We focus lots on female politico fashion, but occasionally we set our critical style sights on the men.
As Jezebel pointed out, the ladies of "The View" did the same today, taking stock of the hefty New Jersey governor Chris Christie and asking: can an overweight person be president?
The politics-and-body image conversation has been going on for a while, with the International Business Times pointing out that there hasn't been a truly overweight president since William Taft in 1913 (Joy Behar: "I dated him"), and on the flip side, the Wall Street Journal asking in 2008 if Barack Obama was too fit to be President (spoiler alert: he wasn't).
"The View" tackled the weighty issue in regards to Chris Christie, who Elisabeth Hasslebeck claims offers something politically that candidates like Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann do not (Joy Behar: "Krispy Kremes!").
The women point out that we often have presidents who we take to task over physical and health habits (e.g. Obama's smoking) -- we do not want a president who can't exemplify the best in healthy living habits.
Fair point, but they don't exactly admit the main issue: physical appearance. The most notable example historically has been the Kennedy-Nixon presidential debate in 1960, in which the young, handsome Kennedy beat a sweaty, stubbly yet more experienced Nixon. No one wants a sweaty president (a new maxim, for sure).
But could Christie defy the maxim? Is America OK with a less than handsome, Krispy Kreme-loving leader? And what if said overweight leader was a woman -- would the same hold true?
