Piranhas Attack 100 Beach Goers In Brazil

Piranha

Remember that so-bad-it's-almost-good movie from last summer where crowds of scantily-clad spring breakers were viciously attacked by a swarm of piranhas at Lake Victoria?

Fiction quickly turned to a horrifying reality (though not nearly as horrifying as in "Piranha 3-D") for around 100 beach goers in Brazil last weekend, Breitbart reported.

The throngs of bathers were treated at a hospital in Jose De Freitas for bites on their heels and toes from piranhas at a local beach.

Since there is nothing to challenge their position in the food chain in the northeast Brazilian waters, local environmental official Romildo Mafra told UOL Noticias the flesh-eating fish have taken to preying on humans. So far, introducing 100,000 tilapia to the local food chain as an alternative is one solution environmentalists are testing.

According the article, the attacks have been going on for two months.

I heard its illegal to have piranha in southern USA. So we can have illegal immigrants but not the fish that would eat them? Something is wrong here.

Hey, you don't have to go to Brazil feed these guys, we have these suckers right here in S - FL waterways. Of course our inland fresh waters are so polluted and filled with other goodies like brain eating amoebas and some recent anaconda discoveries - that no one with any sense go in them.

Actually, long term exposure to chlorine has a higher potential danger than being attacked by a piranha - either in FL or the Amazon drainage basin.

I'm going to have to agree with some comedians on this one. You are swimming in its KITCHEN!!! How would you like it if the cake in your fridge fought back or lured you away from it with vegies? Honestly though they nibbled on there feet cause most brazillians are nothing but plastic anyway.

Those tilapia should help them raise whole new schools of cute (hungry) little baby piranhas. I wonder what they'll want to snack on when the tilapia are piranha pooh.

I loathe thongs so much that I feel compelled to remove them every time my wife wears one.

I'd like to put some in every RW howlers' bath tub - but so few of them bathe, it's hardly worth it.

I say give it a go. If it worked the fish would work for nothing. Great idea!
