Texas Drought 2011: Warm, Dry Weather Expected Over Next 3 Months

Texas Drought 2011

RANDOLPH E. SCHMID   09/15/11 02:19 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON — The outlook for the next three months is bad news for drought-plagued Texas and its neighbors.

And that comes after the Lone Star State recorded the hottest summer for any state for as long as records have been kept, federal weather and climate experts said Thursday.

For the United States as a whole, it was the second hottest summer on record and the eighth warmest for the world's land areas.

The oceans were cooler than the land, thanks to La Nina, a periodic cooling of the tropical Pacific Ocean which eased and now has resumed, potentially affecting weather worldwide. The cool water extends deep into the ocean, which will help maintain the ongoing La Nina, forecaster Jon Gottschalck of the federal Climate Prediction Center said.

Among those effects are warmer than normal weather in the U.S. great plains and cool, wet conditions in the Pacific Northwest.

And the new outlook for October through December reflects Texas at the center of a region of above-normal temperatures that are expected to extend into New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado, and could reach all the way to the western Great Lakes states. Cooler than normal is possible in southern Alaska and south Florida.

The outlook also calls for drier than normal conditions in that region, a weather pattern that likely will extend all across the Gulf Coast states to Georgia and South Carolina.

But wetter than usual conditions are expected in most of Washington and Oregon, possibly extending into northern California.

I don't think Texas has gotten serious about the drought yet since they are using over 10% of their water for fracking. I hope Texas gets some rain but I doubt it will be enough.

After reading this science blog from Houston, Texas, I don't see any relief coming to Texas for years to come. This is a very clear explanation of the weather phenomena contributing to this drought event.

I hope, for the sake of the suffering people in Texas, that they get some relief from the drought.

I also hope, for the sake of our country, that Rick the Corporate Pawn Perry gets thoroughly bashed by his fellow Republicans and is never again considered for public office outside of Texas.

What plans did he make to deal with this drought? This type of weather has been predicted for decades. Did he plan for more wild fires? No, in fact he cut back on fire fighting funds. Does he have a disaster plan for Texas agriculture in this situation? If so, we haven't heard of one being implemented. Did he perhaps take wrong climatological advice from the likes of right wing non-scientists like George Will, Glenn Beck, Jimmy Inhofe Marc Morano and Rush Limaugh? Looks that way.

Well, as long as Texas can keep pumping oil, all this climate stuff really just does not matter anyway, right? All hail big oil!

Besides the long drought, Texas is much too hot for me and I would never live there.

The Governor of Texas will refuse to take any possible action because he doesn't believe there is a problem. Maybe the heat has fried his brain.

Perry's prayers worked. God is has sent them a message, 'pull your heads out of your orifice. You are destroying your habitat and all of my creation.'

You can hold a prayer session like Perry did.

Despite Rick Perry's prayer session, god has been too busy what with both baseball and football; there are games to control and give the win to those who pray the most.

I think we should have a snow pipeline from the northeast to Texas. If it works for oil, why not? I would be glad to shovel in my excess snow! Then they could store it in reservoirs to use for the summer. Is this crazy?

Sounds like socialism stripping away states' rights to me.

What if your snow is toxic and contaminated? Then, the pipeline breaks? It's a disaster waiting to happen.

If you live in the northeast, keep track of the surface temperatures of the great lakes. That heatwave heatdome may be responsible for excessive precipitation in the coming months.

How is it that people don't see this for what it obviously is: God's punishment for Rick Perry.
