food, cooking was incidental, there was no choice.

I don't think fast food is the cause for obesity it's actually how fast and how much people eat their food. I know plenty of skinny people who eat mc donald's but they don't eat the crap for breakfast lunch and dinner..All in moderation. Poor old lady she probably just wanted her fish sandwich and coffee and croaked :-/

I remember reading about a couple of guys headed to a rave who asphyxiated when their nitrous tank sprung a leak in the car. At least they went out with a smile.

The only good thing to come from this will be this woman's family just won the lottery. Can you imagine what the settlement will be to her family for this? It will be 10's of millions.

This woman might have been someone her family "might not have traded for all the money in the world". Any percentage of millions in settlement would not be enough.
03:15 PM on 09/16/2011
There was no evidence of neglect, was there? If not, I would think that the payout wouldn't be that great, especially given the age of the decedent. Any money will be little compensation to the family and friends who were unexpectedly left behind.

Oi Vey! The woman wasn't poisoned, she asphyxiated. CO2 isn't poison, it just displaces Oxygen and suffocates you.
