Red Sox Collapse: Loss To Orioles Costs Boston A.L. Wild Card

By DAVID GINSBURG   09/29/11 01:23 AM ET   AP

BALTIMORE -- The Boston Red Sox completed their September collapse in horrific and historic fashion, falling out of the playoff chase by allowing two ninth-inning runs in a 4-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night.

The Red Sox held a nine-game lead in the AL wild-card race after Sept. 3, but a 7-19 swoon left them tied with Tampa Bay entering the final day of the regular season.

Only minutes after this game ended, the Rays completed their comeback from a 7-0 deficit with an 8-7 win over the New York Yankees in 12 innings.

Even if Tampa Bay lost, the Red Sox faced the prospect of a quick turnaround following a long night at Camden Yards that included a rain delay of 1 hour, 26 minutes in the middle of the seventh inning.

When the rain came, Tampa Bay trailed 7-0. By the time play resumed, the Rays and Yankees were tied at 7 heading into the 10th inning.

The Orioles won the game in the ninth against Boston closer Jonathan Papelbon (4-1), who struck out the first two batters before giving up a double to Chris Davis. Nolan Reimold followed with a double to score pinch-runner Kyle Hudson, and Robert Andino completed the comeback with a single to left that Carl Crawford couldn't glove.

Boston became the first team to miss the postseason after leading by as many as nine games for a playoff spot entering September, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Jim Johnson (6-5) worked the ninth for Baltimore.

Dustin Pedroia homered for the Red Sox, who went through the entire month of September without winning consecutive games.

Pitching on three days' rest, Jon Lester limited the last-place Orioles to two runs and four hits over six gritty innings. But it wasn't enough to prevent the Red Sox from absorbing one final blow.

Boston had several chances to pad a 3-2 lead it took in the fifth inning but was never able to complete the task.

After Pedroia hit a solo homer off Alfredo Simon in the fifth, the Orioles got the potential tying run to third base in the bottom half and in the sixth before Lester worked out of trouble.

In the seventh, Boston's David Ortiz was thrown out trying to stretch a single, and with two outs rookie catcher Ryan Lavanway bounced into a fielder's choice. Lavanway, who homered twice in an 8-7 win Tuesday, went 0 for 5 and stranded nine runners.

The Red Sox blew another chance to increase the lead in the eighth when Marco Scutaro took off from first base on a double by Crawford. But Scutaro stutter-stepped before getting to third and was out at the plate.

In the ninth, Lavanway grounded into a double play with one out and the bases loaded. It was the third time he came to the plate following an intentional walk to Adrian Gonzalez.

The Red Sox went up 1-0 in the third when Mike Aviles walked, took second on a single by Jacoby Ellsbury and scored on a single by Pedroia. Ellsbury's single extended his hitting streak against Baltimore to 36 games, dating to April 2009.

J.J. Hardy hit a two-run homer in the bottom half, only minutes after the scoreboard showed the Yankees increasing their lead over Tampa Bay to 5-0. Hardy's 30th homer followed a leadoff walk to Davis.

Boston pulled even in the fourth when Scutaro doubled, advanced on a groundout and scored on a balk.

NOTES: Boston activated RHP Clay Buchholz (back strain) from the 60-day DL and placed 3B Kevin Youkilis (back strain) on the 60-day DL. ... Hardy's homer gave Baltimore two players with 30 (Mark Reynolds 37) for the first time since 1996, when Brady Anderson had 50 and Rafael Palmeiro hit 39. ... Lester's performance lowered the ERA of Boston's starters this month to 7.08. ... Baltimore RF Nick Markakis left after eight innings with a bruised pelvis.

As an SF Giants fan, all I can do this year is watch from afar. If I was to bet on the matchups, I'd guess Yankees-Phillies in the World Series. They spent the money to sign the best available players (other than Boston). And though chemistry is also important, the other teams probably can't overcome the Yankee sluggers and the Phillie pitching this year.

My dark horse picks would be Arizona and Tampa, both of which made surprising progress, despite limited resources. Regardless of who wins, day 162 of the season already made it memorable.

SO, WHAT IS THE BIG THING. DON'T YOU PEOPLE REMEMBER 1978? I USED TO BE A RED SOX FAN TILL 78. BOSTON WILL FIND NEW WAYS TO LOOSE. THE YANKEES OWN THEM OUTRIGHT. BOSTON SHOULD BE RELEGATED TO AAA STATUS. THEY ARE NOT MAJOR LEAGE MATERIAL, NEVER WERE

The New York Yankee$...who have lost more World Series Championships than any other team...and after losing twice as many games to the Red Sox this year than they won...will be awful quiet when they are dumped in the play offs! Better start chewing your fingernails when those e minor league class Yankee$ pitchers take the mound against the Detroit Tigers! Pick up a couple of extra six packs before the games...you'll need them! Roland C. Woodaka

The September collapse of the Boston Red Sox was not the fault of the now dismissed manager Tito Francona! In fact it was a juggling act how Francona kept them on top until September! But the loss of starting pitchers due to injury, the failure of key hitters to come through in the clutch and failure of million dollar Carl Crawford to deliver spelled out the coming doom! Add to that the one terrible mistake Francona made to keep starting two pitchers that have lost it in the rotation...some say by necessity...but actually by choice! Be that as it may...after 70 years of being a Red Sox fan...we will be back next year! Roland C. Woodaka

total bust...you always here people talk about Karma but you rearely get an opportunity to see it play out...I am convinced they bough Crawford to psych out the Rays...why else would they need a speedy left fielder in that park? it went against Theo's sabermetrics in just about every category...he won't lead off...the have Ellsbury to steal....
Then to see him in that press conference...saying ..."my heart was always in Boston"...and "my son can pull out his gear of his favorite team now..."...the guy got what he deserved and so did Boston...

one more bit of irony. That notch in the wall that Logo hit that ball over was called "crawfords corner"...they lowered it so the fans in those seats can get a better look at the "star" Tampa picked, nurtured and eventually made their highest paid player...karma yo...pure karma

The Terry/Theo press conference this afternoon was interesting. I got the feeling that Terry warned Theo that there were major problems a month ago, Theo ignored/downplayed the problems, and the chickens came home to roost. It looked to me like Terry is really angry and not particularly interested in coming back to Boston. On the other hand, Theo took responsibility far more than I would have imagined. The best part was when Terry pushed Theo out of the way to get out of the room as fast as possible.

The worst thing about this collapse was that the Rays didn't play that great down the stretch, just good enough to pass the Sox.

The Rays did what they had to do, but without the Red Sox September swoon, they don't sniff the Wild Card.

Lose 20 of your last 27 games and not win two games in a row, September was beautiful.

Thank you Red Sox Nation for all the laughs. Let the blame game and finger pointing begin, should be as much fun to watch as the collapse.

LOL @ Boston

Not a Yankees fan, but an O's fan-for 45 years here.
I know that Yankees attract hangers-on, but there is no larger group of bandwagon fans than Red Sox fans. So many of them say they've been Sox fans all their lives-well most of them must be 7 years old, as they started coming out of the woodwork when they finally won a Series. The dead giveaway are the so-called fans who wear the denim Sox caps with the socks on the hat, with the pre-frayed brim and the brim bent oh-so-very-Abercrombie & Fitch-like. The "fans" who have conveniently forgotten about the Mo Vaughn period, and will despise Buckner (it was McNamara's fault for not putting in Stapleton at first base, btw) and don't seem to remember that Calvin Schiraldi didn't do the Sox many favors in that series either.
Way too many Sox fans have selective memories, and will follow any trends that will make them feel "part of the gang".
Real fans know the history.
