First Posted: 09/18/11 06:05 PM ET   Updated: 11/16/11 05:12 AM ET

Every week the numerous blogs covering the machinations of the Apple empire float tons of unconfirmed rumors, futuristic speculation, and questionably-sourced reports on what the company might be unveiling in the near or distant future. Let's take a look back at what these Mac blogs were excited about this week, from September 11-16. Check out last week's Apple rumors here.

The New York Times, the Grey Lady herself, has jumped right in to the iPhone 5 rumormongering party! Everyone say hello to the Times!

In their Bits blog, the New York Times wrote that Apple is "weeks away" from announcing the iPhone 5, according to an Apple employee who asked not to be named. Among the juicy tidbits from the Times write-up:

- The iPhone 5 will be "fairly different from the iPhone 4," in both appearance and on the inside, according to an anonymous Apple engineer.

- The iPhone 5 will come with an 8 megapixel camera and A5 processor.

- The iPhone 5 COULD include NFC capabilities for mobile payments. (In a nutshell, you hold your iPhone above an NFC reader, and the phone's info gets scanned like a credit card so that you can pay using your phone).

The blog did not include an actual release date for the iPhone 5 or any comment from Apple, just that the announcement was coming soon. However, 9to5Mac has some purported intel about a possible launch date.

I don't have an iPhone. I won't get the iPhone 5 only because it's too expensive. I have however had all the iPod touches since they first came out. I want the next one as well, but on one talks about the iPod touch. Only the iPad (which I also have) and the iPhone. What's the scoop with the iPod Touch 5th Gen? I heard Apple might be scrapping the touch line altogether. Is that true? Why is there no information on this? I'll even take a rumor or two.

The "and more" category seems endless and is probably best ignored

My old iPhone continues to meet my needs. For iPhone 5 to meet my extra needs it will need to include: 1.xray vision like the special glasses you used to see advertised in comic books years ago; and, 2. a special vibration capability like the orb in Woody Allen's movie "Sleeper" to keep me happy when my wife is traveling. Is that too much to ask?

Well, wait until they build up hype.
They wait about two to five years, or about two generations, for full effect.

so basically the iphone4s (aka 5) will be a spec bump to keep up with the rest of the world. Gotcha.

HOW DARE YOU BESMIRCH THIS, THE SECOND COMING, THE DAWN OF A GOLDERN ERA
08:24 AM on 09/22/2011
The dawn of a "goldern" era? Ha! Nice try, dude.
This iPhone won't be revolutionary.
The first one was new.
They just improve specs and add a few "extras" with a decreased thinness.
No golden era, or I think that is what you meant, for you, fanboy.

Well, I wish they would hurry. My current iphone is hanging on for dear life and may not have a few weeks left.

Is anyone else out there experiencing Bluetooth connectivity issues with their iPhone4? Specifically with handsfree car usage? I'm hoping the iPhone5 will fix this problem as my Bluetooth has been useless since my upgrade to iOs4 in my 2006 Acura TL

Yesterday afternoon's Apple Ad, in the guise of a news report.

Just found out the latest specs! Processor is an A5 SoC with dual core ARM cortex A9 CPU (1.2 GhZ) and dual core SGX543 GPU. An 8MP AF camera with backlit sensor and Xenon flash (like N8). Same external antenna but tuned for both US CDMA and HSDPA bands. A 3.8 inch IPS screen with same dpi as iPhone 4, but now it's edge to edge. A polycarbonate back with color throughout the material (like N9). 1080/30fps video. Slightly bigger battery. Weight and dimensions similar to iPhone 4 but 0.5 mm thinner.Just kidding...I have no idea what this thing will look like.

lol, are you seriously paying for data on that thing?  It takes 10 minutes to load a webpage on EDGE.
01:44 PM on 09/19/2011
My plan has unlimited data. Not so slow, could be quicker though.

Lots of guessing. It'll get here soon enough and when it does the feeding frenzy will begin. Early morning mall lines.

iWork for iPhone. iMad for iPad. iPlay with them all the time and iWife wants to end iLife.

Fine, another iPhone and MacBook...But what about the 2011 update for the MAC PRO?
10:23 AM on 09/19/2011
not until the SB xeons are released. Even then, they may opt for Ivy, however, they may just do away with the Mac Pros, like they did their servers. There's just not enough in it for Apple to pander to the pro community anymore when dinky Airs, ipads and iphones sell so well. They'll tell people to buy a mbp w/thunderjunk addon devices to make it mac pro equiv. Sad, but probably true. After that, they'll merge osx and ios, dumbing down the user experience. Great time to be in love with Apple!! Just ask Simon (aka CaptainObdouchieness)

So, a company not affiliated with Apple, supposedly spoke to an unverifiable source to confirm specs that have already been assumed to be released....And then at the end put "the blog did not include an actual release date for the iPhone 5 or any comment from Apple." This passes for news these days?

It gets clicks.  That's all they care about.  Real tech news should be found elsewhere.
