Burrito haven Chipotle brought stars of food and music to Lincoln Park Saturday for 'Cultivate Chicago,' a free, all-day festival featuring cooking demonstrations, artisanal food and drink tastings and a concert series.
Proceeds from food sales were donated to FamilyFarmed.org, a nonprofit that works with family farmers to build local food systems, according to a release on the company's website. The partnership is part of the restaurant chain's Chipotle Cultivate Foundation.
The Foundation's recently amped-up campaign to promote ethically-sourced food included the release of a video accompanied by Willie Nelson covering Coldplay's "The Scientist" (above). The video went viral, and $0.60 of each song sale on iTunes benefits the nonprofit.
'Cultivate Chicago' was headlined by Calexico and a host of chefs including Richard Blais of The Spence, Amanda Freitag of the Food Network, and local stars like Paul Kahan of The Publican and Big Star and Paul Virant of vie and Perennial Virant.
Chipotle eats were plentiful, and regional breweries including Revolution, Bell's and Half Acre were represented in the beer hall. In keeping with the Foundation's mission to raise awareness about food issues, five "experience tents" scattered across the park educated visitors about sustainable clothing and natural fabrics, animal confinement in factory farms and other related issues. Attending at least four earned visitors a free burrito.
Musical guests at the concert stage included White Rabbits, Mayer Hawthorne and The County, and the festival closed with an encore from Calexico.
