Olivia Munn Talks 'Daily Show' Casting, Backlash

Munn

Olivia Munn is perhaps the thinking geek's dream girl. Having pulled off the unlikely trick of rising to fame on both the video game network G4's pop culture hit, "Attack of the Show," and the cover of Maxim -- the ultimate geeky/sexy mashup -- she became a cult sensation.

Her introduction to the wider public, however, didn't match her early success. When Munn was hired as a correspondent on "The Daily Show," the backlash was fast and furious, the overarching complaint being that they had hired her for her looks, not brains or television presenting ability.

Following a harsh story from Jezebel that featured additional criticism of Munn and how the show treats women as a whole, the show's women staffers defended their workplace, with Munn co-signing a letter praising Jon Stewart and the support they feel from the show's producers.

Speaking to Movieline to promote her new film, "I Don't Know How She Does It," Munn recounted the experience, still obviously annoyed by the harsh words that were directed her way.

"They said, 'Oh, she's the Maxim cover girl,' which I get. But I'm just like, I'm sorry -- you can put yourself in a box, I just refuse to let you put me in one, too. My thing is, forget what my background is," she told the site. "They're trying to reduce it to, 'You can't be on the cover of Maxim and you can't be pretty and also be smart and funny. You're only getting by on your looks.' Tina Fey, who had her book come out recently and they did a '30 Rock' episode about my hiring at 'The Daily Show,' and she defends me on her book tour and says if I was overweight and had a mustache on the cover of Maxim, everybody [would be] saying, you go girl! But when I do it... I am who I am and I'm embracing everything that I am, and I'm not going to put on a turtleneck and hide away if I want to be smart and funny. You can be all of those things."

It rang a similar tone to what she said during the "controversy" last year.

"That story hurt a lot of people's feelings," she told Salon about the Jezebel story. "I'm not talking about Jon Stewart. "I'm talking about the women who work there and the women who came before me. 'Oh, I'm the pretty girl who came in?' That means that Nancy Carell isn't gorgeous? Like all these other women who have been there aren't beautiful women? Jon Stewart hires people that he thinks are funny. That's it. That's the only requirement."

While her "Daily Show" work was sporadic, Munn has proven her talent by moving on to other projects. She had a brief run on an NBC sitcom called "Perfect Couples," and, along with "I Don't Know How She Does It," she'll next star in "Magic Mike," the male stripper film directed by Steven Soderbergh.

The only new show of the season that caught my interest was perfect couples, and it got taken down... yes I watched more than 1 episode... it was funny and interesting...

it took a nose dive cause when people realized it had a "gay" male portraying a "straight" male.

I liked that show a lot... it had funny moments.

she may not be laugh out loud funny, but with her attractiveness, she is funny enough... I rather see attractive females attempt to be funny than overweight females who are funny.

SHE IS FUNNY ENOUGH.

I think she's neither sexy nor funny (for someone doing both for a living). I'd really like to and she does seem like a likable person. Maybe it will come with time.

I guess she's okay. I wish the Daily Show would bring back Kristin Schaal! She's hilarious.

I think the issue was that Olivia Munn is not funny. She's not funny but she's pretty & she's popular with the geeks, so one of those extraneous factors had to play a role. She is, to date, the least funny correspondent ever to appear on the Daily Show. If Samantha Bee looked like Olivia Munn, no one would care. Or, conversely, if Olivia Munn were as funny as Samantha Bee, no one would care. I like how the idea that she is about as comedic as my 8th grade history teacher in no way came into the equation when she analyzed the backlash against her.

....but I can also see how really conventionally "hot" women could be at a disadvantage as far as being recognized as funny...
still, they don't have to deal with what "ugly" people do. Funny how a lot of things kind of even out weirdly like that...

I recently noticed someone I think I find quite attractive, largely because of how funny she is. For those of you who know Mary Lynn Raksjub (think that's spelled right) - she was on Mr. Show w/ Bob&David, Larry Sanders Show, 24, and more... She is not really well known but a really funny actress. She is certainly not very conventionally attractive, but I was watching her in an interview recently on IFC Comedy Death ray and thought something like - "she really does not look that bad, and as funny as I think she is and how much I like her, you know - I think she's really pretty hot..."

You're just not funny. Nothing to do with your looks.

Disagree. She was the bright spot of her short-lived tv comedy, and she also was very funny in the current movie she stars in.

I like Olivia Munn, but I have a bit of a crush on Candace Bailey.

It's not her looks. It's the fact that she's not funny.

I love Munn, but she was horrible on the Daily Show. With Attack of the Show, she was better able to be herself and when totally scripted, could rely on the fact that everything on it was supposed to look cheesy. That didn't translate to the Daily Show well. Also the Perfect Couples show was a disaster.

Munn herself is hilarious. I think though that she reacts to the writing in her shows too much and has a somewhat narrow range outside of being Munn.

Perfect Couples was a decent show... I actually started getting into it... but people made such a big deal about the "gay" actors, it helped tank the show... actually it was the only new show that seemed the least bit interesting and it got taken down just cause they had a "gay" male as a "straight" character... the show was funny and interesting.
