Culturally, politically and artistically, Vancouver [BC] doesn’t have great influence on the East Coast. We like to think of ourselves as being on the cutting edge of Pacific Rim cool, but for the most part our province is a damp dominion of wood-hewing, land-flipping, and pot-smoking. When it comes to progressive movements and creative initiatives, we leave the heavy lifting to others.

The direction of influence was reversed a bit this month when the Vancouver-published magazine Adbusters kicked off a campaign to “Occupy Wall Street.†The idea was to turn New York’s financial district into North America’s Tahrir Square, starting on Sept. 17. The tag line of the protest, “We Are the Ninety-nine Per Cent,†refers to the Americans who don’t belong to the one per cent of the population that control 42 per cent of all privately held wealth.

There were an estimated 1,000 to 1,500 protesters on the first day, with the numbers hovering in the hundreds thereafter. Small protests in solidarity with the Wall Street occupation have spread across to other U.S. cities, including Chicago and Denver. Although revolution seems highly unlikely south of the border, similar modest turnouts prefaced the mass uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt.

Occupywallst is a *Canadian* initiative by a group called adbusters!

They recruited Americans (and others) to protest in an attempt to create a global internet/social media event like Tahrir Square.

On their website, they refer to Occupywallstreet as a "campaign."

"We are a global network of artists. activists, writers, pranksters, students, educators and entrepreneurs who want to advance the new social activist movement of the information age. Our aim is to topple existing power structures and forge a major shift in the way we will live in the 21st century.

"#OCCUPYWALLSTREET is a people powered movement for democracy that began in America on September 17 with an encampment in the financial district of New York City. Inspired by the Egyptian Tahrir Square uprising and the Spanish acampadas, we vow to end the monied corruption of our democracy."

Reason #1. They're collecting unemployment and too lazy to look for work.
09:29 AM on 09/30/2011
Reason one: Their jobs were shipped overseas and their homes were taken with government support.

Yeah, couldn't be their individual responsibility or lack of.    Stop with excuses.  At what point in YOUR life do you understand YOU are the common theme?  And problem.

You'll find not everyone is as lazy as you think. Of course, you probably won't believe a word because it doesn't fit into your narrative.

So, there is no cohesive reason for the protests other than that you people have way too much time on your hands. For the social good, go feed the homeless. read to some schoolchildren. Volunteer in a hospital.

Or just get lost.

And clean up your filthy mess before you leave.

And those Iphones you're using? You are aware that Apple is trading for $400 on the NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE, right?

The mess is people like you who have too much time on your hands. If you can't find a job, don't blame Wall Street, they create jobs; blame this administration that caused the loss of all your jobs.

LOL

The "occupiers" have no access to any Wall St or Fed execs!

"You are aware that Apple is trading for $400 on the NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE, right?"

Excuse me -- can you give me JUST ONE GOOD REASON why that should matter to most working class Americans? After all, these folks simply DO NOT HAVE BIG $$$$ to invest in the stock market -- and you can bet the house that probably NOT A SINGLE ONE of them are in a position to INHERIT A HUGE FORTUNE when a wealthy relative kicks the bucket.

'Nuff said.

No, enough is NOT said. You're claiming to hate Wall Street. What else do you hate?

You're hypocrites.
11:29 AM on 09/30/2011
Virtually every one of the kids out there protesting Wall Street worships Apple and 'it's products. Their frequent "must have" purchases of the latest Apple products across the country fuel Wall Street success.

Why don't they refrain from such purchases, which are simply making Apple and everyone who trades in Apple wealthy?

Hypocrites.

I can give you one good reason why the protestors and now the labor unions should not occupy Wall Street. That is because a home grown terrorist could use that crowd and the disorder to mask a terrorist attack on New York. If the authorities come to that conclusion there is going to be a really bad situation in the city. If that does happen Bloomberg and Obama are going to pay a huge price for it.

It doesn't look like you are keeping the public streets public. You folks look like a bunch of dimwits who can't answer the question when put to you. What the h-- do you think you are accomplishing by this nonsense? Are the Corporations going to bend over for you, .......what are you expecting to get from this?

Real Americans are beginning to realize that the threat of 2nd and 3rd generations junk is just more lies to stir up the honest hard working people that still have jobs or want them. Even the failure of communism disproves that "we want our entitlements because we like them and not work" dribble you're spreading.

My generation marched, sat in, demonstrated, got high, got naked, streaked, created happenings, coined the designate for NYPD, P= PIG, and thus began the movement. So now my hometown, I was born not far from WS into a life of privilege, what we called responsibility. What's all the fuss from folk who can't find proper work. Get your act together and become a banker, heck a twenty-million dollar BONUS, (bonus? so what's the salary? O), sounds like a nice piece of change to most of us, right? Y/N? Now that civil rights have been somewhat accomplished excepting for the GLBT, ( is that right? sounds like a lettuce, tomato, bacon sandwich, mmm), this latest demand from those among our citizenry, who are no part of the top 1%, loiter for parity.. Unions are joining the protest, the transit workers, hmm,Archie Bunker, the return. WEll good for them. However this protest is just a tad late in my bookkeepers opinion; or should that be bookie? So good luck, wishing you all the best, don't hurt the cops they're just following orders, just following---YOU MUST WIN!

All I have to say is Fiat Currency or Resource Based Economy! Hmmm. So hard to Choose from.... We gotta try something different and stop complaining about the people who were born into and created this hell. People need to Research what is suitable for our Children, our Families, and our Society. I believe this country can make that change. We as People need to make choices that will benefit everyone. The more We don't know the worse The World Banking Families of the Financial Systems will screw us all. I gotta give it to many of those people out there. At least they're trying to make a real difference. Hopefully they will weed out the JackAsses mingled within the crowd venting for some other reasons other than ending this hell created from money and the control it has ravaged upon the lives billions.

Yeah, man, appealing to emotion is the way to get Americans on your side.

"boohity-hoo!   I need a job and no one will give me one.  I will go protest now.  They owe me everything, maaaaan!"

The real reasons are not much better.  Had to drop out of college?  Huh?  The government guarantees loans for college.    Lost your girlfriend?  What's the matter, sir, did you four inches not please her anymore?  (That has nothing to do with wall street so I made a joke about his dangus).

This makes Americans look bad.  No one here looks good.  They look foolish.  They have no understanding of the world.  Oh, you cannot get by on your stupid music hobby?  Oh noes, people in most of the world make next to nothing forever.  How about moving someplace were your labor is in demand and living on less?   Ever think of that?  How about dropping your iPhone plan and going to prepaid until you have enough money to put 5% of your income into a cell phone?

I just do not get this at all.  Why will people not admit that they made mistakes?  Yeah, it sucks that you lost your job, but no one owes you another one.   Society does most definitely not owe you now either.
