Burger Bash 2011: Our 9 Favorite Burgers From The 2011 New York Wine & Food Festival

First Posted: 10/01/11 10:27 AM ET   Updated: 10/05/11 01:06 PM ET

We've really become red meat experts this week. On Thursday, we devoured over a dozen meatballs and Friday we managed to eat 20 (20!) different burgers. There is always fierce competition at the New York Wine & Food Festival's Burger Bash and this year competitors brought their A game. The judge's prize went to Abe & Arthur's, with Burger & Barrel taking the people's choice (the second win for chef Josh Capon!).

It wasn't an easy task evaluating all the fine meat available, but after much deliberation, HuffPost Food has settled on our top picks. Check out our top 9 Burger Bash burgers below:

DBGB's "The Piggie," a beef burger with BBQ pulled pork, jalapeno mayonnaise and lettuce on a cheddar bun was a bit too sweet for our taste, but edged out the bottom half of the burgers present at Burger Bash.

To those who are posting that these look "little," this was a tasting event where one or two bites of each burger allows you to sample many different offerings.

What is it with this obsession with small burgers. Tall doesn't fool me. Yuppies.

When you go to a food festival things are served in miniature so that people can taste many things. To serve a full version of these things would mean a lot of wasted food.

I admire you for trying to explain festival tastings to these culinary cretins.

Mostly those tiny, pretentious burgers that are too tall to put in your mouth.

Excellent choice for #1. The roasted chiles and cheddar are the perfect compliment this burger.

I'm digging Bareburger (chain of 5 restaurants in Astoria, Brooklyn and Manhattan). Had a Jalepeno Express burger made with Elk meat on brioche last week. New fans in our family!

Why? Why show burgers with uncooked meat -- as the BEST?

In July, the CDC announced that E. coli and other food borne diseases cause 48 million people to be sick each year. Eating not completely cooked hamburger is universally condemned by everyone who knows about these things.

So why is HuffPost (who knows also) so cavalier about showing not properly cooked hamburger as among the best? Surely, you don't want your readers to get sick, do you? ... Er, do you?

Because it tastes the best! And I'm guessing that most of these restaurants grind their own meat which eliminates the source of most E. coli contamination - the mega meat processing factory.

I will NEVER eat meat well done. It's a sin in my book. And, no, I've never gotten food poisoning. I am a stickler when it comes to freshness, storage, and prep, though.

Sliders is what they're all shooting for it looks like to me. Too small. Then everyone wants to pile on junk like avacado.
The best burgers have no junk, just good old burger and some fresh raw onion and a slice of tomato. A couple of pickle slices and some of your fav. cheese, lest we not forget the condoments.

I'm partial to a dash of both ketchup and spicy mustard on the masterpiece you described. And it needs to be on a seriously good roll.

We had been going with bison for a while but the price just went through the roof, more than tripple, now like $10.00 for a one lb. pack. Can't do that.
