'Les Mis' To Hit Big Screen In 3D

Whether you love them or hate them, Broadway musicals are known for their bombastic dramatics, and the upcoming film adaptation of 'Les Miserables,' the world's longest running musical, could take in-your-face drama to new heights by releasing the film in 3D. Market Saw reports that the film's producers are "strongly leaning toward going with native 3D" The cast includes Hugh Jackman, Helena Bonham Carter, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Geoffrey Rush and Emma Watson.

It remains to be seen whether the addition of 3D will add to box office appeal; the last 'Les Mis' film adaptation, released in 1998 and starring Rush and Liam Neeson, bombed. The upcoming adaptation is planned for a December 7, 2012 release, right in time for Oscar season, and will be directed by Tom Hooper, the filmmaker responsible for 'The King's Speech.'

'Les Mis' tells the tale of an ex-convict, played by Jackman, who tries to do good while being relentlessly pursued by an investigator, played by Crowe. The plot unfolds in 19th-century France, which is sure to bring many vivid battle sequences and period scenes. The story was adapted from the 1400-page novel 'Les Miserables' by Victor Hugo, and now the classic tome is coming at you in an action-packed 3D filmic experience.
