Playboy Magazine October Issue On Sale For 60 Cents, Features 1960s-Inspired Bunny On Cover

Playboy October Issue 60 Cents

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 09/15/11 08:35 PM ET Updated: 11/15/11 05:12 AM ET

It's a big month for Hef and the rest of the Playboy empire.

A 60-cent issue, a 1960s-inspired cover, an NBC show and a marketing scheme to tie them all together.

The October issue of the adult magazine will hit the newsstands for 60 cents on Friday, reflecting the cost of the publication in its early years. Hugh Hefner suggested the discounted rate to "tap into the retro appeal of the show," editor Jimmy Jellinek told the Chicago Sun-Times.

The cover features NBC's "The Playboy Club" star Laura Benanti, dressed and posed much like a woman on a 1963 issue. The much-hyped series is set to air on Monday, Sept. 19 -- three days after the issue hits the shelves.

The discounted vintage issue will only be available on stands; Subscribers still pay their normal rate, according to the International Business Times. The news service states that Hefner expects to make up for any losses through increased advertising.

Playboy isn't new to pumped-up marketing, however.

After Hef's former fiance Crystal Harris called off the wedding, the magazine featured a sticker teasing the issue as the "Runaway Bride" issue, AudienceDevelopment.com points out. The publication contained content and photos revolving around Harris and the nuptials.

"The Playboy Club" has been stirring controversy since word of its release began circulating earlier this year.

NBC affiliate KSL in Salt Lake City has even refused to air the show releasing a statement highlighting the station's policy not to feature content "which significant portions of our audience may find objectionable."

The October issue will come with a swizzle stick "so that readers can enjoy a cocktail while they read," Jellinek told the Chicago Sun-Times.

Quick Poll

What do you think of Playboy's promotion?

Great marketing!

Eh, it's OK.

Skeevy tactic.

Who cares?

All TV and radio stations west of the Mississippi River (I believe) have their call letters beginning with the letter "K".

Thus, KSL would imply a station in Salt Lake City.

Those east of the Miss. begin their call letters with a "W", such as WBZ in Boston.

Dear KSL do show interviews of GOP candidates. Because if you do significant portions of your audience may find that objectionable. Or better yet do you ever show Obamas speeches cause a significant portion of your audience might find that objectionable. Dear KSL stop trying to think for me I would rather think for myself and make my own decision as to what I watch and don't watch.

Playboy has always been political. But in the last decade or so it went from being political to full-blown partisan. That's when I stopped buying.

We all know your game. Accuse anything that's not totally right wing of having a "liberal slant". Get over it.

Just like many on the left accuses anyone who has a different opinion as having a right slant, it works both ways RTF

Given that I am hardly "full-blown right wing" that pretty much puts your theory in the dumper. So keep your personal remarks to yourself.

Ban it. A brilliant way to drive up interest. These folks do know the kids will watch it online where if NBC was really smart they would make it R rated.

Newsstands almost everywhere. If you don't live in the city, try your nearest adult book store.

Yup, I prefer Hustler actually, but I will be buying this issue of Playboy just because. But I've always preferred Hustler in terms of articles, reviews, etc...A good chunk of the magazine is articles, with nudie pics sprinkled in there of course.

What can you say? It’s your dad’s magazine. The best thing Playboy has done in 25 years was putting Marge Simpson on the cover, otherwise it’s a huge yawn. Like it’s octogenarian icon, Hef, who now resembles Miss Haversham’s Wedding from Oliver Twist, limps along, struggling for life after "Girls Next Door".  Like an old hippie, Playboy just never got out of the the 60s, like the way Hef can’t dress like a grown man. High School girls wear flannel PJs, come on.

> Hue's getting more out of life than most people his age.

That is the propaganda that the magazine puts out to those who still believe. faved. cheers
BTW: Hue is a type of color and Hugh is Hefner’s first name.

I was a huge fan of Playboy,it was having the best cartoons, the best editorial content, cutting edge short fiction, and I am not ashamed to admit, an awesome variety of hotties. Then the magazine changed every thing ..........now i have stopped buying it.

I noticed about a decade ago that they seemed to start chasing Maxim's readers. Just their format. I remember the interview with Mike Piazza...everything that was going on with the Dodgers when he got traded would have been an interesting enough read for someone with an even remote interest in baseball, yet the whole interview was, "have you had a threesome? Where's the weirdest place you've done it?..", etc. Who was they writing this for, 18 year olds? That was when I first noticed it. I'll stay a subscriber as long as Hef's alive. But the magazine is disappointing compared to what it once was. I must say, however, I have noticed some improvement in the past couple of years. Seems Hef is determined to get the magazine as much back to its original form as possible. It's a tough business climate though, with practically no real consumer demand for his magazine. But I'm glad to see he's still here and trying.

Maxim's for the 18-25 fratboy crowd.  I had a subscription for a while but let it expire on its own because I'd outgrown it.

Playboy is a victim of its own success. Hef blazed the trail that the modern adult entertainment industry follows today, and it's that industry's success that wiped out Playboy's subscription base.

In an ironic twist, the creep factor of an elderly Hef having affairs with girls one quarter his age is a perfect metaphor of the disconnected status of Playboy in the modern world.

I still prefer the 1970s issues to those of today - few to no artifical body parts! Plus there were some damned good articles & interviews back then - yes, I like them for BOTH. And why some woman would ever want to get naked with a guy four times her age...YUCK! It's gotta be for the money...who wants to sleep with their grandfather (great-grandfather?)??? I wouldn't even ask a woman out who wasn't three-quarters of my age (47)!

Playboy's disconnect to the modern world is exactly why I'm still a subscriber. You almost speak as if the modern world is something good.
