WATCH: President Obama Addresses Questions From Latino Voters (VIDEO)

Latinos Obama

First Posted: 09/28/11 11:59 AM ET Updated: 11/26/11 05:12 AM ET

In attempts to connect with Latino voters, President Barack Obama sat down with Latino news outlets including HuffPost LatinoVoices for a roundtable interview on Wednesday morning. With recent polls indicating his decreasing approval ratings amongst Latinos, Obama fielded questions on topics such as immigration reform, Mexico’s drug cartel violence, and Puerto Rico’s independence.

When asked by LatinoVoices Senior Editor Gabriel Lerner about Sheriff Arpaio’s approach to immigration enforcement in Maricopa County, Obama said he wouldn’t speak specifically about the case. He did, however, condemn Arizona’s approach to immigration reform, citing the immigration bill SB1070. Arizona’s treatment of immigration, he said, “has not always been productive."

Obama also said that he favors a “comprehensive approach” to immigration reform, which includes a prioritization of criminals in deportation proceedings over non-criminals and students. He emphasized that in order to change laws he needs the support of Republicans in congress -- something which he said he is not currently receiving.

"This notion that somehow I can just change the laws unilaterally is just not true,” President Obama said.

Obama cited Republicans like George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan for their leadership on immigration reform, and said that America must “push Republicans back to where they were a few years ago."

When asked a question regarding Puerto Rican independence, Obama said that this was a question to be answered by the Puerto Rican people before congress acts.

“I think that the key here is that the status of Puerto Rico should be decided by the residents of Puerto Rico,” he said. He added that if there was strong consensus amongst the Puerto Rican people, Congress would likely take that to heart in their decision.

In regards to a question about Mexico’s drug-related violence, Obama said the United States had to be a more effective partner in both reducing the demand for drugs in the United States and stopping the flow of weapons and cash to Mexico.

In response to a question from HuffPost LatinoVoices during the roundtable, Obama said he was ‘absolutely certain’ there would be a Latino candidate for President during his lifetime.

“Just look at the demographics,” he said. “With numbers comes political power,” he added.

Question: The cost of living is going up. When are you doing to give us a stimulus on our social security checks?

Obama says, that are a million young people are being covered through their parents insurance. By 2013, we are going to be having exchanges where everyone that doesn't have health insurance will have access to the insurance that members of congress get, if they can't afford it, then there will be subsidies. The rates of diabetes are way too high. Preventive care will reduce our costs of health care, Obama says

My hope is that in 2012 and 2016, we see the participation rate go up. if you are voting at a low rate, then you are giving up some of your power, Obama says. The political system responds to seniors than young people, because they vote at higher rates. The same is true for Latinos.

Obama says, there is a program called 'Race To The Top' that will give extra money to provide teachers with extra training. We are giving 4 billion dollars to the worst performing schools.

Even if you aren't going to a four-year college, you need advanced training. Even to work in a factory, you need to be able to communicate effectively and learn math. Telling our children to turn off the television and focus on school is where we need to focus our attention.

There isn't a quick fixer. This is a 10-20 year project, Obama says.

From Elise Foley:

Obama said he thinks the courts will decide "very soon" whether to end the Defense of Marriage Act, which prevents gay and lesbian men and women from petitioning for legal status for their foreign born partners.

"I can't comment on where the case will go, I can only comment on what I believe," he said, adding that he believes the law is unconstitutional.

He said he supports ending DOMA through Congress, but thinks the likelihood of passing such a repeal is unlikely.

"Truthfully, the recourse through the courts is probably going to be the best approach," Obama said.

But he did not say straight out that there are few options for gay couples to petition for legal status, or refer to the new deportation policy that could close deportation cases based on LGBT relationships. That policy change, if it is carried out effectively, is the most likely reprieve for binational couples facing deportation.

We had a conference about bullying... to prevent this kind of bullying from taking place."

Question: In the long run, how do we create an economy that is more competitive?

Obama: "We have created more than 18 million jobs but the problem is that we have lost so many between 2007-08... We are still going to have to build up our infrastructure. Sustained effort can put a lot of people back into work. There isn't going to be a single silver bullet. We have to emphasize exports. There's a comatose patient lying in a hospital bed. His condition is deadly if left untreated. There are three possible alternatives: a surgery which no doctor has yet agreed to perform, a series of medications will which keep the patient alive but comatose, and an experimental, some would say radical treatment.

The patient has twelve relatives. One wants the experimental treatment. Five want the surgery, five want the medications and the twelfth goes back and forth between the two, unable to make up his mind. The doctor comes in and says: "Well, since you people can't seem to agree on a course of action, I guess the patient's staying comatose until he dies".

---

That, in a metaphorical nutshell, is President Obama's position on Puerto Rico's status.

Oh please. If we were a nation of respected laws, President Clinton would have been found guilty of perjury, possibly impeached,
Only certain people consider Pres Bushs' reactions after 9/11 to have been unjustified.
American could be sitting in ruins, dust and destruction and you all would still be complaining.
First, Pres Bush didn't do enough. Then, he did too much.

Remember, everything is a fight for the poor and for those without a voice and the Latinos have no voice when they are illegal. Do not blame the President for a law that was already enacted. We need our voices heard and we can do that by voting!!!!!

