If BYU is known for one thing, it's the school's affiliation with Mormonism. The influence of Mormon culture on the school is impossible to avoid, but considering that 98% of the student body has ties to the LDS Church, this is generally seen as a positive thing. According to Emily, a sophomore at BYU, "The best thing about BYU is that we're allowed to discuss our religion in class where it is relevant. There are lots of good things about being sponsored by our church-- tuition is cheap, and our church leaders come to campus a lot." Students here seem unanimous about their praise for the school. "It's a fantastic school for the price. Very inexpensive for the education offered," says Josh, a communications major.

University of Hawaii at Hilo! World class astronomy program ( we have the largest telescopes on the planet here). Great education at a bargain price for residents.

I like the UCI student "Our academics could not be better, we're the #13 best research university"

I could see how they could be better, what about being #12?

Why would anyone want to go there who can think for themselves? BYU is a place built upon idiocy.

If you're interested in this sort of thing, W&M is 400 years old-the 2nd oldest college in America. And it's a lovely campus, right on the edge of Colonial Williamsburg (a nice place to take the parents on visits).

EEEK-a typo! Should be 300 years old.

James Madison University in Harrisonburg VA should be on this list. Out of state tuition is only around $28K a year and the undergrad business school is #28 in the country.

who needs projections when you are going to have your own planet someday? BYU is no valid university...it is an indoctrination center and pr machine..like Liberty or Oral Roberts....

maybe not to anti-mormon bigots.

BYU's straight-and-narrow, settled, hard-working alumni crush the repressed adolescents college grads in the post-college work market. sorry UC grads.

Sorry but there are more people with PhDs ,JDs . MDs and other advanced degress that got their undergraduate degree from U C Berkeley than any other university

These are state schools. If you are looking for best debt for your buck, you should look into the private schools, so good at producing professional thieves: schools like duke, yale, princeton, and alike that offer nothing more than the above but at much higher rates as far as education is concerned.
10:47 AM on 10/03/2011
True enough, but still...

Not all private schools are created equal . Most private schools take anyone no matter how dumb . Here are some private California colleges that you couldn't pay me to attend -
Biola, Cal Lutheran, University of San Diego, Chapman, Univ of the Pacific. Most private schools are easy to get into and not worth the money . Most public colleges eg Cal State Dominguez Hills are also for the intellectually challenged .
If you attend Loyola Marymount , don' t think you are at Princeton just because both are private .
Some public universities have excellent medical , law and MBA programs e.g UCLA and UC Berkeley but they are also getting expensive.
