Dakota Fanning Ditches NYU Dorms, Refuses To Wear Sweatpants

First Posted: 09/23/11 12:49 PM ET   Updated: 11/23/11 05:12 AM ET

Dakota Fanning is just one of the thousands of freshmen to enter New York University this fall, but she's not dealing with tiny dorm rooms or dramatic roommates.

Instead, the 17-year-old has moved into a luxury two-bedroom condo at the corner of Lafayette and Spring Streets, reports the New York Post. By ditching dorm life for a doorman building, the actress gets to call John Mayer and Keith Richard's daughter Theodora her neighbors.

And just because she's headed to college, don't expect her take on a sloppy style.

At the Marc Jacob's fashion week party, the actress and face of Jacob's latest fragrance, "Oh, Lola!" told People magazine, "If you ever catch me in sweatpants in class, that's not good. I've tried not to dress like that."

While most NYU students shun sweatpants in favor of more fashionable attire as well, Fanning told the magazine she knew moving to East coast would mean adjusting her fashion choices to the weather. “I knew to bring a lot of coats, and my Hunter rain boots," she said.

Check out some other celebrity college experiences:

Emma Watson

With one of the most successful movie franchises in history ("Harry Potter") tucked away in her backpack, in the fall of 2009, Emma Watson headed to Ivy League Brown University. But two years later, in early 2011, she announced that she would be leaving academia to pursue her acting interests further. But always one to keep us guessing, in July 2011 she confirmed that she would, in fact, be returning to Brown in 2012 to complete her degree.

I wish more people would take the same stance on sweatpants as her.

I refuse to wear white socks. Is that newsworthy enough to make me a millionaire?

I hate sweats too they just look poor and sloppy, (not that anything is wrong with being poor) and I don't thin anyone is surprised she is living in a dorm.

Amazing, with everything else going to hell in a hand basket, this 17 year old child, wont wear sweatpants. Guess she wont have to learn to adjust to roomies in the college dorms either.
Does the condo come with a maid also?

Good thing not to get too used to them. Should you start to spread, you'll never see it coming - till you TRY to put on your jeans. Jeans won't ever lie to you.

I didn't read the story, but with an explosive headline like "Actress Refuses to Wear Sweatpants" I just had to click and chime in with a post just as useless.

Good for her on not wearing sweat pants. Wearing them arond the house when cleaning or whatever is one thing, but to wear them and sloppy shirts out in public??? NO WAY! There are very, and I mean very few people that can wear sweat pants and look "kinda" ok in them. Fat sloppy women are always wearing them, and men? they should be banned. Half of them don't wear underwear under them, and you can see their "junk" hanging every where. It just looks nasty. Beside, I agree with another person, that being so sloppy makes you look like you haven't taken a shower. JMO

Hunter Wellies make everything better! And they last forever!!!

With that being said, there are going to be days when sweats are the easiest to put on. I've successfully completed college twice now, and every single person that I've ever heard say they would never wear sweats to class ended up doing it. All nighters, study groups, practicums/internships, exams, papers, hangovers....college is a crazy rollercoaster and trying to be fashionable 24/7 is just not worth the hassle.

I didn't know John Mayer and Keith Richards had a daughter! Who knew, huh? Oh come on, you know it was funny. Some proof-reading would have prevented it. ;-P

Good one and you beat me beat me to it. Sadly proof reading is now done by the computer itself and it did not see anything wrong as a human would have.

I guess that someone is full of herself...I doubt that she wouldh ave fit in anyway since she thinks she is too good for dorm life. Too bad as she is missing out on the growing up phase that takes place that first year away from home in college. Learning to coexist with others is a big part of growing up.

agreed. I read the line three times to make sure I wasn't losing my ability to coherently speak the English language. Yikes.

My first year of college, we were required to live on campus AND have a roommate, who was randomly assigned by the College. I think it was one of the best experiences of college life. We learned how to get along, to compromise, and to see how annoying our worst habits were to others as we were seeing them in our roommates. She's definately losing out.

I agree. There is nothing worse than seeing a woman (or man) wearing sweatpants out in public. It's tacky, lazy and looks like they just rolled out of bed and too lazy to take care of them selves. Lake of self-pride. They are ok around the house but in public--------------------------NO WAY ! ! !
