Rick Perry 2012: Texas Governor Works To Show He's Strongest GOP Contender

(AP) ORLANDO, Fla. -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry worked to convince Florida Republicans Saturday that he is the strongest contender for the GOP nomination despite a shaky debate performance earlier this week that has sparked jitters about his bid.

Perry lost a key test vote in Florida to businessman Herman Cain on Saturday after making a strong effort to win. Perry's second-place finish in the straw poll came just days after he faltered in a debate in Orlando, Fla.

Perry's recent troubles have sparked another round of angst among Republicans about their slate of presidential candidates.

In an interview with the Associated Press Saturday after he had left Florida for a lunchtime speech in Michigan, Perry addressed speculation that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie might reconsider running for president in 2012.

"I see anybody that gets in the race that believes in America and is a small government but efficient government individual, I would welcome into the race. It just strengthens the point that the Republican Party's all about getting our country working again. Whoever that is," Perry said of Christie. "And I'm also a big believer in these governors being freed up to be able to compete against each other. Chris Christie is a great competitor - and I'll be up there, you know, in Jersey, looking for some businesses to move to Texas."

Christie insisted just this Thursday that he does not plan to run for president in 2012. Bill Palatucci, Christie's longtime friend and political adviser, told the AP on Saturday night, "Nothing has changed."

But the more intense discussions of a Christie candidacy are further evidence that Perry's bid could be in trouble.

Activists at the Florida test vote kept bringing Christie up as a possible contender. Merick Lewin, who owns a marketing company in Davie, Fla., said he believes it's a two-person race - unless Christie runs.

"He's tough. He's strong. He could really shake this up, especially if Rick Perry implodes," Lewin said.

Perry, a late entrant into the Republican primary who quickly led national polls, stumbled in recent weeks.

His defense of in-state tuition rates for illegal immigrants put him on the wrong side of the GOP's conservative base. His rivals worked to exploit his opposition to a fence along the U.S.-Mexican border and his support of a mandatory vaccine for girls against a sexually transmitted disease.

Perry left Florida to speak to GOP activists at a gathering on Mackinac Island in Michigan. Romney, the son of a former Michigan governor, also was attending that event.

Cain captured 37.1 percent of the vote at Saturday's Presidency 5 straw poll in Orlando, with Perry coming in second with 15.4 percent. Mitt Romney came in third with14 percent and former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania followed with 10.88 percent.

While all declared candidates were on the ballot, the first-tier candidates did not compete. Perry bought hundreds of activists' breakfasts on the sidelines before heading to Michigan. Romney skipped and didn't send representatives to the forum. Romney and U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota both left Florida before the voting began and their campaigns discounted the straw poll's role in the campaign. Bachmann finished eighth with 1.51 percent in the straw poll.

The results were unlikely to shuffle the campaign's standings. Instead, they were mostly a popularity contest among the delegates selected by local party organizations.

Ahead of the test vote, Perry's campaign bought breakfast for hundreds of the party faithful assembled for a three-day conference and debate. Perry said skipping the straw poll was a blunder.

"I think that's a big mistake. I think it's very important," Perry said, citing its history.

Previous straw polls have predicted the GOP nominee.

Ronald Reagan won in 1979, George H.W. Bush in 1987 and Kansas Sen. Bob Dole in 1995. The Republican Party of Florida, however, has not organized the test vote in recent years.

After the vote, Perry released a statement congratulating Cain. His spokesman, Mark Miner, acknowledged his debate performance played a role in the straw poll vote, but insisted the campaign would not change strategy.

"He's the commander in chief, not the debater in chief," Miner said.

Cain's speech Saturday energized the attending activists. "Let's send Washington a message: We the people are still in charge of this country. Not we, the bureaucrats. Not we, the government," Cain told the conference.

Santorum said delegates should stand with "someone who can win the election, someone who is a consistent, authentic conservative ... who has proved they can win in states that we have to win."

Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich said he was the one who could best take on Obama.

I think the mainstream media are still flummoxed as to who's the least electable, legitimate, Republican candidate; however, it'll be obvious the moment that they've decided, because that guy will emerge as the one receiving all of the favorable press.  The media know that it's gonna be a Herculean task getting The Bolshevik-In-Chief reelected; be prepared to be dazzled by the greatest, most  Read More...

When one drop out and another drops in only means that the republicans has no clue to what is going on and how to win. That is their goal to beat this president no matter what the cause. They feel that the election in November is their key to the white house. But what they don't understand is that they won on people emotions of having a black president.

If they had encourage people to work with the president instead of coming out on election night and saying that they was not going to work with him no matter how good it would be for the country. What they really wanted to say is how could the american people go against generations and generations of beliefs that the white house belongs only to the white race and especially not blacks. To them it is like taking orders from a black man and that just doesn't sit well with a lot of them. This same attitude happens in the everyday workplace too, that is why there are so few blacks in high places.

