96-Year-Old Woman, Amada Rice Stevenson, Charged With Killing Nephew in St. Augustine, Fla

A 53-year-old man was allegedly killed when his 96-year-old aunt that he feared allegedly shot him with a .357 handgun.

Amanda Rice Stevenson, the suspected murderer, was wheelchair-bound in her appearance before a St. Augustine, Fla. court judge on Monday where she was arraigned for allegedly killing her nephew Johnny Rice, The St. Augustine Record .

Rice's wife found his body blocking the door to their bedroom on Saturday night. Police said he was shot in the chest while he lay in bed.

A neighbor and co-worker told The Record that he lived in fear of his aunt, but let her move in with him and his wife this year, because no one else would take her.

Dreading his aunt's potential to harm him and his wife, Rice called state authorities to examine her. The officials who looked into his complaint ruled that she was alert and didn't pose a threat to people around her, The Associated Press said. However, The Record said a welfare worker wanted to hospitalize Stevenson who'd threatened him with a gun.

Recently, Rice told his elderly relative that he would evict her from his home.

Because of the complaints Rice made, it's likely that Stevenson will be evaluated for dementia during the court proceedings, police said.

She doesn't deserve to find peace nor live out the rest of her life in comfort. She MURDERED her nephew in cold blood. My compassion lies with him and his widow! I hope she rots in jail where she belongs.

I do love your humor and comments PhloxJeana......While I do believe we need to be as careful as possible about who is allowed to obtain guns, the unfortunate reality of our society today is we actually need them in our homes for protection. People I personally know, living in "safe" uppermiddleclass neighborhoods have been repeatedly robbed, threatened, etc. But if this nephew knew his aunt was mentally dangerous, that's the same (worse than) a small child. Why the he-- wasn't that thing where she couldn't get at it ?

kinda late to be evaluating the old woman. Again there are to many bleeding hearts working in these agencies who will do anything to avoid hospitalizing people. I used to do this work and saw many cases where the person was a danger and needed in the hospital but others would try to keep him on the streets despite his repeated behaviors and threats. One guy ran over a woman in a store parking lot because he thought she was a Jehovah Witness. I evaluated the guy got an order for him to be put in the hospital they released him the next day because they said he wasn't a danger. Two months later the police called me again about him because he was getting irrational and making threats. This time he thought I was a jehovha witness and pulled a gun on me. I had to wrestle him down and take it off him and got him readmitted this time they kept him for 6 months. Two many of these people are allowed to walk free until they kill someone

This story occurred in the city I live in. Mr. Rice was an upstanding member of St. Augustine. Department of Children and Families was investigating his claims. The lady also had two previous criminal charges dating back to 2007 and before.
