Chrysler, General Motors Report Sales Gains Of At Least 20 Percent

First Posted: 10/03/11 12:09 PM ET Updated: 12/03/11 05:12 AM ET

General Motors Co and Chrysler Group reported September U.S. auto sales gains of at least 20 percent, a sign that consumers have returned as vehicle inventories have risen after being crimped by the March earthquake in Japan.

Sales for GM, the No. 1 U.S. and global automaker, were paced by a 34 percent gain in full-sized pickup trucks and SUVs.

GM's vice president for U.S. sales, Don Johnson, said consumers' decision to buy in greater numbers outweighs "the bad news that appears to be slowing down the broader economic recovery."

Auto sales each month are an early indicator of consumer demand.

Chrysler, the No. 3 U.S. automaker, had its best performance for September since 2007, selling 127,334 vehicles. GM sold 207,145 vehicles in the U.S. market.

Volkswagen AG, No. 10 in the U.S. market last year, continued to outpace the industry in September, showing a sales gain of 36 percent.

GM, Chrysler and Volkswagen were the first automakers to report monthly U.S. sales for September, which is expected to be the strongest month since April, industry analysts said last week.

In another indicator of economic resilience, U.S. factory activity expanded at a faster pace than expected in September, the Institute for Supply Management said on Monday.

Stronger showings by Toyota Motor Corp and Honda Motor Co are expected, after the top two Japanese automakers in the U.S. market have returned to full production after having inventories slimmed after the March earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Chrysler is managed and primarily owned by Italy's Fiat SpA.

U.S. new light vehicle auto sales were averaging 13.1 million on a seasonally adjusted annualized basis in the first four months of the year. Supply of vehicles and auto parts began to cut sales beginning in May.

Analyst Peter Nesvold of Jefferies & Co said last week that September will be the first month since April not to feel a hangover from the Japanese earthquake.

J.D. Power & Associates as well as Edmunds.com forecast that September sales will be 12.9 million vehicles on the seasonally adjusted annualized basis the industry uses to monitor sales strength.

Jonathan Browning, Volkswagen America chief executive, said he expected September auto sales to reach 13 million vehicles on an annualized basis.

Mike Jackson, chief executive of AutoNation Inc, the largest U.S. auto dealer group, said that pent-up demand will boost auto sales in the fourth quarter, beginning with the September results.

Jackson said that both Honda and Toyota will continue to replenish their inventory through the fourth quarter, but had not yet reached an inventory level seen before the earthquake. But he said he was pleased that both Japanese companies are now back to full production.

Before the industry downturn during the recent recession, U.S. also sales averaged nearly 17 million vehicles a year, but began to fall in 2008 and by 2009 hit the lowest level since the early 1980s, at 10.4 million.

GM shares were up 0.9 percent at $20.36 and Ford shares were down 0.1 percent at $9.66 on Monday morning on the New York Stock Exchange.

Nothing against GM or Chrysler, but I can't understand why any person would buy anything but Ford product. Forget all the bailout hullabaloo, I saw a Mustang super cobra jet at a car show and the thing looked like it was made by a team of jewelers, every inch of the car was perfect. The fit, finish, designs and engineering Ford has come up with these last few years are incredible. A BMW looks cheap parked next to them, and forget about the really boring cars the Japanese are making, it's easy to, they all look the same.

I hope these figures are accurate, that they are not revised downwards like the jobs claims always are now days. That's a fair point to make, given the Obama admin's investment with our tax dollars into GM and Chrysler. We know that the truth is often a foreign concept to them!

My husband purchased a new Taurus SHO a month ago and loves it. I have always been partial to owning a new BMW which I was able to lease a week ago. I will not buy anything from GM, especially since they don't stand behind their warranties and Chrysler's are a mechanics dream.

Better try keeping up with the news, Sparky ! GM is suggesting that bankruptcy will excuse them from fixing the issue. Now, who is attacking the middle class ?

Baggerz, Trolls and Pugs are drooling at the mouth, in anticipation of buying their first Chinese Car from Wal-Mart! Their Patriotism should not be confused with being CHEAP and being the biggest hippo-critters when it comes to selling their country out! I would venture to guess that 90% of Bags, trolls, and Repugs are Wally World Fanatics!

If we didn't give loans to the American Auto Indusrty, we would have lost most all of it. Be a true Patriot. Buy only American made AND OWNED cars! Most bags drive foreign cars......and that is a shame, but they truly are a shameless lot! Buy American EVERY chance you have! You can make it work....again! Our Christmas shopping is done and it is ALL-AMERICAN!

The American Auto Industry killed the American Steel Industry. The Automakers wanted to buy cheap steel from foreign countries and helped bankrupt the American Steel Industry. My family of former steel workers only bought American cars, that is, until the American Auto Industry fought the tariffs so they could buy foreign steel. That's not very Patriotic if you ask me. Now we buy the best car for the money, which happens to be foreign 90% of the time.

The Chevy Cruze has been the top selling small car for quite some time. And the new Sonic is poised to do the same to the sub-compact area. I know it pains all the "Government Motors" crowd to accept the truth that GM is building some world class cars. Finally.

These aren't earnings numbers, they're just numbers reflecting how many cars/trucks where sold. If they make some money, maybe the US taxpayer can get some of the 14 billion we told we where not going to get back.

Even if we don't get any of that 14 billion back, it'll still be some of the best money that the government ever spent. We got a HUGE bargain by avoiding the complete crash of the American automotive industry.

General Motors said that it made $2.5 billion in the second quarter, an 89 percent increase over its results in the period a year earlier. The results were higher than analysts had expected, given the slow rate of industry sales in the American market.

The earnings were driven by strong sales in G.M.’s core North American market, where it made $2.2 billion, up from $1.6 billion in the second quarter of 2010. The company, which posted profit in all of its automotive regions, said it earned $100 million in its European unit, which has been struggling with higher costs and sluggish sales. The results included a $100 million restructuring cost, G.M. said. In Asia, G.M. reported income of $600 million, while in South America it posted income of $100 million.

General Motors reported that revenue for the period increased 19 percent, to $39.4 billion. The company ended the quarter with cash reserves and available credit of $39.7 billion, compared with $33.6 billion in the period a year earlier.
