Ricky's Sells, Pulls Anna Rexia Halloween Costume (PHOTO)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 09/21/2011 1:16 pm Updated: 11/21/2011 4:12 am

Ricky's, that ubiquitous New York City purveyor of neon wigs, graphic tees and high-end hair products, has a full line of Halloween costumes for next month's holiday.

Shop for costumes at Ricky's and you can go as Sexy Marilyn Monroe, a Sexy Indian Princess, Sexy Alice in Wonderland or even Sexy SWAT Team Member (women, don't you love your options?)

Unfortunately, you can no longer dress up as Anna Rexia, the sexy body dysmorphia sufferer.

Today the Village Voice pointed out that Ricky was selling an Anna Rexia costume, which featured a "glitter screenprint" skeleton and may or may not have come with the measuring tape for your waist.

It was, paradoxically, cut for quite the busty Halloween goer, which sort of makes no sense (last we check, eating disorder victims aren't the curviest).

William Walters, coordinator at the National Eating Disorders Association, told the Voice that he's seen the costume before -- and he's not a fan. "It makes light of something really serious... It's hard for us to find it funny."

Unsurprisingly, the costume has now been pulled off Ricky's website. As of noon today, a Ricky's spokesperson told the Village Voice that "the store wasn't supposed to be selling the Anna Rexia costume anymore."

Follow the link now and all you'll find is a "The page you requested was not found, and we have a fine guess why" message.

Thank God for screen shots. Head to VillageVoice.com to read more.

Shades of the Fabulous Poodles!

Won't touch a bite of her dinner
She used to be my one and only
Now she's skinnier than Boney Maronie"

"Eating disorder victims aren't the curviest?"
You're as bad as the stores who sell this costume. I have an eating disorder, but you'd never know it by looking at me. Why? Because I'm curvy. I'm not an emaciated. But I'm slowly killing myself in a desperate attempt to be thin. There are thousands of other women and men like me. Don't write us off because we don't fit your preconceived notions. Please take that sentence out of your article.

But is dressing up as a pregnant nun still ok? Or how about the priest costume with the little boy dummy positioned near the crotch area?

What kind of shop sells a priest costume with a boy near the crotch? Not doubting they exist, but of the 5 or so pop up Halloween stores in my area, I've seen no such thing.
12:27 AM on 09/30/2011
Neither one of those things is a disease and if someone actually buys and wears a priest costume with a little boy dummy positioned near the crotch, then they are just as disgusting as the Anorexia costume...Might want to keep an eye on that "guy".

that girl doesn't look too Anna Rexia to me
They should have just changed the name of the outfit

"It makes light of something really serious... It's hard for us to find it funny."

As opposed to other typical costumes which only make light of death, murder, torture...

The manufacturer could have gotten rid of the measuring tape, called it "sexy skeleton" and avoided the whole kerfuffle.

everyone is missing the most important piece of this story..... who is that model??? DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
04:02 PM on 09/23/2011
So many things wrong with this... First to start, I don't understand the costume. Is it mocking eating disorders? It may all be in good fun, but there isn't anything funny about this. It should instead be helped. I can take a good joke, I can have a few good laughs, but this is just wrong and sickening!

I get that the costume is insensitive and yes, they should have pulled it, I guess. But I have a MUCH bigger problem with the sexy 6 year old costumes, which it appears are basically going to be most of my older daughter's Halloween costume options this year. I think THAT affects society much more than an Anorexia spoofing costume, that our daughters will be parading around in slut gear for Halloween. Oh wait, that's most clothing for preteens nowadays. Gotcha.

so from what i understand.... anorexia is not a disease, or an illness.. it is a condition in which origin is not clear, the cause has not been identified, with so many variables in the reasons why people have it, is treated with therapy and SELF-CONTROL and a desire to feel better and get help. has a 6% mortality rate and has only become common due to the number of famous and beloved individuals who have suffered from it many years ago. but we are grouping it with and comparing it to cancer, HIV, and AIDs?.. okay. my issue with some of these comments is the comparison of what HAS NOT been done and WILL NOT be done to this. Would people make a cancer or hiv costume.. apparently not. i haven't seen one have any of you? the topic has gone beyond the costume. the costume is not up there. i checked. this is now about people wanting their thoughts and feelings to matter, and the need to feel "justified" or "righteous" in forcing their views on everyone else.. THATS whats disgusting.

Anorexia is a mental illness. Perhaps that clarifies it?

I intend to live forever. So far, so good.

An illness is simply 'a state of ill health'. Whether it be self inflicted, mental illness, etc. Disease also has that similar catch-all definition. Anorexia nervosa is classified as a mental disorder. As far as it not being as severe as cancer or HIV? You have to take each case individually. I have seen people with cancer who look fabulous and people with anorexia who look close to death. Because they are.

I have actually seen costumes as far as cancer or HIV but that was at a party with a bunch of us med nerds and they made them to actually look like the virus or a malformed cell.

Addressing "this is now about people wanting their thoughts and feelings to matter, and the need to feel "justified" or "righteous" in forcing their views on everyone else", I believe that is what you just did also. If you want to post your opinion on a subject, that is what a comments section is for. If you don't, then don't. And this is just me, hopefully humbly, expressing my opinion.

I was going to go as a religious persecuted refugee...but it takes so long for the order to get through (apparently they work out of some sort of camp? summer camp maybe? i dunno) that I just decided to forgo it all together...

Im going as Bulli, of the famous Mia family

I was diagnosed with anorexia at the very end of last year and have been hospitalized 11 times because of it since then, but I think the costume is sorta funny. I would totally wear it to an adult party (because my friends all know what my year has been like) if not for the fact that I think it is too clingy and short and I would look like a whale in it.

don't they have fat costumes??how come that's acceptable??
08:50 PM on 09/22/2011
They do. But the problem would be if they "named" the costume something like "Ben Jeter"
12:14 PM on 09/23/2011
I think it's called "Bill Emmia"!

I do think the Anna costume is funny in a sick way and should be available in costume stores that cater to adults who'd be attending adult only parties. Fake warning label: "Should not actually be worn trick-or-treating or to Weight Watchers meetings." In the interest of full disclosure, a very close relative of mine had anorexia/bulimia and it was awful but she's healthy now--but if you can't laugh a little after the fact at something that was difficult and painful, then all you do is cry....
