A Day Made Of Glass: Corning's Stunning Glimpse Into The Future (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 10/05/11 06:10 PM ET   Updated: 12/05/11 05:12 AM ET

The rise of the touchscreen, tablets and mobile devices has been well documented.

It's clear by now that this type of technology will play a big role in the future. How big?

Corning has its own view on that. (Scroll down for video.) The glass company, which is behind the glass used for iPad, Zune HD, Surface 2.0 and other devices, explains:

Can you imagine organizing your daily schedule with a few touches on your bathroom mirror? Chatting with far-away relatives through interactive video on your kitchen counter? Reading a classic novel on a whisper-thin piece of flexible glass?

Corning says it's not just thinking about these scenarios, it's researching how to bring them alive.

If their vision becomes a reality, mirrors become windows into our lives, television screens interactive displays and the world transforms in front of our eyes through augmented reality.

Predictions for the future are nothing new, but if technology does evolve this way, we're in for a spectacular new interactive world. Have a glimpse with this amazing video: "A Day Made Of Glass."

well, after watching that video, I can say without reservation that I am a dinosaur. "Extinct and loving it!" as Gary Larsen said. It was like watching a sci fi flick and I knew I would never go there. I couldn't even handle a cell phone, and that was when they first came out! It's all wonderful and all, but I wonder who will be in on the new technology. And wh y. I am sure the MIC has their own version.

Why is she driving to work? Looks like the camera can move around on the cook top. She should just look into the stove for a macaroni and video meeting. Oh yeah, we are still doing combo words. A Macareeting.

This all looks fantastic, but somebody somewhere still has to shovel the coal. Maybe they could use a glass shovel.

A remarkable presentation.  The best part is, none of it is very far-fetched.  :)

This future is only for the ultra rich of this country. The rest will just have to watch the future pass them by on the sidelines. Better educate your children!

No, just like all technology, it will just take longer to filter down to the average person. But even the lower middle class people of the U.S. have technology in their homes that, 30 years ago, would have seemed amazing: iPods, xbox, smart phones, HD TVs...etc. Technology has a way of becoming cheaper and cheaper, the more people buy it. HD TVs were $20,000 15 years ago. Back then, someone could have said "In the future, only the rich will have those," but that's not how it works.

Two considerations that possibly counter the trend you're outlining: 1) Devices become less expensive but require paid subscription accounts to run; 2) Moore's law not known to last beyond a few more cycles, negatively impacting the trend of decreased cost.

The only statement of value in this post is the insight on educating yourself. The sooner we move from a society of handouts to one that values education and innovation, the sooner we all will benefit.

handouts? You mean like roads, public school system, fire fighter and police services, post office, financial aid, grants, and subsidies to various large entities?

Oh I value education and innovation all right. If you crate wealth, produce something like, i don't know, the light bulb or even pick produce off a field you should have the right of a living wage and yes, receive the fruits of innovation.

However, I don't see people receiving that healthcare benefits of innovation. Those benefits are only for those who can afford it. Go figure--health is a privilege. High speed Internet? Not in this country. Have you seen how fast the Asians surf the web? High speed railway system?? Nope.

Want to know why? Greed, and an oligarchical system that has stuffed the pockets of the nice government men to do what they say. Oh and gambling the country away in Wall Street through derivatives, also a bad idea. There is no production in there--hence, no wealth for the nation.

Steve Jobs, you will be sorely missed. (See, I'm a capitalist too)

What a wonderful world it will be with "glass"

Did you notice the wealth of this family? From the house to the kitchen to the car, this is not your middle class family. With the children dressed in uniforms of private schools. This is ostentatious wealth displayed with "g-class".

95% of American households must think this is another world, not the double wide, mortgaged to the hilt household with less than $20,000 in retirement savings.

Wealth is created through education, innovation and hardwork, not through handouts.

current wealth is a product of fiat currency, created by greed, deception, and violent force. your randian myth is an idealistic illusion.

Corning needs to realize that dimming windows and glass displays are both useful attractive. However, "touch" is on its way out. The future of interaction is voice. We have known this since beforethe original Star Trek. See the new iphone 4s, for example.

I have a love / hate relationship with this company.

It and I go wayyyy back - like 50+ years - innovative and exploitative...
