Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran President, Open To 'Hotline' With U.S.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Hot Line

By ANNE GEARAN   09/23/11 06:34 PM ET   AP

NEW YORK -- Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says he would welcome a "hotline" with the United States or any other way to head off conflict in the Persian Gulf.

He told a news conference Friday that there was no reason for any clashes and "any tool that can prevent clashes or potential conflict, we welcome that tool."

Ahmadinejad said "some will pretend that energy security is at risk," but if NATO, British and U.S. forces leave the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, Iran will "guarantee" shipping routes and security for oil and other energy supplies.

"I don't think there is a need for any confrontation or potential clashes, but I think the long-term solution is for the foreign forces to leave the Persian Gulf," Ahmadinejad said. "There is no need in the Persian Gulf for the presence of the NATO force. Nations of the region are fully capable of establishing and providing their own security."

There is no formal proposal for such a hotline, but several U.S. military officials have mused publicly about establishing an emergency contact system to prevent misunderstandings between U.S. Navy ships and planes and an increasingly assertive Iranian military.

There have been several close calls over the past year between small, fast Iranian boats that have appeared to charge or harass U.S. vessels, and Iranian planes that zip too close to U.S. ships and planes.

Military officials say some of the Iranian ships are behaving more aggressively than the largely professional Iranian Navy, and U.S. officials suspect that many belong to the unpredictable Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Both nations claim patrol rights in the Persian Gulf.

The hotline, modeled on the old emergency contact line between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, would let a U.S. commander quickly call a senior Iranian military official for clarification of Iranian motives, or to complain.

Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a university audience last week that he is concerned by the lack of communication between the U.S. and Iranian militaries – a breach that dates to the severing of diplomatic ties three decades ago.

"Even in the darkest days of the Cold War, U.S. officials could still talk with the Soviets," Mullen said at the University of Miami.

"Both nations claim patrol rights in the Persian Gulf."

Hey I had never even thought about that. Who or what gives the right to any nation to claim patrol rights in the Persian Gulf? Are there international waters in the Persian Gulf? Any historians in the house?

now this is one thing Iran said that i can get behind. communication is the best way to prevent conflict. i wouldn't mind both ends being recorded so that everyone can hear what was said without needing a person to edit what they want us to hear

Iran has absolutly no right to have nuclear warheads. They have pruven unresponsable and to hateful, especally to their own people

Know your facts before you write an ignorant comment. Iran does not have any nuclear war- heads nor is there any evidence of such. Even if you don't believe the IAEA, hopefully you believe in the report by 16 U.S. intelligence agencies. Once again the NIE Report regarding Iran's nuclear program asserted that there is no evidence that Iran has a nuclear weaponization program. As for proving irresponsible please answer these questions?

1. Who is a signatory to the NPT? Iran, US, or Israel
2. Which countries have abrogated their rights as signatory to the NPT? Iran, US, or Israel
3. Which countries have threatened to obliterate another nation with nuclear weapons? Iran, US or Israel
4. Which countries have asked for a nuclear free zone in the Middle East? Iran, US or Israel
5. Which countries have refused to accept a nuclear free zone in the ME? Iran, US or Israel
6. Which country has used nuclear weapons in the history of mankind? Iran, US or Israel
7. Which country has not invaded any country for the past 300 years? Iran, US or Israel
8. Which country has not occupied any other country? Iran, US or Israel
9. Which country has clandestinely developed nuclear weapons? Iran, US or Israel
10. Which nuclear weapon state is the biggest violator of the NPT? Iran, US or Israel

Once you answer these questions we will go to the next set.

Why would anyone who has billions and billions in backing do anything you just mentioned? Even yourself would fall flat in the eyes of the people you lead because of the necessity. In reality, they are all guilty. "We" are all guilty.

Preserve and protect the wealth and population. Dismantling (entire stockpiles) (of) weapons is not an option, Iran has most defiantly a small stock pile of nukes whether you like to understand that or not is completely up to you. The fact that they have nuclear research building(s) buried under ground is also questionable.

I do agree with Israel and your questions though, but they are a small state which has been threatened by everyone on their borders. Aside from biblical text and the Jews creating Jerusalem and many other areas of interest that are now protected by the Jews what else would you come to expect from such a small "nation?"

The protection of vital interests; with protection comes nukes.
Inevitability: Impossible to avoid or prevent. Your questions essentially fall on deaf ears. Cause there is a need for protection.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is an antagonist.

Iran has the right to have nuclear weapons to defend itself against its nuclear enemies threatening it.

Which rational world are we speaking about? The nuclear armed states?

This post makes me want to ask all of you a question. Should the U.S resume "isolationism:" reduce the size of its military to just large enough to ensure homeland security? Or should we continue with our proactive approach and continue interfering with the rest of the world in order to maintain our dominant position? No answers are unwelcome, im just curious as to what people think.

We're at the point where we need to be able to handle a large regional conflict of ground forces, but most of our real power is naval and air, able to reach virtually anywhere at any time. But certainly we do not need to be all over the world the way we are, and we should not be in the business of building nations out of what colonial powers left behind.

The former because our national security depends on it. We needn't be "isolationists" but we must substantially reduce our military and global commitments if we are to not to become a failed state.
