Halloween In Montana: A MapQuest Guide

From zombie parades and costume contests to haunted houses and hayrides (to haunted anything!), the Halloween season casts its spell and awakens our inner ghouls and goblins. As part of FrightQuest -- a MapQuest series on spooky destinations and activities -- here are three options to celebrate Halloween in Montana that are sure to be a scream.
— Joan Bahr

Field Of Screams

Field of Screams, which has doubled in size since 2010, can be found -- for those who dare -- just south of the western Montana town of Victor, near Missoula in the Bitterroot Valley. Scary clowns, chainsaw killers and other fearsome characters roam the haunted field of corn stalks, tunnels and buildings. The admission fee is $8 for kids 12 and younger and $10 for adults. The Field of Screams opens at dusk and runs Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays in October.

Montana Corn Maze

The Montana Corn Maze, which kicks off in September and is open Fridays and Saturdays through the end of October, advertises fun for all ages, though it certainly caters to the younger crowd. Located in Manhattan, the 2.5-acre maze has plenty of trail to explore as participants search for prizes. Take a hayride from the parking lot to the maze, and on the way, see historic farm buildings and miniature animals. For less entertainment, and more of a scare, those 13 and older can wander the maze as goblins and ghouls run rampant during the weekend of Halloween. Friendly farmhands will hand out candy for the young, and fearful, earlier in the evening. Admission is free for children under five, $4 for those age five to 12 and $5 for those age 13 and older.

Historic Hauntings

Montana Fun Adventures drives visitors through downtown Billings for Halloween ghost tours. Researcher Karen Stevens, author of Haunted Montana, joins the tour operator to tell tales of the "dark side of Billings' past." Historic Haunting tours, held only in October, run about an hour and a half and typically end at a local establishment "known" to be haunted. The tours, geared toward visitors 12 and older, are available for $20 with a reservation and depart from the Haunted Dude Rancher Lodge.
