Snellville Patch:

There are some things you get worked up about, and then there are most things. Dr. Marilyn Peterson understands that; she doesn't major in the minor stuff.

What she does care about, she cares about deeply. For the past nine years providing children with equine therapy has been her mission.

"i totally believe that we’re given everything that we’re supposed to have,” she said. “We really don’t go without. We may not have the extra stuff that we might think we need…There’s been a lot of blessings.” Put this up against any current GOP candidate screaming that we need to give more tax breaks to the wealthiest or deregulate already under regulated corporations so the CEO's can pay themselves bigger bonuses and buy more houses/boats/airplanes. We have so desperately lost our way...

Here are the stories that show clearly what makes a great nation--a nation of great people. In a time when our county has been virtually taken over with the selfish values of greed and rampant individualism, stories like this point to what could make our country great again. how we care for those with great needs, not how we amass personal weatlh for our own selfish interests,,,

This is a wonderful type of therapy. However, it is NOT a new idea. Back in the mid 1980s - while I was on a motorcycle tour of this country - I heard a similar story. I had just left Royal Gorge (Colorado) and was heading to La Manga Pass when a discussion on the radio caught my attention. It seems that a young lady (who had recently won an award for her equestrian skills) used the award money to develop a similar program and, as she talked, I could hear the pride in her voice that she was able to help develop some self esteem in the young people with disabilities who she was helping. As static began to break up the reception I turned around and rode back so I could listen to the whole discussion. By the way, I couldn't imagine a more beautiful part of this country for such a program.

There is an autistic boy who rides at my stable. His mother says it is the only thing that calms him down. He sometimes comes in kicking and screaming, but then the horse has a magical effect on him.

I've heard similar stories and sometimes I think that the child actually believes that he/she is controlling that 'huge' animal and it give the child confidence. And instilling confidence is what it is all about. I love to hear these stories. : - )