But they will have years to get use to the idea of having a black president because he will be relelected and when he finish there will be another democrat. Who knows maybe another first in the making.

Perry is scary.

When he told other Republicans that if they did not agree with the Texas plan to help immigrant children get college educations that they had "no heart," he committed an error. Republicans PRIDE themselves on having no heart. That is a BADGE OF HONOR. "Heart" is for those liberal, thumb-sucking Democrats. Why would a guy who loves guns and wants others to love them, too, be worried about having a heart? Dick Cheney built his whole career on being heartless. What was Perry thinking about when he came out with that stuff? It was almost anti-Republican!
08:29 PM on 09/28/2011
wow - and The Democratic Party is showing real heart - with their $787 BILLION BOGUS STimulus legislation - abusing our US taxpayer money - to stimulate the economy and create Jobs in FOREIGN countries - along w Obamacare - that no one is allowed to view prior to being bum-rushed for a vote by Pelosi and Reid.

Do you think that BECAUSE the democratic party showed their heart,

the midterm elections became a landslide victory for REPUBLICANS - acquiring SEVEN HUNDRED-TWENTY-TWO (722) seats - across the nation - in state and federal government?

One can only hope the "shaky ground" will open up and swollow this good old boy. The last thing this country needs is a Bildergerg candidate. This secretive group has only their bank accounts in mind. Obama was the last candidate they invited to their uber secret get together. Tell ya anything?????

And you "know" this how? This group is more secretive than anything on the planet...and alarming, at that

What is wrong with an HONORABLE country that

· HONORS its military families and TAKES CARE OF THEM - it is sad that our first lady has to do commercials begging people to donate $$$ to help our vets. OUR TAXES should do this.

· HONORS its female citizens right to choose

· HONORS all of its citizens right to pursuit of happiness ( one of those pursuits is the ability to get MARRIED to the person of choice)

· HONORS the working “man” and protects “his” rights, pays a LIVEABLE wage and provides quality benefits

· HONORS it’s seniors and makes sure that in their old age they are taken care of through SS and MEDICARE or some other form of quality assurance

· HONORS all of its citizens enough to INSURE affordable , quality health care for all of its citizens

· HONORS all religions EQUALIY

· HONORS the planet

· HONORS other nation’s right to run their own countries the way they want to (even if “we” don’t agree) As much as it is NOT GOOD, the Palestinian’s had the right to vote in HAMMAS to their government. If they want to live under a terrorist organization it is their right to.

@ Dancenownzen:

"· HONORS its military families and TAKES CARE OF THEM - it is sad that our first lady has to do commercials begging people to donate $$$ to help our vets. OUR TAXES should do this."

*****

It is even more pathetic that FLOTUS wants to have a commercial with her wig hats - to ask Americans to donate to support the US military and their families -

when the MONEY - for the costs of the commerical and airtime - could have been spent on the military families!!!!!!

But how else could FLOTUS devise for another photo-op - w the US taxpayer footing the expenses = costs of commerical and airtime!

WE heard Michelle Obama's Election Propoganda already for the 2008 presidential campaign - when she (falsely) portrayed that her first order of business - if Barack is elected - would be the military families -
but yet when elected - no one at the WH responded to the calls from military families who were being forclosed upon - Against the LAW - while their family members were on active-duty.

The Obamas are an absolute disgrace - and use their Election Propoganda - to "pretend" to be helping military families - to get votes from the US military.

Absolutely SINFUL!

The fact that ANYONE in this country finds ANYTHING worthy in ANY of the REPUBLICAN "candidates" clearly shows that THIS COUNTRY is so so so so NOT ready to enter the 21st century......even though we are already in the 11th year of it.

America ( the RIGHT WING) is doing everything in it's backward little mind to drag this country BACKWARD to the 18th century.

The fact that most Americans don't own a passport, speak only English and have not traveled more that 500 miles away from their place of birth shows the true "unWORLDLY" view these people have. CLUELESS as to what is happening in the "real World", they long for the days of yesteryear - and THIS will be the DOOM of the UNITED STATES and the calandar flips through this century,

It seems the TEA PARTY has a vision of "taking America backWARD" - and that will never happen ( whether it was a better time in history or not) THIS is what I mean by the real world. The TEA PARTY seems unwilling to face the fact that this is the 21st centuray and it is better to join the "real world" than trying to drag the country backwards.

The Radical Islamic's wnat to drag their society back too - all the way to BC.

I am not a Tea Party attendee - but I REALLY like their verve! I am in agreement with what they are doing in STANDING UP for AMERICA!

It is time that the liberals and radicals who hi-jacked the democratic party - have competition - especially when the purpose of liberals is for domination.

That is why Liberals and Radicals as Democrats - involve themselves with the mission of Radical Islam - "to fundamentally change The United States of America".
