Beached Whale Lands In Yorkshire Countryside, Half A Mile Inland (VIDEO)

Beached Whale Yorkshire

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 10/05/11 03:00 PM ET Updated: 12/05/11 05:12 AM ET

A dead whale found half a mile inland isn't part of the typical scenery you'd expect to find in the midst of England's picturesque countryside.

But that's just what mysteriously washed up 800 yards from shore on the banks of the Humber estuary at Skeffling, East Yorkshire last week, reports The Telegraph.

So how exactly did it get there?

Planet Under Attack put together a YouTube video of the incident, speculating, "This reminds me right off the bat of a cow abduction ... it certainly has all of the trademarks."

But, according to experts, there's no link to aliens. Nor did the whale fall out of the sky, as a headline reads from The Epoch Times. Instead, experts believe it was merely a whale in search of food, reports Yahoo News. Kirsten Smith, North Seas manager at Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, said, “With the high tide the whale probably got carried up on to the salt marsh, got pushed back further in shore and then got stuck when the tide went out.”

With a high equinox tide carrying the 33-foot-long female Sei whale inland, it is thought she died from suffocation after turning over on its blowhole, experts said, according to the Daily Mail.

Andy Gibson, of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, said Sei whale strandings were very rare in the region. According to The Sun, experts say there have been only three sightings of the species in the past 20 years.

Rare sei whale species are normally found in deeper waters off the Atlantic Ocean, not shallow coastlines, notes the BBC.

Robin Fetch, from the Sea Watch Foundation, told the BBC: "It's not unusual to find whales here. We've always had whales following the herring down the coast, usually during late summer when they come to feed."

Another recent whale stranding seems to have had a happier ending. A whale stranded off the Florida Keys was saved and is now entering a rehabilitation center for treatment.

excuse me if i am wrong, but, having spent most of my life near the ocean, I would be very surprised to find out that a high tide could have done this. the article's suggestion that it was a tidal phenomenon is speculative to say the least. they don't mention any real information regarding the local tides. half a mile (800 meters) is one SERIOUS tide... it is not at all impossible for a tide to move that far in land. in fact, in many places the tides do move that far inland. BUT. where the tidal range is that large, the water never really gets deeper than a few feet. HOW on EARTH does a 33 foot WHALE swim half a mile in such shallow water..? maybe a large fish, seal or a dolphin... but a whale..?!

I have no idea how this poor whale ended up so far from the ocean and I don't know anything about the tides in that part of the world, but have you ever heard about the tides in the Bay of Fundy?

A half dozen Bigfoots could a have easily carried the whale to where it was found. Does the UK have Bigfoots too?

This is just a guess, but I'd say it got pushed up onto the tidal marsh by a big tide. Tides in my neck of the world can run from 12-16m(yes thats metres) so its not unusual for dead whales to get pushed up on the shore way higher than the highwater mark would indicate.

Apparently the whale was trying to avoid running for the (R) nomination. It's last words were, 'What do I have to do to prove I don't want to run for the (R)z ... too many c(R)azies!'

This article could have used a little more backstory: how many feet above sea level did this whale come to rest, how high have the latest high tides been, is this area routinely flooded at high tide, etc. The assumption being that it had to have been in water when it got there.

Otherwise the only reasonable physical mechanism for this whale getting to where it was found would be a tornado (or waterspout) picked it up and deposited her there. Talk about bad luck...
03:26 PM on 10/06/2011
perhaps the lack of back-story is an indication that there is no reasonable explanation... what if the article gave us the high tide info etc. etc., and it then turns out that a whale couldn't have gotten there with the tide. (it sure must've been ONE HELL of a tide to wash a 33ft whale 800m from the shore into vegetative surroundings...) so OK. then we ask, well what about tornadoes? well, what if it turns out that there were no (recorded) tornadoes in the area at that time? (nobody really associates England with Tornadoes right..?) but despite the bad odds, maybe someone asked those questions anyway, and thats the reason there is no back-story. because perhaps there really is no back-story. at least not one that bears mention in a respectable and newsworthy article. either that, or someone really did pull a prank from "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy :-) They should have left a note saying: Don't Panic :~)
