Bill Maher's New Rule For Cat People (VIDEO)

First Posted: 09/21/11 09:46 AM ET Updated: 11/21/11 05:12 AM ET

When Bill Maher lays down his "New Rules", they're usually about some important or controversial aspect of our government or society -- and this time is no different. This week, Maher's taking on the divide between cat people and dog people. The bottom line? It's about poop.

Check out this exclusive "Real Time" preview below wherein Maher shares his thoughts on one of comedy's oldest tropes, and boils his preference for dog people down to the bathroom habits of both pets. It's pretty important stuff, people.

"Real Time" airs Fridays at 10:00 EST on HBO.

A new rule from someone who has never had a cat. Who puts the litter box in the kitchen and who doesn't clean the litter box? Most cats don't like a smelly dirty litter box. Some dogs eat poop and then lick your face. Bill, stick with things you know.

yeah, but at least cat people don't let their animals poop on the street or on the beach and leave it there for you to step in!

The ones with outdoor cats do :P Then again, I know people who let their dog poop in a box in the kitchen...

Come to think of it, you're right! Many people have toy dogs who poop inside on special paper set out for them.

I love Bill Maher, but this rule ignores those of us who have cats who go outdoors to poop. When the cat goes outdoors, he/she buries it. When people bring their dogs here, I have to patrol the yard for giant piles of offal and then dispose of them before I step in it. Also, who keeps a litter box in the kitchen? I have an emergency box in an unused closet.

We had neighbors who let their two huge black labs poop in our yard all the time. We would constantly be cleaning it up, my husband would run over it with the lawn mower, he'd get so mad. One day he took a shovel and started flinging it back in their yard, and their car window was open, it went right inside. To this day he says that part was an accident, I don't believe him, another big pile he threw was stuck to the side of their house for months. They still let their dogs crap all over, but we get a chuckle everytime we tell that story.

Who keeps the litter box in the kitchen(gag)? I hate it when they let cats walk on the kitchen counter. My cat knows to stop at the kitchen door, off limits.

You wouldn't like our house, no litter box in the kitchen, but our three cats are always in there, we even feed the small one on the counter. If we didn't, the two fat ones would never let her eat. They're to big to jump up there, so it's safe for her......LOL, to each their own

You're correct, my love of cats end at the kitchen door. I'd only eat prepacked and drink out of can at your place.

Our litter box is right next to the toilet where it belongs. If we're home and hear the tell-tale sound of litter being scratched and kicked, we are scooping the poop within seconds after the deed. If we're not home, then nobody smells it anyway. The box is basically poopless most of the time.

I miss you Bill! I kept HBO way longer than I should have because of you. I wish other people had balls like you. Keep it real!

I love you Bill, but you don't know many cat people!! I have a dog and cats. not everyone keeps the litter box in the kitchen. They only smell if you don't clean them. it would also be cruel and unfair to expect domesticated animals to revert back to the wild!! Responsibility for them is ours, and part of that is to make sure they're spayed and neutered!!

I volunteered at the Humane Society, and I actually had a women give up her cat because it wouldn't use it's litter box when it was dirty. That's what she said, when it's dirty. I just stood there and stared at her, I wanted to smack her. I just said, I didn't like to use a bathroom if it was dirty either. I had to stop working in the shelter itself, and just did work for them at home, I felt like I might harm people when they would tell me why they were abandoning their animals.
12:39 PM on 10/02/2011
some people shouldn't have animals, and I cringe to think these same people may be raising children!! You have my admiration on the not smacking her part!!

Cats poop in a litter box and cover it up afterwards; dogs have "accidents" on the kitchen floor, on the rug in the living room, on the bed, whenever they want your attention... especially those little rat-sized dogs... and they watch as you clean it up.

Who would put a litter box in the kitchen, anyway?
08:33 AM on 09/23/2011
I hate those little rat dogs and the lunatics that own them. Chiuauas are one of the most aggressive breeds.
Love cats but, kitchen is off limits. Litter box in kitchen? Are they that clueless not to know the dust travels. gag!

Cats -- they don't bark, you don't have to walk them and they don't go for your crotch.

Dogs are for friendship and cats are for spoiling. Once you get that, you can get along with both of them.
