They have been honored by Chicagoans for more than two decades, but the 1985 Super Bowl champions never received the White House welcome most teams get these days.

The 1985 Chicago Bears were slated to visit the White House following their victory over the New England Patriots, but the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger halted those plans, Comcast Sports Chicago's David Kaplan reports. Now, President Obama wants to make it up to the team.

Kaplan said the team will visit the White House on October 7.

In August, Bears fan Obama met with the Green Bay Packers to honor their Super Bowl victory.

"I'm just gonna come out and say it," Obama said at the time. "This hurts a little bit. This is a hard thing for a Bears fan to do. It doesn't hurt as much as the NFC championship game hurt, but it still hurts."

Now, Obama will have a change to meet the team "which is considered by many to be the greatest team in NFL history," Kaplan reports.

A full list of attendees has not been released.
