Republicans Decrying 'Job Killing' Green Energy Agenda Have Sought Green Jobs For Their Own Districts

First Posted: 09/21/2011 10:03 pm Updated: 06/29/2012 2:54 pm

WASHINGTON -- The GOP-led House Oversight Committee may be accusing the White House of a "job killing" green energy agenda in a hearing Thursday -- but at least ten Republicans on the panel have signed letters seeking to land green energy jobs in their districts.

In dozens of letters obtained by The Huffington Post, the lawmakers, led by Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), argue convincingly about Department of Energy funding going to their favored projects, often touting the job-creating potential of numerous endeavors.

The issue erupted earlier this month when reports broke that the bankrupt solar manufacturer Solyndra, which got $535 million in loan guarantees from the stimulus bill, was raided by the FBI.

Although the guaranteed loan project began under the Bush administration, many Republicans were quick to hammer the deal as evidence of "cronyism" -- and proof that Obama's key green jobs effort was a huge bust.

As it turns out, many of the committee members set to grill Obama administration officials Thursday were plenty eager to help constituents cash in on the efforts.

Fred Hill, a spokesman for Issa, said the fact that lawmakers sought approval of their own projects misses the point.

"The Obama administration appears confused about the nature of the controversy," he said in a statement.

"The issue isn’t that members of Congress from both parties have signed letters supporting some green projects, it’s that roughly $90 billion set aside for efforts handpicked by the administration haven’t had a meaningful impact on lowering unemployment and that some companies -- like Solyndra -- appear to have received special treatment," he said, referring to the overall amount the president's Council of Economic Advisers put toward the green push.

Issa's letters seeking projects in his sunny California district were first reported by Bloomberg after he was especially critical of Obama's efforts.

But other harsh critics seeking funding are Reps. Dan Burton (R-Ind.), Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) and Raul Labrador (R-Idaho).

Burton, the second-ranking Republican on the committee, slammed the Obama effort on Fox News, saying the Solyndra mess looks just like part of a Democratic pattern, and arguing that "it smacks of real corruption."

But he signed seven letters seeking green projects -- often with the rest of the Indiana delegation -- including for Abound Solar, which, like Solyndra, is aiming to manufacture solar panels.

"Abound Solar plans to create almost a thousand full-time jobs that the company and state officials estimate will generate several hundred million dollars in revenue," Burton and other Hoosier-state lawmakers wrote, employing similar language as the White House to justifiy such projects.

Abound secured a $400 million guaranteed loan from the same program as Solyndra.

Chaffetz took to Fox News to complain the whole program could be corrupt. He went to bat advocating for geothermal research and the Intermountain West Geothermal Consortium, arguing along with others that, "if we truly want to meet the president's challenge to bring more renewable energy online, to stimulate industry and create jobs, and bolster our education and research intrastructure, then this is the type of group that can do so and do so quickly."

Labrador sought a resolution back in May ending all such energy subsidies, grants and loans. But just two weeks later, he signed a letter with three other Republicans asking the Department of Energy's loan program to speed up a loan approved for the Idaho-based U.S. Geothermal.

Other members of the committee who sought green energy projects include, Reps. Connie Mack (R-Fla.), Tret Gowdy (R-S.C.), Patrick McHenry (R-S.C.), Blake Farenthold (R-Texas), John Mica (R-Fla.) and Todd Platts (R-Pa.).

Update: 10:30 p.m.
Democrats on the committee were unable to comment immediately Wednesday night, but a committee staffer found the revelations stunning.

“The Republicans actually don’t seem to understand their hypocrisy," the committee aide said. "They trash the entire clean energy program after writing glowing letters to commend it. The truth is the program works, which is why they want the money for their districts.”

Correction: Because of a transcript error, an earlier version of this story attributed a quote to Rep. Dan Burton that was actually said by someone else in a television discussion. Mr. Burton's quote has been corrected.

Gee, for some cockeyed reason the Chinese are investigating billions into green energy, and most civilized countries are also leaning in that direction, but hey, let's allow all of them to surpass us in every way, not just in health care stats and costs, manufacturing, etc. Let's blow it across the board.

Speaking out of both sides of their mouths is a pre-requisit for membership in the Republican Party. Everything is bad that they haven't thought of first, but they are first in line to benefit from whatever they can. In fact, even if they have thought of something first, or at least agreed to it in the past, that doesn't stop them from loudly condemning it when it seems politically pragmatic to do so. GOP = Group Of Prevaricators;-)

Yeah, who woulda thunk it? After the admirably manly and principled way in which governors have been refusing federal funds on behalf of their sick and hungry constituents, how could we have suspected they were taking the money after all, behind their backs, with their other hand?

Burton is a diabolical boob. I put solar on my house 5 years ago and my YEARLY Power bill is about $250 on the average. In Spring I usually make MORE power than I use so I get a $40 credit most of the time, EACH month. And then summer in the desert forces me to use A/C and I have to pay about $40-60/month for 24/7 A/C. I used to pay $160 / month or more each month when I did not have solar. I recommend going green to ALL of my friends.

