Davis-Monthan Air Force Locked Down For Hours [UPDATED]

Davis Monthan Air Force Base

09/16/11 11:18 PM ET   AP

TUCSON, Ariz. — Early on, it looked ominous when an Air Force base on the southern edge of Tucson was locked down Friday morning amid unconfirmed reports of gunfire. In the end, no shots were fired, and no weapons and gunman were found.

Traffic into the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base was limited as the unspecified security situation was first announced. Schools on the base were locked down. Ambulances and fire engines were rushed to the base, and a TV station reported that emergency workers were responding to a possible patient with multiple gunshot wounds.

This southern Arizona city was already rattled by January's shooting rampage that killed six people and wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 12 others. And then there was the specter of the 2009 shooting in Texas at Fort Hood.

But, as it turned out, no shots were actually fired. And an ambulance that went to the sprawling base where 6,100 airmen and 1,700 civilians work turned out to be responding to a more conventional call: A woman had gone into labor.

Col. John Cherrey, commander of the base, said officials were satisfied it was safe after a "floor-by-floor, room-by-room" search of the building where a gunman was reported.

"No gunman or weapon was found," Cherrey said. The commander, who held a two-minute news conference to discuss the five-hour lockdown, didn't answer questions from reporters.

Sgt. Maria Hawke, a Tucson police spokeswoman, said base officials told the department that its SWAT, bomb and hostage negotiation squads were no longer needed at the scene. Hawke said she didn't know how the situation was resolved.

Alison Bunnell, who lives at the base with her husband and their four children, was turned away during the lockdown when she tried to return to the base.

Bunnell said she was told that children at the base's schools were oblivious to what was going and were watching movies and eating snacks. She said she wasn't worried.

"We have exercises all the time," Bunnell said.

Davis-Monthan is near the Pima Air & Space Museum and the "boneyard" for old military and government airplanes that is a popular destination for aviation enthusiasts.

The base is the home of the 355th Fighter Wing, and provides attack airpower, combat support and medical forces, according to the base's Facebook page.

Security at military bases has gained more attention in the last two years since an Army major went on a rampage at Fort Hood in Texas in 2009. Maj. Nidal Hasan is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder in the shooting spree. Investigators have foiled other plots against military bases in other parts of the country since Sept. 11.

This is a warning , here is some information I found online the author of this website stated the media is being censored and there are indeed occult members in the government and believe it or not they want a one world government and religion, and there were over 800,000 Russian troops here when then president bush sent the troops your son, daughter, brother or sister to fight a so-called enemy . Julius Caesar: And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry .Rather the citizenry infused with fear blinded by patriotism will offer all their rights unto the leader and gladly so . There is alot more information on this website about the cover ups and the war and 9/11 mysteries. Im not trying to defame the government but this information is closer to shining the light then anything else .

it is a cover up. It was a Muslim man that snuck a cross the boarder(a terrorist). The government( Obama) wants it hidden. Cause it happened on his watch and its all he needs on his record right know. Just wait, it will come out. And that will be the end of him.

Being a long term resident of Tucson, I hope that the Airforce is going to pay for all the man power provided by the City of Tucson for this non-situation.

Being a long term Air Force member and now retired, I hope the city of Tucson repays the Air Force for all the manpower provided anytime there is a crisis or a need for a volunteer. A thank you would probably be enough payment. I also hope that they, primarily you, take a moment and thank them for their service and willingness to defend our nation. I'm quite sure the revenue generated from the base will cover the costs, plus any future occurances of its kind.

How in the heck do you start out with a story about a shooter and it turns into a woman having a baby?
These two scenarios are as far from each other as possible.
These darn news crews are as corrupt and lazy as it gets--DON'T REPORT SOMETHING OR EVEN MAKE AN ASSUMPTION UNTIL YOU KNOW FOR SURE WHAT IS GOING ON!!!
Assuming only tends to make an A** out of people who do so.

Thought this story might have been a spoof, as no mention was made on BBC World Service or on National radio in UK

In 1985 there was a real hostage situation at DM with a real gunman and 15 real hostages. Since Air Force personnel, except law enforcement, do not carry weapons it was a really scary situation. The Pima County Sheriff provided a negotiator, who, in conjunction with the Security Police were able to convince the gunman to release all the hostages at different points in the nearly 8 hour standoff. The gunman was sentenced to 7 years in prison on a plea bargain. This has brought back alot of memories and I would like to thank all those who saved my life that day.

Why would a civilian bomb squad and a Swat team come to a Military Base?
12:18 PM on 09/17/2011
USAF bases have their own security forces and bomb dogs who are trained primarily for wartime and not necessarily for civilian hostage takings. This scenario was probably a better it for Tucson PD.

The presence of a civilian Bomb Squad and Swat Team were on a Military Base was required because the modern Military is composed of trained dogs? Is that what you said?

I wonder what spending bill Obama sneaked through while the Huff Post keep us occupied with this non story ?? It seems that our government has been taken over by magicians ,smoke and mirror types, that have figured out a way to confuse us with one hand while sticking the other hand in our pockets !!! I like a magic show as well as the next guy ,I just like to know the price of admission at the door not while I am in there !!
