Sly Stone Not Homeless, He's Just Not Living In His House, Says Friend

Sly Stone Homeless

First Posted: 09/29/2011 5:34 pm Updated: 03/26/2012 4:16 pm

Earlier this week, funk legend Sly Stone made headlines due to a New York Post story that alleged that the music icon is currently homeless and living inside a white camper van in Los Angeles.

Now comes word that Stone (born Sylvester Stewart) reportedly has a four-bedroom California mansion rented by his attorney, Robert Alan. According to journalist Roger Friedman, Stone lives in the van as a matter of choice and refuses to stay in the Woodland Hills home. A close friend to the singer told Friedman that "Sly always liked living in Winnebagos. He never liked being in a house," adding that "he's too paranoid to come inside."

Since the New York Post report surfaced, Stone has opened up on video about the possibility of attending rehab to help his drug addiction, stating, "I'll tell you what, I got a rehab [inaudible] chosen," before saying that he would park his van outside the facility to work on new music with the van's makeshift studio.

It sure was amazing to see this articular, my employer told me about it. Amazing as I was one of the four room mates from his rehab days in Ft. Myers Fl. One big difference I've been clean since 1984, I never slipped back into the old habits. I've changed my life moved on so to say.I've raised an eagle scout, "good kid" and I'm the service manager of a prominent plumbing company. I'm no millionaire but I would not trade my life for any of the good times he may have had. I'm married 22yrs now, and still tell the stories of rehab. Sylvester made us laugh. Quoting "Are you HUNGRY?" I wish him the best and it's never too late.

This is why we need to get back to investigative reporting and not just rush to be the first to put a story out even if it means we don't have all the details.

Many young people don't know that Sly was one of the biggest and most innovative rock stars in the world in 1970 & 1971. The most imitated of all funk singers, he pioneered the use of talk box effects in pop music years before Joe Walsh and Peter Frampton. He and bassist Larry Graham introduced the pluck/thump/slap bass line that dominates rhythm sections today. But by 1981, his mind and body were so fried by drugs he had to be held up by his armpits to make momentary on stage appearances when he toured with Parliament-Funkadelic. What an incredible waste of talent!

Hi munky5oh; I don't think it's hate. It's the reality of an addict. Sly said he had a rehab picked out. He didn't say when he was goin'. As a former addict, I know he's lyin'. I lied. If he thinks he can call the shots in a rehab he may as well stay where he is. No one can "make you get clean and sober. If Sly doesn't want it; he ain't gonna get it. Life.

He has always been one of the coolest singers around. He puts on a very visual show and is a good entertainer. Hope he comes clean and gets himself on the right road again.

Some people cant wrap their heads around the fact that MANY are homeless...BY CHOICE. Immigrants seeking a better life, still come to The U.S. in droves. I have helped out young medical school students who came here from India. They would sleep on the floor, 3 and 4 to a two bedroom apartment. No T.V. No VCR. No I-phone. Their families had sacrificed for YEARS for their opportunity and they APPRECIATED America! Now please. Explain to me again why I should care about someone who had it all, and wasted his life on drugs???? You could give this man a new record contract tomorrow, and he'd be broke in less than a year.

i dont care where he sleeps, but don't do an interview claiming to be homeless to get sympathy from people when it's not true. he is now a bottom feeder in my eyes.