I live in Idaho which is ironically, the greenest state in the US (largely because the many, many dams we have here were built long before our state became so red that it's practically communist. We used to be a bastion of liberalism. We were the second state to allow women to vote, for example. In the 70s, we had a governor who was famous for officially pardoning AWOL soldiers on the run from Vietnam. Anyway, as a result of living in such a green state we can have AC 24/7 and it doesn't cost that much and we didn't even have to invest in solar panels to get such a great deal. I wouldn't mind investing in solar but given that Idaho is a right-to-work state, all the jobs are minimum wage and I simply can't afford it.

This is why I am no longer going to vote for Republicans. Behind the scenes they are WANTING Green Jobs for their districts but when they vote, it's against Obama no matter what, even when they WANT what Obama is offering. Talk about shooting oneself in the foot .. the Pubbies are shooting themselves in the chest ... smack dad in the heart no less. At least this lowers the time I have figured for the Death of the Republican Party. But who will replace them? Maybe the Constitution Party and Chuck Baldwin as President. Such a beautiful thought ... must ruminate on that one for a bit .... ahhhh. OK, back to reality. How much longer do we have to coddle these self-destructive suicidal terrorists and traitors in our own Congress. For abandoning the President and causing direct harm to the United States why is it impossible to bring them ALL up on charges and incarcerate them for 20+ years? It would be nice to do the same to the fools who voted the Pubbies into office but I guess we figure that everyone is entitled to make poor voting judgments. Could indite the Pubby voters for being accomplices to treason? Please?

We could exile them all to Somalia where they'll be extra-happy because their tax rate will drop to zero and they won't need to pay membership fees to the NRA because there is no government there to tell them they can't have their jeep fitted with a rocket launcher.

Too many people haven’t realized that this whole political economic disaster was a planned tactic by fossil fuels, big pharma, bankers and insurance companies.
1. Use ALEC to brain wash hundreds of young republicans.
2. Create and fund Tea Party to get them elected by promising change.
3. Lock congress and hold the economy hostage until the president is forced to relent on his promised program of changes to end unfair practices of fossil fuels, big pharma, bankers and insurance companies.
4. Use grid lock to scare market causing investor freeze and prolonging recession.
5. Run weak and easily controllable candidates for president.
6. Clog the airwaves with commercials telling people that fossil fuels, big pharma, bankers and insurance companies are American’s best friends and care about the future.
7. CONTINUE; until national health care and green energy are dead.
The problem with this plan is that these people cannot control China, who will soon lead the world in green technology, they already have national health care and a better educational system than we do. They can’t win, but we will lose if we don’t fight this insidious plan.

FYI, when I emailed Diane Feinstein over the bailout she told me that they were having problems with the "London Loophole". The Family who practically OWNS the London Financial District is the Rothschilds. Could it be that the Rothschilds CAUSED the World Depression in order to buy up the weaker banks for pennies on the dollar? Seems they have already done that in Europe. I heard that CitiCorp was sold but can't find out to whom. Anyone out there able to help me with this? Did CC actually sell? If so, to whom?
I think you hit the nail on the head Sylvia. Nice work! One note on China! MOST Americans are finding out that the Chinese are sending us JUNK! I bought a Chinese Vice and it broke in half after a couple of months. I bought an American brand to replace it and years later it has been trouble free. My solar panel installer came by to check my inverter and when I asked why he said I did not have to worry because mine is American made. The Chinese inverters are exploding apparently. My Chinese bench saw from Sears, made in China, crapped out in 6 months, so I bought a Ryobi from HD and 6 years later it works flawlessly. Chinese technology is WAY behind ours. Their refineries are time bombs since they have no safety devices. As we bring jobs home, and start buying AMERICAN, we can watch as China fails in the World markets.
04:52 PM on 09/23/2011
The Rothschilds again! You'd think by now, with all the accusations that they or others in "The Cabal," control the world, that they would have gotten things under better control just in their own interests.

Only if we bring jobs home. Otherwise we'll just watch as all manufacturing becomes crap manufacturing and nothing will be worth buying anymore. And that is a problem that cannot be fixed with more demand because if nobody demands crap and all firms build nothing but crap then firms won't be building anything that is demanded by any actual customers.

Why is this hard to understand?

Any thinking person will oppose these green jobs, but if the government is hellbent on wasting the money then obviously he should work to get his constituents a cut.

It's just like social security. I think it is obviously an ignorant program, but since I paid in, I want my fair share. That being said, I still support candidates who want to completely eliminate social security (I don't want my children burdened by the lunacy).

"Any thinking person would oppose green jobs." Hahahahhaha
"I still support candidates who want to completely eliminate social security" Hahhahahhaha

In the 70+ years of it's existence, Social Security has never been late on a check. Why do you and the candidates you support hate successful programs? Riiight, because it makes federal government look good when your whole plan is to make it look bad. The green jobs comment is fantastic though, really. You want China to takeover, don't you? Are you a Chinese oil tycoon or something?

"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H. L. Hunt (you possibly know his background), a few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid."- IKE (Republican)

Not only "The Party of No" --- they are "The Party of Hypocrites" as well.

I seriously do not know how any Republican who is serious - really listening to what their own party is advocating and what they say out of both sides of their mouths....can feel any sense of confidence at all or believability in their candidates/advocates.

The Party of No simply makes it up as they go along...business as usual.
