Elizabeth Warren Endorsed By Russ Feingold

First Posted: 09/27/11 11:28 AM ET Updated: 11/27/11 05:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- Elizabeth Warren's campaign for U.S. Senate received a major endorsement on Tuesday, picking up the support of former Wisconsin senator Russ Feingold. It's Feingold's first Senate endorsement of the 2012 election season and a clear indication that Warren's race will be a top priority for progressives around the country.

In an email scheduled to be sent Tuesday morning, and provided to The Huffington Post by Feingold's staff, Feingold calls support for Warren's campaign "an absolutely crucial part of our fight against the nasty influence of corporate money in politics."

"Elizabeth has fought for years to rein in Wall Street and protect the middle class," writes Feingold in the email to backers of Progressives United, his political action committee.

"In 2005, she stood up against the Wall Street wish list of a bankruptcy bill -- a huge corporate giveaway I opposed in the Senate. And after the big banks drove us into a recession, Elizabeth proposed a new Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection, and then fought tirelessly to make sure the Obama administration created it. So when Elizabeth announced her decision to run for the U.S. Senate in Massachusetts this month, to keep fighting for middle class families on Capitol Hill, I couldn't have been happier."

Feingold even hints that Warren may be the best person to carry on his legacy in the Senate.

"In all my years in the Senate, I always took positions that I believed in, even when my own party tried to stand in the way," he writes. "I know Elizabeth will be exactly the same kind of senator."

He then calls on the email's recipients to donate $5 before Warren has to submit her first public financial data on Friday, which will show how much she has raised.

Warren is the Democratic frontrunner to unseat Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.), although she faces several primary challengers.

The national Democratic Party has insisted it's neutral in the primary in the race, but based on the number of emails sent out about Warren as opposed to the other candidates, it's seems clear who officials are pushing for.

Feingold's endorsement gives perhaps the strongest signal yet that Warren's race is also a top priority for progressive leaders, and the nod could likely lead to a surge of online donations from around the country.

It's also building on a progressive anti-Wall Street movement that has been growing, as Politico's Ben Smith has pointed out.

Feingold has long been an advocate for strong Wall Street reform and cleaning up corporations -- he opposed the Dodd-Frank legislation because it didn't go far enough and called on Democrats to stop taking corporate contributions. Warren has been called "Wall Street's worst nightmare" for building the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Progressives United also recently backed the New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman (D), a public official who is becoming a favorite of progressives for his push to hold banks liable for claims that they illegally foreclosed on American homeowners.

Last month, Feingold announced that he would not be seeking elected office in 2012, dashing the hopes of many progressives who were hoping to see him run for Senate again or even challenge Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) in a possible recall election.

Feingold's PAC and his affiliated nonprofit aim to mitigate the effects of -- and eventually overturn -- the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision. It has launched advocacy campaigns calling out corporate corruption and given money to progressive candidates, but the Warren announcement is the first actual endorsement.

According to a recent survey by Public Policy Polling, Warren narrowly leads Brown, 46 to 44 percent.

Former Obama official and consumer protection advocate Elizabeth Warren is now leading Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.), 46 percent to 44 percent, and has jumped 24 percentage points in name recognition over the last three months, according to a new poll from Public Policy Polling.

In the last PPP poll, in early June, Brown was 15 points ahead of Warren, and only 38 percent of  Read More...

"only politician that actually has a record of opposing money interests"....really..as she has a penison from the Fed for her job there, one from Harvard from her job there and one from the WH having had a job there. She does not seem to oppose money when it's for her interests.

What is wrong with people who have money ? People who have taken risk, worked hard, and created jobs from implementing an idea ... what is wrong with that ?

I am sick and tired of this Administration demonizing people with money that work hard. She's a Progressive. You don't even know what that is..because if you did
you would be so quick to defend her.

Actually, nornoralee, in my experience, it is the political right in this country which has all their followers going along without thinking critically what they are actually supporting.

Those on the left tend to be a much less disciplined lot, and are not afraid to take on even their leadership.

While the tea party folks have made life in the GOP a little more difficult to control, this has been the case with Democrats for a LONG time.

I believe it was Will Rogers who said that he didn't belong to an organized political party -- he was a Democrat.

Democrats are far less likely to try to alienate moderate members, and there has been plenty of progressive criticism of Obama (something rare in GOP politics).

So be careful who you label as "zombies"

I am from Massachusetts, and I will be the first to admit we have problems because our legislature has been under the control of Democrats for so long, it has the problems of a one party state, which is not healthy. The problem is that the GOP is so far out of the mainstream that they cannot mount a serious challenge in Massachusetts. I believe the Green Party could, if it focused its efforts at the grassroots, mount a serious challenge to the Republicans as an opposition party in the Mass Legislature.

As for Warren, I have followed her for some time now, and I like what she has to say (I don't care WHAT party she is with). I hear so few who actually speak with the kind of honesty which Warren does, and who is not afraid to take on any of the sacred cows.

She is genuine, and she has a gift for taking complex problems and explaining them in a manner which a layperson can understand. That is a rare gift, and one which should serve her well.

It is unlikely that Scott Brown would have even won had he run in a general election, which attracts more voters. He was also fortunate to run against a candidate who ran a terrible campaign. She didn't even like the idea of shaking hands with the voters -- never a smart move.

