Beer In Recession: Drinking At Home Costs Europe 260,000 Jobs: Study

European beer drinkers enjoying a cold one from the comfort of their couch, instead of at a barstool, could be hurting the economy, according to a recent study.

Beer production in the European Union fell 6 percent between 2008 and 2011 and consumption dropped by 8 percent during the same period, an Earnst & Young study commissioned by Brewer’s of Europe found. The declines cost the region 260,000 jobs, according to the study.

Though the period of the report coincides with that of the global financial crisis, the study’s authors say there are other trends driving the decline in production and consumption and the subsequent job losses: Consumers are opting for cheap beers over premium ones and they’re drinking it at home instead of at bars or restaurants.

Close to three-quarters of jobs indirectly attributed to the beer industry are in the hospitality field, which is why a boost in home consumption resulted in so many jobs losses, according to the study. Total employment in the European Union dropped 2 percent, while employment in beer-related industries fell 12 percent, the study found.

While changes in beer drinking behavior may not be high on economic policymakers’ priority lists, they could be having a larger-than-expected impact on European economies. The study’s authors estimate that beer industry’s impact on employment in the region is comparable to that of countries such as Finland, which accounts for about 2.4 million jobs.

And the countries most affected by the European debt crisis may be most affected by consumers’ increasing interest in drinking at home because their hospitality industries rely more heavily on beer drinkers heading to pubs and restaurants. In Greece, Ireland, Spain and Portugal more than 60 percent of beer drinking takes place in bars and restaurants compared with Baltic states where most people drink beer at home, according to the study.

Though a large-scale shift to home beer drinking could hurt the U.S. economy, it likely wouldn’t have as big of an impact as in Europe. Less than half of U.S. beer industry jobs come from the retail sector, according to a study commissioned by the Beer Institute and the National Beer Wholesalers Association.

The U.S. beer industry accounts for about 1.8 million jobs or just above 1 percent of the American workforce, the study found.

I have an alcoholic dog that is a hardship case. He goes out early when the bar opens up and drinks out of a bowl. He will start out with a screwdriver.I know where to look for him and the poor thing is enebriated by 10:00 am. I sit by him and take him home by around 12:00. Does anyone else have this problem?

A series of my own studies have proved this beyond doubt. However, many foxes have turned out to be dogs, and that is my next line of inquirey.

I don't know about the rest of Europe, but in Paris the cafes seem to be shooting themselves in the foot. I remember going out with friends and I thought, "Oh, I'm in a cafe in mid-afternoon -- it's too hot for coffee, wine will make me too sleepy, I'll just have a Coke and get a cold caffeine rush instead."

Ha. They were offering a 250 ml bottle of Coke (about eight ounces) for almost 7 euros.

Eeek.

This was just a little neighborhood place, out of the way. I know, I know, who goes to Paris to drink Coke. But I wasn't a tourist, I was living and working there for a year.

I started looking at the other prices and realized that -- as so often happens in large cities -- the prices in restaurants for ONE beverage approaches the price for six or eight from the grocery.

Realistically, who can afford to do that very often?

Beer should be drunk while sitting on a sidewalk, outside in the fresh air, not at home.

Drinking beer at home. I though Europeans are so progressive and US has lot to learn for them ...

Now they denying jobs for this who serve in the bar. May be they will soon outlaw drinking at home.

Who keeps funding these "butterfly effect" studies? Aren't there more important thing to spend money on. Like a cure for cancer, malaria or AIDS?
