From zombie parades and costume contests to haunted houses and hayrides (to haunted anything!), the Halloween season casts its spell and awakens our inner ghouls and goblins. As part of FrightQuest -- a MapQuest series on spooky destinations and activities -- here are three options to celebrate Halloween in Rhode Island that are sure to be a scream.

Fortress of Nightmares At Fort Adams

Are you brave enough to enter the Fortress of Nightmares? That's what Fort Adams, in the tiny town of Newport, Rhode Island, transforms into every year for Halloween. In the Tunnels of Terror attraction, the fort opens its dark maze of tunnels to victims who want to meet the lost souls of the past. Or visitors can go on the Ghost Hunt, where they'll accompany actual ghost hunters on a trip through the residences of Civil War soldiers to search for paranormal events. Tickets are available in early October and are $10 per event. The Fortress is not recommended for people sensitive to being scared or children under 12.

Field Of Screams

Field of Screams in Rhode Island has three scary attractions for adults and teens (it's not recommended for the very young). The Haunted Insane Asylum has animatronic horrors that belong in cages; the Dead River Haunted Hayride includes lurking zombies; and Cirque du Souls features horrible clowns in a 4-D haunted maze. The attractions are open weekends in October and tickets are $18 per person.

Not just for Halloween, the Providence Ghost Tour in Rhode Island is offered weekends from May through mid-November, plus every day in October. The lantern-light tour takes participants through Providence's historic East Side with guides recounting the ghostly past of the city. Note: "The Providence Ghost Tour cannot be held responsible for any haunting, soul-possession or poltergeist activity endured before, during or after participation on the tour." You've been warned.
