Occupy Wall Street: Celebrities Show Support

First Posted: 10/02/11 04:40 PM ET   Updated: 12/02/11 05:12 AM ET

The Occupy Wall Street movement is a populist sit-in demonstration against what protestors charge are the corrupt practices of the financial industry, and the bought government complicity, that are helping drive the majority of the nation's citizens into ruin.A collective that amplifies its voice with a passed-around Peoples' Microphone, they have gained more attention over the past few weeks, culminating Saturday with a mass arrest of protestors on the Brooklyn Bridge.

While the movement claims representation over the "other" 99% of the nation -- those not making millions of dollars a year -- they have received support from a number of left-leaning actors and entertainers, who, despite their high incomes, believe that government policy is skewed toward big business and the wealthy.

Mark Ruffalo showed up over the weekend and tweeted non-stop his support, while last week, Roseanne Barr gave a speech that called for a combination of capitalism and socialism and a system based not on "bloated talk radio hosts" and "that goddamn Aynn Rand book."

Here's a look at some of the celebs who have lent their voice -- or at least investigated -- the case.

Entertainers, are not any more prone to intelligence than the average person on the street.  Often I like an actor for their acting skills, but more often than not when asked to speak without a script sound extremely uninformed on most issues as is true with the general population.  What is happening a lot these days is that people mouth off about issues they haven't even taken the time to really  Read More...

Most of the celebrities defending OWS are hypocrites. Isn't Russell Simmons worth $325 million? Roseanne Barr and Susan Sarandon are worth eight figures. And how much is Yoko raking in from royalties?

These celebs are grandstanding to try and give their careers some gravitas. Others are has beens desperate for attention. I don't see them donating space or a place to crash like they should, Where's the Lincoln Steffens in them? Instead they just pose and show solidarity. Baloney their with the 1% and are worse because they feign support.

WE can't chose who supports OWS nor do we want to. OWS is open for anyone who is aware that a selct group of the 1% controls almost all aspects of legislation, and has been controlling it for decades.

Anyone who strives for justice and equality is willing to achieve that using peaceful means is welcome.

im so tired of hearing the media highjack this and say that the protesters are against millionaires.... most people i have talked to are against the multi multi million and billionaires buying off our government (BOTH SIDES).
11:18 AM on 10/15/2011
big money owned media has to go. conflict of interest, propaganda, brainwashing, lies, spin, deception.
12:18 AM on 10/16/2011
a good thing is that the "adults" (my parents generation) are starting to notice that too.. they go out side and then come home and sees how the news reports things that are going on in our town and the media are so out of touch with the average american. people are waking up now...slowly but surely. ever notice how all the pundents on cable news seem to come from that 1% ? the news isnt accountable for their words, not yet.. but dont be surprised when when "fox noise" ms+cnbc and cnn are surrounded by protesters.. you can already see how their reporting the protests.. their scared...and their terrified of youtube turning on them just like the NY mayor and police didnt evict the protesters.. their scared.. "the world is watching". i show my parents and their friends of the protesters walking away peacefully with their hands up and backs to the officers only to be punched in the back of the head. they were all angry and angry that the news isnt showing stuff like this lol and my parents and their friends are no "hippies". public opinion is turning..

Occupy Wall Street will not meet any of its goals until specific corporations are boycotted. There are plenty to choose from. Shame on you if you have money in BofA.

Is having Roseanne Barr supporting your cause really considered a good thing? And Alec Baldwin? The man who is a pimp for a credit card company.......seriously?
11:19 AM on 10/15/2011
he donates all the money from those adds you fool
07:53 AM on 10/18/2011
I could care less if he donates all the money he makes from the commercials. That is not the point snafu. He is promoting a bank that these occupiers are railing against. By doing this, he is proving himself to be a pimp. Fool you say? Quit drinking the kool-aid.

Want to make a difference and show folks that we can get things done. Anybody hate anyone more than the Koch Brothers? Well who knew that they own 100% of Georgia Pacific (Dixie Cups, Brawny, Vanity Fair, Angel Soft TP, Quilted Northern TP and others. It's not like we can't find other paper cups, napkins and TP to buy. Let's not buy ANY of their stuff. A good, old fashioned boycott. Imagine if they saw their business go down 25% in a couple of months. Then they'd notice. Peace!.

obama should start throwing the banksters in jail to make up for not doing in when he first got into office. if he were to make a stand now people would flock behind him

All day, all night, occupy wall street! The public needs to LOOK and LISTEN to these crowds. I keep hearing haters say "youth", "jobless", "lazy", "hippy" when speaking of them. They are AMERICANS of ALL AGES some lucky to HAVE JOBS, others struggling to find jobs. If you are not effected, word, but these are soldiers, teachers, commercial airline pilots who showed up en mass last week, firefighters, Nurses and Nurse's aides (that's me). LOOK and LISTEN and you may learn something about the way today's world is.

to snaFU20 do u have a job or life

Such an amusing heading. The MEGA wealthy HOLLYWOOD elite in the "1%" are supporting their cause. I think their support would be best expressed if they got their checkbooks out and started writing till it was all gone and they too lived within the same circles as the other 99%. They also should be responsible for giving as least 50-100 unemplyed workers a job, indefinitely. As if their showing of "support" exempts them from being the targeted 1%. The fact is they are part of the 1% but their above the litmus test b/c they are "allowed" to make millions?

Rosanne Barr wants people sent to "Re-education Camps."
Perhaps she forgot that her people were put into Concentration Camps.
What an irony. The Bible does say that the dopes shall inherit the earth.
11:25 AM on 10/15/2011
she was talking about the repubs and their followers needed to be re-educated
05:43 PM on 10/03/2011
It is such sweet irony to see Alec Baldwin supporting this effort after we've all seen his commercial for Citibank's credit card division. Imploring people to get credit cards from that fine massive bank. He was paid over $1M for his part. And now he's here to support the Occupiers?

This one takes the gold medal.
