We've all heard that whole grains are good for us. But oftentimes all the proselytizing is just plain confusing. And you're still left wondering why whole grains are actually good for you. What makes whole grains so important to our diets is that they're minimally processed, which means they look relatively close to what they came from, i.e. an oat flake looks like an oat seed. Unlike highly processed foods (white bread made from white flour), whole grains have many nutritional benefits because they are not stripped of all the nutritional parts (the bran and the germ are removed from processed grains but not whole grains.) Eating grains in their original (natural) form is good for you because they add fiber to your diet and help ward off many chronic diseases, such as cancer.

Whole grains can be eaten and enjoyed in many forms, but some of the most pleasurable are in baked goods. Breads, cakes, muffins and cookies are made all the better when they include whole grains. Eating these baked goods not only benefits your health, they also taste great. Just check out our carrot-walnut cake, spelt cupcakes, and oatmeal crisps. These recipes don't sacrifice flavor in any way.