Warren is the real deal, a breath of fresh air, and I can vote for her knowing that she will be advocating for us -- her constituents, and not corporate lobbyists.

ELIZABETH WARREN TO LEAD SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION

Bravo, Russ Feingold, great progressive people's choice of Elizabeth Warren !
Elizabeth Warren is leading the great fight of people's democratic cause against corporate plutocratic cause promoting predatory capitalism.

In coming fight, WeThePeople will need champions for our cause. Elizabeth Warren looks just right. Elizabeth Warren's picture would look just right on first US$200 bill in coming decades to honor first female President of United States in this decade in 21st century.

She comes from the middleworkingclass roots, right background, right preparation (intellectual, emotional, professional, moral compass):--
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Warren

On character + temperament, she has "the right stuff" to put up good fight for people's cause. Elizabeth Warren has analyzed, understood and explained in this hourlong lecture on middleclass in America over past 5decades:--
"The Coming Collapse of the Middle Class"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akVL7QY0S8A

Hostile corporate takeover of American economy, culture and government is almost complete. To counteract and reverse this erosion won't be easy nor quick. But Elizabeth Warren can begin this arduous vital process to rollback anti-human regressivism, and unfurl progressive humanism. Predatory capitalism is bankrupting economy and killing humanity. Central tenet of corporate predatory capitalism based on "profit motivated business" need to be superceded by Nobel Laureate Dr. Mohammad Yunus' concept of "social business":--
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84lwmwW6TY0

Elizabeth Warren can become agent of America's transformation. "Social business" is a crucial emerging concept of appropriate 21st century global human behavior.

Which American people, nornoralee. Many more people voted in 2008 than in 2010. That is one problem with mid-term elections, too many voters sit them out.

Many Americans WANT progressive change, they just have a hard time believing that EITHER party will deliver because the system is so corrupted by corporate lobbyists and what is basically a system of legalized bribery.

Are you aware of the fact that a majority of REPUBLICAN voters want taxes raised on the wealthiest Americans? This is the second time I have seen a poll indicating this.

So the question is, why are the Republican OFFICEHOLDERS so reluctant to follow the wishes of their own voters.

Could it be that the lobbyists have a greater sway with officeholders than VOTERS do?

Don't you find something WRONG with such a system? (Whatever your views).

Everything that I've read about warren indicated that she is the epitome of what's wrong with the direction of obama’s ideas of how to destroy this country. Her draconian view about how the government governs is the same "progressive" agenda that regresses everything that this country stands for.

A very good endorsement for Ms. Warren, a very capable woman who, in my opinion, wasn't given appropriate support in her dealings for consumer protection agency. The people of Wisconsin elect Scott Walker to be governor and vote out Feingold as a senator for some teabagger? That's just ridiculous. I hope the people of Wisconsin will be wiser when elections are held again.

She was not given appropriate support in her ""dealings" for the Consumer Protection Agency because NO WANTED THAT AGENCY....and Obama knew she would never pass Congressional Hearings so she was unceremoniously sent packing. ....back to "Progressive Heaven" = Harvard. She won't win. The only people that want her are you guys, commenting here on this site.

Whether she wanted the agency or not, is her decision. Obama was right, that she would not has passed the Congressional BS that you guys dish out. No one does pretty much, since they don't approve of anything or anyone anyway. That's the way teabaggers do business, or proport to do business, but they don't do anything but try to tank the government until they get their way. As for some "teabaggers"... well, they aren't taking over squat, and there's no getting used to a bunch of fringed, narcissistic element of society who don't know jack about anything. She will beat the teabag candidate, too. You better get used to it...

nornoralee,

Let's make your statement a little more accurate. It is not true that "no one" wanted that agency. It would be more accurate to say that no one from the financial sector or their supporters in Congress wanted that  agency. The politicians can count their contributions from the Wall Street lobbyists to give you their REAL reasons for not wanting someone regulating the casino that Wall Street has become.

And yet it managed to pass both Houses of Congress -- it exists, despite "no one" wanting it.

It needs work, enforcement powers and all, but it is a start. And Elizabeth Warren was a key part of making that happen.

And Wall Street doesn't want her, because unlike so many other members of Congress, she doesn't ask softball questions. She asks tough questions, and because she understands their world, she asks the RIGHT questions, which makes these Wall Street crooks ACUTELY UNCOMFORTABLE.

And THAT is what EVERY member of Congress is supposed to be doing.

The teabaggers have not taken over here in Massachusetts. And our unemployment rate has dropped  to 7.4%. So someone here must be doing something right.

I totally agree! And, since Feingold is the front person for Progressives United, then he should be down on Wall Street protesting along with the others. This Autumn Revolution needs leaders out in front demanding changes and removal of those criminal bankstas responsible for the corruption in the industry.

Do we really need another progressive in the US legislature ? Elizabeth Warren has followed and endorsed the same policies as President Obama.

Is this the person who understands that the US is a capitalist country....not Socialism.

Yet she believes and endorses all government growth and interference in individual and business activities. She wants business to contribute more and more of their profits to pay for government programs. She is another "spread the wealth" person.

Approx. 50% of the American people do not pay taxes and a large portion of this number receives entitlements. Eventually, there will be less and less business, less revenue and more entitlements. When does thsi end...when we live in poverty waiting for the government to help us ?
