T-Mobile's IPhone Plans: 'We Think The IPhone's Great But...'

NEW YORK (Reuters) - T-Mobile USA will not be selling the next version of Apple Inc's iPhone, a executive for the No. 4 U.S. mobile operator said Monday.

"We think the iPhone's great but we're not going to get it. Apple knows we'd like it,'' T-Mobile USA marketing executive Andrew Sherrard told Reuters in an interview. Asked why the operator will not be selling the popular smartphone, Sherrard referred the question to Apple.

According to the redoubtable AllThingsD, Apple is going to hold an event on October 4th. What are they going to announce at this event? The iPhone 5, DUH!

Actually, we have no idea if
A) There actually will be an event on October 4th, or
B) If there is an event, what they will announce. But if there IS an event on October 4th, you better believe it will be to announce a new iPhone (or iPhones). A popular rumor has two new iPhones coming out this fall: one, a $99 handset similar to the iPhone 4 (but called "iPhone 4s") and aimed at bargain hunters; as well as the big kahuna, the iPhone 5.

So, sure, the next-generation iPhones just might be announced on October 4th, which is pretty soon. So where are the leaked pictures of these things? Ask and ye shall receive...

It's crazy. It is like buying a TV an it doesn't work with Comcast. How did we let this happen? Why does it continue?

I think it would be a mistake for Apple to make a t-mo version now with the possibility of an ATT merger that would make all t-mo 3G phones unusable...

I'm not anti-Apple, but the story I heard on NPR is that they employ 1million (yes 1 million) people in China to make their iphones, ipods, ipads and whatever else they can start with an "i". the largest plant employs 300,000 workers and at least a dozen of them have committed suicide due to the constant pressure they are under to produce these items. There's no question that Apple produce outstanding products, my beef, especially with iTunes, is there almost paranoid control to everything that touches the use of their products. Just like Microsoft did, Apple squash the competition -- what has that cost the consumer in terms of access to technology? It's way too big brotherish for me, I've moved on to Amazon cloud player for my music, a droid for my phone and might consider the next incarnation of the iPad. Spread your dollars around folks, technology would be more widely available and easier to use if more companies were allowed to jump into the game!

I am no fan of apple or their products but nearly everything electronic you own is made in those same factories. The factory that produces apple products also produces products from other tech companies.

Knowing Apple, I doubt anything else gets made there, someone might leave a prototype in the cafeteria...

apple's shortcomings aside... all (or at least almost all) tech is assembled in China these days... and most call centers are based in India or Costa Rica... putting factory conditions aside, dont the Chinese deserve jobs as well??? the products are sold there you know...
01:00 PM on 09/27/2011
I think you're missing the point, it's not about jobs in China, Apple are the 900 pound gorilla in technology, my post was about their chronic need to control every aspect of their products, something which I think is detrimental to the development of technology.

The iPhone is so last year. Don't worry about it T-mobile, just roll out more and more Android based phones.

Anyone here have Sprint? I'm thinking of going to Sprint when the new iphone comes out.
10:41 AM on 09/27/2011
Why give it to everyone but Tmobile, Apple? That's strange.
09:55 AM on 09/27/2011
How much better can it be than the 4? you can make calls, download the same apps, etc... so whats the big hype about?

I'm just about ready to ditch this infernal blackberry. I'm sure when the new iphone goes on sale, I can get a good deal on the old model!
09:56 AM on 09/27/2011
That's if they don't plan on making the old model 80% obsolete. Not sure how they could accomplish that but for companies such as Apple I wouldn't be surprised if they did.

Check out any of the Android phones out there. Motorola has some very nice ones at the moment, and performance wise they run rings around the iPhone.

I have the Motorola Droid X, and it rocks. Not only that, it has an HDMI output, so you can hook it up to your flatscreen and watch streaming movies on it. Not 100% but pretty sure Iphone doesn't have HDMI output.

Sprint never got the iphone for a long time either, and watched their stock slide all the way to lower single digits. Now that they are getting it in October their stock has rallied.

I was in a store the other day and was very surprised to see that Verizon offers very little to entice people to sign up for their service.

Yup, and I think they have unlimited data as part of their regular plans. Crucial for a smartphone!
07:52 AM on 09/27/2011
but, there is more money to be made off other phones. Sorry fansheep, not everyone wants an iPhone.

Actually as I mentioned above I have the Motorola Droid X, and my mom has the latest Iphone and she hates it. It is heavier then the droid and does not offer half of the services (ie: a full driving navigation system etc) that comes native to the droid, and not the iphone. So not sure how you can call the droid phones clunky.

So much Apple hate... Its ridiculous.

The reviews from the tech press for the iPhone is overwhelmingly positive, they sell in record numbers and the iPhone is consistently number one in customer satisfaction surveys...

You don't have to like it... You don't have to buy it... But people aren't foolish for buying them and they aren't garbage.

They also employ many people stateside and give many more an income by developing for their incredibly lucrative app store...

Don't buy one that's fine... Your opinion is valid to you and that's fine but the hate is unnecessary.

The iphone is a nice phone but, many other are as well.T-Mobile would be better off putting the money it would cost to sell the iphone into expanded rural coverage.
