Google Plus

There’s a hot new social media contender in town: She’s just shy of three months old and already boasts more than 25 million users -- the fastest growing platform of her kind. She possesses all of the bells and whistles of her competitors, plus a few cool surprises of her own.

World, meet Google Plus.

Still in beta, Google Plus (or G+ for short) is the search engine giant’s latest attempt at social networking dominance (and the successor to its similarly-veined -- but failed -- ventures, Google Wave and Google Buzz).

Seeking to improve upon the Facebook model, G+ has already created quite a stir in the tech world, but critics argue that its chances for long-term success still remain to be seen.

So what exactly does G+ have that Facebook doesn’t? Is it worth the switch? Let’s break down the pros and cons:

The Good

1. Hangouts

Definitely one of the cooler aspects of G+, hangouts are group video chats (à la Skype) that let you converse with pals in real time. Unlike Skype, which charges a fee for multiple users, up to ten people can participate in one hangout at a time, totally free of cost. Fun for a casual chat with friends, yes -- but also helpful for a team call with co-workers.

What’s more, if you want to watch the latest funny cat video with nine of your closest friends, now you can, thanks to G+ Hangout’s recent integration with YouTube. You can choose your desired video on YouTube, click “Share,” and then “Start a Google+ Hangout.” Instant party!

2. Circles

You love your parents but you’re sick of them stalking you on Facebook. G+ has got your solution: an innovative feature that allows you to organize your contacts into separate groups or “circles” (i.e. “Family,” “Work Friends,” or “Music Buddies”) and pick and choose what those circles can view.

For example, if you’d rather Mom not know what shenanigans you were up to last night, no worries -- just limit your status update to your “Friends” circle only.

Circles also let you filter your “stream” (the G+ version of Facebook’s News Feed). Done with work for the day? Simply click over from your “Work” stream to your “Friends” stream, and you’ll only see updates from friends.

G+ also recently added a “Suggested Users” feature that enables you to add famous folks (or strangers) to your circles. Similar to Twitter, users are grouped into categories (e.g., “Entertainment,” “Fun & Interesting,” and “Politics”), and you can browse for people of interest. Plus, you can see updates from your favorite celebrities or bloggers -- even if they’re not technically your real-life friends. (So, yes, you can take your Ryan Reynolds-stalkerdom to an entirely new level.)

3. Instant Uploads

Got some great vacation photos or videos you’d love to share, but dreading the task of having to upload them all yourself? No problem! G+ will do it for you (provided you have an Android phone).

Just snap the pic of your choice, and it will automatically be posted to a private online album. From there, you can share it with whomever you choose with just one click.

The Bad

1. Too Exclusive?

Three months into the launch of its beta, G+ still operates on an invite-only basis. So, despite its initial buzz, there’s been a noticeable decline of late in the number of visits to the fledgling site. And many critics believe it’s due to the limited access G+ has imposed.

Social networks thrive on interaction, they argue, and until G+ makes itself available to all, it risks alienating a lot of potential users, who will quickly lose interest in whatever it has to offer.

2. Real Name Policy

G+ requires proper names for its Google Profiles, asserting that it is an “identity service” which relies on truthful information from its users that will help it build future products. Pseudonyms are forbidden and make the user subject to account suspension, a policy that many oppose. What about users with uncommon names, or those who simply prefer using pseudonyms for security or privacy reasons?

Blogger Violet Blue learned this lesson the hard way: even though she had previously given two tech talks at the Google headquarters, her G+ account was suspended because her real name was not real enough.

3. Facebook is on to the G+ Game

Feeling pressure from the success of G+, Facebook has implemented a number of privacy changes in recent weeks that it hopes will help keep its users loyal.

Dig the G+ circles feature? Facebook just rolled out its improved “Friend Lists,” which allow you to control who sees what you post.

Like being able to read updates from people you’re interested in who aren’t your friends (à la G+ and Twitter)? Introducing the Facebook “Subscribe” button, which lets you keep up with personalities you admire. And as the battle for social network supremacy rages on, we can expect Facebook to continue to step up its competition

What do you think? Have you tried G+? Is it worth the switch, or are you a Facebook fan forever?

There is room for all 3 social networks in my view - peaceful co-existence!

1. Facebook - staying in touch with friends and family (sure, you can now "subscribe" to those beyond the realms of your social influence, but for the time being, it isn't the primary reason people use Facebook).