It didn't take long after the 2008 Presidential election for conservative's true feelings to come to the fore. It started with Rush Limbaugh's opening salvo of "I hope he fails."

Tom Delay, when asked if he agreed with Rush, answered "Well, exactly right. I don’t want this for our nation. That’s for sure."

Shortly after Obama's stimulus program started David Vitter took aim at it by saying "Our next goal is to make President Obama and liberal Democrats in Congress own it completely".

So, instead of coming up with serious measures to save the economy, the party instead opted to devote its time to a "we told you so" agenda that included GOP-only hearings to highlight the bill's purportedly wasteful elements and shortcomings.

Most conservatives, when asked about Rush's comment, usually deny that they actually want Obama to fail as President, preferring to spin it by saying that they just want his policies to fail.

Can you imagine the uproar in 2003, as Bush was sending troops to Iraq, if prominent liberals had said that they wanted everything he was doing to fail? That they wanted the war in Iraq to fail? That they did not want the President's national security agenda to succeed? We all remember how anyone who simply disagreed with the reasons we invaded Iraq was labeled as "unpatriotic" and "anti-American". If you disagreed with Bush about anything, or for any reason then you "hated" America & wanted our country to fail.

Cont.

But the minute anyone challenges conservatives by saying that if they do not want to see Obama or his policies succeed then they are against America & want our country to fail, they start in with the vehement denials.

In October of 2010 Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell made the startling statement that "The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.”

Seriosuly?!? With all of the problems America is facing right now, the single most important thing on Republican's minds is to make sure that Obama doesn't get re-elected?

Can someone please explain to me just exactly how a group of politicians who spent the majority of their time after Obama's inauguration, praying for him to fail, bleating "No" to anything Obama proposes & rooting for the economy to get worse, just to prove a point, is somehow going to "fix" anything?

Immigration is such an important issue to all Americans and it is a difficult subject to talk about. Too many people use it as an excuse to make insulting remarks about immigrants. Far to few take the opportunity to have a real conversation and find out how we can solve the problem. We are all on this one planet and we are all members of the human race. Surely we can find a way to share it.

I found this on HP not long ago so I can’t claim these are my words but I can say this is exactly how I feel.

To all voters, including Latinos, who may believe Rubio should be VP:

To my Republican/TP friends:

I've asked these two questions and have yet to get answers from you...Why should I vote Republican and what candidates are you considering voting for and why? Let me show you how easy this is.

I vote Democratic, because although both parties are nowhere close to perfect, the Republican’s have proven and demonstrated that their platform is hostile to:

-Women
-Gays
-Minorities
-The Middle Class
-Unions
-The Elderly
-Muslim Americans

They have demonstrated the last 3 years that they are FOR and fight hard publicly FOR:

-Corporate America
-The Top 2%
-Wall Street

I am voting for the President because contrary to the current narrative from the right he has gotten some things done:

-Healthcare
-New GI Bill
-Bin Laden and Gaddaffi
-Equal Pay for Women
-Renewed Respect and Confidence from World Leaders
-Saved the American Auto Industry to name a few.

Is he perfect? No. Have I disagreed with things he's done? Plenty. But I'm smart enough to see that Republican’s have not offered anything to help the country and that they've only done things to hurt the President in order to get back in the White House at the people's expense.

See how easy that was? Now it's your turn.

While one can work on more than one issue at a time, one can not work on ALL the issues at one time. No one can.

Immigration reform? Where have the Republicans been on immigration reform in the past? Look at Reagan and both Bushs immigration reform. Conservatives act like this is the first time we are aware of illegal immigrants in our country. Where is the GOP plan?

Deportations are up under Obama. Not Bush. Not Reagan. Not Clinton. Obama!

Reagan and both Bushs "immigration reform" was nothing more than Amnesty programs.

Reagan: amnesty for over 3 million illegal immigrants
Bush 1: amnesty for 2.6 million illegal immigrants
Bush 2: amnesty for 9-12 million illegal immigrants

Would you be happy with an Obama Amnesty program like his predecessors?

Obama has asked the Republicans to come together to discuss and to develop some proper immigration reform. The Republicans have refused to date. You see, if the Republicans even look like they may agree to giving those already here a means of staying to work towards citizenship they know their base will reject them. So they refuse to even discuss the matter. Republicans are famous for calling for a wall along the border but when asked specifically what they would do with the illegals already here the Republicans skirt the issue.

12:42 PM on 09/28/2011
Education is personal choice, schools and family can only help. US provides everyone free education till high school, and also 2 year community colleges have very reasonable fees. So I'm not sure what you mean by "how it's going to happen", it's already happening for kids who want to study and educate themselves and parents and schools help them get there. If you've a will there are ways to do 4 year college for as little as $10-$15K (2 years worth of credits thru CLEP, Community colleges, and remaining 2 from a state university)

You are so right. I am a college chemistry professor and we have to get back to the old school way of disciplining our kids at an early age. A lot of our kids are plain lazy and spend too much time on the computer doing non-educational activities and watching too much television. Their attention span and reading comprehension skills are not up to par. Therefore, their analytical and reasoning skills suffer: two important skills needed to be successful in a chemistry course.
