Seikou Yamaoka Creates Incredible Paintings Using iPod Touch During Train Commute (VIDEO) (PHOTOS)

Seikou Yamaoka Ipod Touch

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 10/05/11 08:30 PM ET Updated: 12/05/11 05:12 AM ET

Using only his finger tips, Japanese artist Seikou Yamaoka creates complex and beautiful paintings with his iPod touch during a train commute over several hours. By building up strokes of color on his 3.5-inch screen, he produces an array of compelling portraits.

With his goal to create water color-like art that doesn't closely resemble digital art, he uses ArtStudio, a simple Apple iPod touch art application. But Yamaoka doesn't shy away from the canvas. His facebook page and YouTube channel reveals that he paints actual water color portraits, too.

See the artist's breathtaking iPod creations below.

While I will always prefer the experience of viewing a painting in the traditional manner, I must give props where they are due. This fusion of art and technology is extraordinary and is another example of how Steve Jobs changed our world on every imaginable level.

Gives finger painting a whole new meaning!

From a recent interview with Daniel Richter, a major contemporary artist in Germany:
"Dann wären ja die besten Porträtmaler die Russen vor dem Centre Pompidou in Paris, die so malen, dass die vor ihnen sitzenden Menschen anschließend wie ihr eigenes Passfoto aussehen."
("Then indeed the best portrait painters would be the Russians in front of the Pompidou Centre in Paris, in that the paintings of the people sitting in front of them would look like their own passport photos.")

Science and art are so cool.

"incredible" seems a bit hyperbolic. Maybe mediocre would be more appropriate.

Correct. The novelty of the medium makes the technical accomplishment noteworthy, perhaps, but there's nothing aesthetically impressive about these portraits.

I'm sure SJ would want you to thank Seikou for showing you what can be aspired to.

author obviously means to say "portraits", not "paintings". don't let their poor word choice distract you from the fact that this is really creative and beautiful work using a new medium to its fullest potential.

i hope somehow the artist will profit from his talent. nice work.

Why? There are only so many hours in the school year; no point wasting them on mediocrity. If you want to teach your students to be better artists, show them great art.

Yes, you're right of course...taking 5 minutes out of class to show them what might be possible with a piece of equipment they are much more native than you or I using is a complete waste of time...I mean what would I know...I've only spent the last 20 years of my life as an educator.

I like the little imperfections (Eye bigger than the other, Too large of a jaw) that you can find in these works. Makes it believable that the scale and medium are hard to work with.

Fantastic work!

Moreover, today it reminds me of the impact that Steve Jobs has made on the world. The inspiration and talent belong to the artist; the medium, creativity that allowed it's development, and savvy to see it brought to the masses in a simple way belongs to the late Steve Jobs.