2. Twitter - keeping up to date with those beyond your realm of social influence (news services, celebrities, journalists, etc). On Twitter (for the majority of users), even though the majority of people you follow don't often know you - you still know them (mainly because, quite simply, they have some level of fame).

3. Google+ - keeping in touch and seeing content not from friends and family (Facebook) or from the rich and famous (Twitter) but from everyday, ordinary people who share similar interests to you. Keen photographer? Follow a few "circles" of photographers, and in no time you will have a fantastic stream of new images in no time. Keen gamer? Writer? Into the outdoors? Tech? Science? You name it, there are millions of people out there with similar interests to yourself, sharing or creating interesting content in subject matters that you relate to.

It's a bit like comparing apples and oranges. Yes, they are both fruit ... both similar in many ways, yet different in others. The same holds true for both Facebook and G+.

I personally use both ... more G+ lately.

I have found that there is a great flow of interesting, stimulating and intelligent posts on Google+. Interactions seem to be more dynamic.

In closing, if you want to post your holiday/vacation photos etc perhaps stay with Facebook. If you want to open yourself up to new discoveries, interesting and dynamic people ... join in on Google Plus

In my opinion, Google+ will have no chance against Facebook if it remains just a social site with similarities to facebook, Google needs to realize it's selling point is it's integration factor. Many people have their homepages set to Facebook (for social reasons) or Google (A nice, simple, homepage), when I noticed Google+ users also see notifications on the Google homepage I was sold.

Mobile devices are pretty much the center of many people's lives currently and a lot of people are adopting Android for various reasons, Google can take advantage of this and prompt new Android adopters giving them an option to sign up for Google+ when they first activate the device. Integrating it into the device will also be a plus, no not an application, fully integrating it.

Got a high score on a game? "Post to wall" button
Looking at a picture you just took? "Share with friends" in the option menu.
Added a new person's number in your phonebook? If it's tied with their G+ account, send an automatic request.

See, when Google+ started, they started by copying Facebook, and then Facebook started taking revenge by copying Google+

For having just started, G+ already has some pretty cool features, particularly photo integration via Picasa, circles, and huddles. And yes, FB has come back roaring with its new innovations, but for the most part, they seem to be annoying everyone thoroughly. And in the back of my mind, I still somehow hope that Myspace gets it together and makes a comeback. That's where the REAL high school dropouts are, by the way. Not that that's a bad thing.

Google+ is getting better. May be even better than Facebook. It recently got to the 50 million mark in 88 days which Facebook took around 3 years. Even the latest feature of being able to download original full version of user uploaded photos is something uniq among all social networking sites..
http://www.skipser.com/p/2/p/download-original-full-size-version-of-shared-photos-from-google-plus-.html

I was with facebook earlier, but seems G+ is gaining ground.

Google Plus has 65 million users already. This is like 200% growth since it opened to the general public.
And the best: wannabe-gangsta tweeners can't join! So, I am leaving my Facebook profile just for receiving spam and to read comments written in bad English by High School dropouts (the only ones that will stay in Facebook...).
My serious, interesting and intelligent contacts already had profiles in Google Plus, and the last ones still missing, created profiles this week.
So, thanks Zucchini-berg. Go try to destroy the Internet freedom somewhere else. Internet will stay open and public, no company will own it... Get back to Harvard and try to get a degree this time, Zucchini-berg...

High school dropouts are the only ones that will stay on Facebook? Hmm, I think you live in a very small universe.

"Go try to destroy the Internet freedom somewhere else. Internet will stay open and public, no company will own it..." I agree with most of your post, except that line, which makes no sense. The fact is, if Google+ ends up dominating the social networking side of things, the Internet WILL be owned by a company, aka Google.

i would take a lot of time for me to completely shift to G+ as most of my friends r not a part of G+ yet due to its age restriction!!!!! so i use G+ but with so many new features also it is boring too due to lack of friendzone.. i still use and prefer FB rather than G+.. a negative side of G+
:P :D :) but i hope after an year or so G+ would be in extensive usage and will have thousands of apps!!!!

I have been a part of G+ for a month or two now. Deleted my facebook a week ago. Plus, the kiddies can't join. Epic win.

They will not let me sign up because I am under 18. Time to go back to FB.
