New Hustwit Documentary, 'Urbanized,' Focuses On Design Of Cities

'Helvetica' Director Takes On Cities In New Documentary

Gary Hustwit, the design-oriented documentary filmaker whose previous work includes 'Helvetica' and 'Objectified,' has released the trailer for his third offering, 'Urbanized.' The new documentary focuses on the design of cities and the many facets that are included in their complicated development. The feature-length film aims to illuminate the process by which decisions are made and cities are created, previously disconnected from the public realm of discussion.

'Urbanized' will reveal the process of urban planning through interviews with the "world’s foremost architects, planners, policymakers, builders, and thinkers." Over half of the world's population lives in an urban center and by the year 2050, that statistic will likely balloon to 75%. While this may be an impressive marker of the future of urban centers, the film asks the question: if urban areas are on the rise, why do we see so many cities in an increasingly downward spiral? 'Urbanized' seeks to decode the delicate formula that makes for a thriving urban environment. Watch the trailer below.
